That's a good question, I've experienced both ways.. This ScanSnap specifies that it can detect data points to label files with and you can customize.
A big hp scanner/printer software would let me name the file before saving, I want to say it was this hp but I'm really not sure.
Good question to ask before buying though! I wish I could give you more guidance in how to know it has that feature but I'm not sure.
