The Hario mini mill has the best price/quality ratio and often on sale on Amazon about €25. The porlex is great too, all metal and the mini one can fit flush inside the aeropress plunger for transport but it is a good bit more expensive for the same results. Both Porlex and Hario are burr grinders and come in two sizes. Don't buy the off brand grinders on Amazon they are only good for grinding spices.

I've had great success with a cheap hand grinder if you're interested.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001804CLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_06AHMQ569WS5HE55BTR6
It won't be perfectly consistent like a +$100 manual grinder, but it gets the job done and opens you up to a ton more options in the coffee aisle.
If you're still not interested, then Gevalia was my go to back when i got preground coffee.
I have an Able Brewing filter, I really like it because it doesn't have the "crimped" edges that make other metal filters hard to screw in. Here it is on amazon for $12.50 USD
I learned about collapsible hot water heaters a couple months ago -- Amazon has a big selection. Here is one example (just picked one that appeared nice, don't own/recommend):
https://www.amazon.com/Secura-HF021E-Foldable-Electric-Collapsible/dp/B07L9T2P5N/
Something like that would work as long as you can get to an outlet?

I just use an analog thermometer that fits through the holes in my kettle’s lid or can clip on to the side of a cup. Like this.
I use a Stanley Classic One Hand Vacuum Mug, keeps coffee hot for hours. $20 on Amazon.

I'll reiterate the last comment, you can replace the rubber part without having to buy a whole new aeropress. I got this one:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08224W1JN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.com/humangear-Gotubb-3-Pack/dp/B00UKBJH58 fits perfectly. You could also put them inside the plunger, unless that place is saved for a grinder ofc.
Oh, I forgot something. I don't have a coffee mug. I found the plunger requires a surprising amount of force and I was afraid I was going to break my glass. I ended up awkwardly holding the ap with two hands to plunge it.
Would a stainless mug be a good call? I'd like something I could order quickly on amazon. I found this, but open to other suggestions.

That Brew App is an awesome app for Android users. Have been using it for a while now. Not only is it good for Aeropress, but it is good for any other type of coffee maker.
Second this. Using metal filter for a few years now. No difference really. This is the one I got from Canada Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Stainless-Steel-Coffee-Filter-AeroPress/dp/B0063SL2TQ/
Welcome to the rabbit hole. Personally I use this grinder, but in general burr grinders are the way to go, and grinders that are worth their stuff will always be fairly pricey especially if they're electric.
It all depends on how much you’re willing to spend. I’m pretty happy with my Hario Skerton Plus. It runs about $60 USD, and is probably the best value for a hand grinder under $100. If you’re willing to spend more than that, you might want to look into the Porlex Mini or the HandGround. Above that, there are some solid electric grinders like the Baratza Encore. If you’re looking for a very basic and affordable entry into burr grinders, the Hario Mini Slim is only about $35 on Amazon and will certainly get the job done for your needs.
My Technivorm Cup One makes a pretty great cup.
I'm not going to lie, though, I've been surprisingly impressed with how well the OXO (Idiot-proof) Pour-Over works, as well.
They don't replicate the Aeropress because neither steeps the same. But it's a pretty great cup for not a lot of work at all.
I purchased a Rhino Coffee Gear Milk Pitcher, 20 oz. It's super sturdy, and I never worry about it like I did with even the most sturdy glass. If you buy a different brand, make sure the Aeropress will fit, of course.

I went through the same … trying to figure out what fit inside the AP. Then I decided to just go for the grinder I really liked and finding a suitable case. Now I travel with both and love how all my stuff fits into a small electronics case from Amazon..
Just as a note, I don’t think $90 is needed for a scale. My $15 scale is perfect and gets used multiple times each day.
Love how the steam separates those colors out.
Reminds me of one of Jimi Hendrix's Album Arts
I recently did a week-long roadtrip and had great coffee in the car thanks to this 12V kettle that conveniently fits in my car’s cup holders. It takes around 13 mins to boil, and it has a keep-warm feature that can keep it as hot as you need for brewing. I loved it so much that I recently bought a 12V-to-AC adapter when future accommodations don’t offer a reliable way to boil water!
this is the kettle i have. without the lid attached, the base is just short enough to fit in the dopp. But the lid will fit in as well, just not attached to the base in travel.

I recently got this toiletry bag, and it fits the whole AeroPress including the base accessories. A disassembled Q2 also fits perfectly in the interior netted organizers, and I can even fit an air blower and 12V-to-AC adapter!
Just got this toiletry bag, and it fits the whole AeroPress including the base accessories. A disassembled Q2 also fits perfectly in the interior netted organizers
You want something that won't go rancid. Food grade mineral oil or butcher block oil.
For a budget option, I used this one. It's only $13.99 and is totally accurate to 1/10 of a gram. Held up great.
Unless you need something special got another reason, kitchen scales are really not all that different. Here’s one that has a 0.1 gram resolution that goes up to 5000 grams (11 pounds) which means it will be useful for weighing things other than coffee/AeroPress, too:
https://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Digital-Kitchen-Ounces-Cooking/dp/B0871TQ9NK/
I have a 0.1-gram resolution scale that only goes up to 500 grams, which makes it baaaaaarely high capacity enough for AeroPress.
I've been using this ENZOO grinder for 2 years. It seems great to me, but it's my first burr grinder, so I can't compare it to others. It's easy to clean, the grind seems consistent, and it's worked reliably. Less than $50 in the US. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086WB817N/
After reading the other replies, I'm wondering what I may be missing and not know it.
It is the same as THIS, which I picked up in March 2021 for £19.95.
It's perfect, I was stuck between cheaping out and getting a Hario or blowing the budget on a Timemore C2, this generic grinder really shows how much extra people pay for brand names.
Stick a dab of grease under the wooden knob for a buttery smooth feel.
Ya I bought the timemore scale. It has a timer built in so you don’t have to mess with your phone. It’s worth every penny too lol
Place the Q2 on the scale. Zero it out. Add 11g of beans (hoffman method). Place handle on grinder. Grind till it sound freely.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097Q569SJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Yes my scale is small but I enjoy it a lot! Works perfectly! I used to dip a spoon in water and stir the beans but have recently switched to spraying.
Definitely a kettle to the kit. We use it at every hotel because some actually charges your per day for an electric kettle.
We got really good mileage from this silicon collapsible kettle from Amazon.
No they were bought on Amazon. They hold exactly 13g of beans each for me, which is what I use for each AP brew. My additional beans, if I bring more than what fits into the containers (often I try to buy beans at my destination) I put in a ziplock on top of the gear and zip up the case.
My preference

More brewing possibilities too
I have the AeroPress Go Filter Holder and it is not very consistent in closing at all.
I use these 3 oz Tins for my daily use as well as traveling. They are the perfect circumference and one tin fits about 100 filters in total. I also use the tins to store pre-ground coffee when I travel and can’t take a grinder with me.
Right now, I am using a hard insulated lunch box to travel and it fits my AeroPress Go, a Portable Scale, and 2-3 of these tins comfortably. There’s also some room to stuff some 2 bags of whole bean coffee. The brand is Embark and I am pretty sure it’s a Target find.
Here’s my setup from a recent trip:
So I just put together a travel setup. Left to right:

I use this stainless steel mug I found on Amazon with my AeroPress Go. It has a sleek minimalist aesthetic design with the wire handle and keeps the coffee warm for a while.
Personally I like my Baratza Encore . The price has gone up a bit in the past few years, but every now and then you'll see a refurb go on sale for around $100. It continues to get pretty good reviews. Mine has been working well, with multiple uses per day for several years now.
A hand grinder gives me some pain. I ended hacking it by attaching a power drill to the top, but that's hardly scalable and was sure to break at some point.
I understand that $170 is not cheap, but for me a good grinder is key to making good coffee. And this also gives you the ability to try different styles.

I don’t travel too often, but when I do I don’t like relying on hotel coffee. Other instances I’m just not close to a coffee shop. Either way, over time input this together!

I think you'd have to go with Tungsten or Gold, maybe lead or mercury but those might be a bit controversial of a choice.
Check the price, are you sure this is important in your life? Go for it!!
I have thiscollapsible silicone kettle from Brentwood brand. It’s sturdy and boils fast
It would help to know what country you are in, but a regular cheap water glass, or a rocks glass (cocktail rocks/old fashion) would work great

If anyone’s looking for a cheaper alternative: I got this one from Amazon and I’m quite happy with it. Not sure why the brand ones are so expensive, to me the technology doesn’t seem that advanced.
I have been using this app for the past few date for making coffee via aeropress. It even allows you to make your own custom brewing method.
If you get a large enough mason jar, you make it one day and have instant cold brew for the next couple days. They also make metal filters that fit into mason jars to simplify everything and handles/lids that make it easier. I have this setup and it's great (and inexpensive): https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07VJJJ764/
$30 for the jar, handle/lid/seal, and filter. All washable and reusable. Very Aeropress-like when it comes to value and longevity. The handle/lid are SOLID. I was afraid a huge 64oz glass jar of liquid would break the handle but it doesn't budge.
It's really preferential, I personally drink Chinese tea all the time or make blends by black tea and herbs I have in my garden (mint, black currant, raspberry leaves).
From Chinese I strongly suggest Dahongpao, it is a variation of oolong, really delicious. In general, all oolong tea is great to try, but buy at least something from a mid-price range, there is a strong price-quality correlation in this case. Longjin is probably the most popular grean tea with melon notes, also must try
And you can always try black tea (any, I like Earl grey or with thyme) with lemon and a bit of honey (or sugar). It's perfect for winter
Oh. And it may be an offtopic, but I use this pot. Not exactly this model (I live in Russia, we have other brands here), but same design. The best part is that all the leaves become dry after I brew them, and with a French Press there will always be some water left in the chamber and it basically spoils the next brew
If you do make sure you get Pyrex 1003, the otgers are too thin and Id be worried of pressing on it. Also the 400ml is the perfect diamterer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LORGK7U/ref=cm\_sw\_r\_apan\_glt\_i\_HXGZ3MF5AX14M6GMJZ5H?\_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You do :) That means you can change variables (e.g. coffee amount or water amount) or try recommended recipes. Best $16 ever spent :) Here is mine … Have yet to change the battery after a year of use (often multiple times a day)
I used to use the o2 metal filter. This was actually a combination of two filters.
However, I have since switched to the cera metal filter.
This was a kickstarter, just like the o2 metal filter. The cera metal filter is arguably the finest holes ever for a metal filter according to some kickstarter coffee reviewer.
Since I had both, I have to agree. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anywhere else but Amazon Japan selling it:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B07MS9VF6F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use the "tamper method" - where you put 12g of coffee into an upright Aeropress, tamp the grounds, put a paper filter/metal mesh on top to diffuse the 45g water that you add. This prevents the grounds from being disturbed. Then you push down to get a really strong shot of coffee that I add cold milk to. I used this method to put a hush to my brother who was mocking the Aeropress with the minipresso saying the Aeropress had no crema. I won the taste test vs his 8g coffee in the minipresso.

I have since graduated to using the Joepresso, but I am still very fond of the "tamper method" (don't know the actual name).
I recommend going for the Timemore Chestnut C2 (Max if you can find one). Here's a review on it.
It's a good entry level manual grinder that's pretty consistent. I personally enjoy hand grinding my beans; it's like some form of meditation lmao.

Not the cheapest, but we've had really good luck with this one. Use it for pour-over, Aeropress, and the occasional morning instant oatmeal. Cosori Kettle
(Sorry this is so late but) The Humangear GoTubb is almost perfectly sized for this, and pops open quickly with a satisfying click. I use it to store aeropress filters for home and travel (although it probably holds too many for a typical trip). $US https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0095Q51O0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Cheers, of course! Just hit the "checkmark" button in the upper right corner or use the brown button above your keyboard when you have finished typing your roastery 😊
Here's a screenshot: https://snipboard.io/49e6RS.jpg
I'm asking Santa for this Aeropress rack. There are a few like it; it looks like it can store two collapsed APs and the drip tray would be helpful for freshly-rinsed plunger storage.
A good grinder is a big upgrade. The Timemore C2 is a pretty good entry level option. Also the C2 Max seems to be only $60 at the moment, that's a great deal.
Nespresso pods are very expensive for what you get. One pod is averages $0.75 and gives you around 40ml of espresso or a 110ml lungo.
The Hoffman recipe uses 11g of coffee and 200g of water. Ignoring that we get more coffee out of it, for that 11g to cost $0.75 the beans would need to be $65/kilo ($29/lbs).
Or put the other way, one single nespresso pod per day would be $270. With that, you could buy 27lbs (12.2kg)of these coffee beans, enough to make 1016 Hoffman-recipe Aeropresses.
The Aeropress Go will just fit the Hydroflask tumbler. I have the Hydroflask 12oz mug, which uses the same lid, and it will leak quite a bit if it falls over or is jostled.
Apparently the Aeropress fits the Zojirushi SM-YAE48 Travel Mug, which has the advantage of being leak proof.
It's possible to brew through the Aeropress funnel into a narrower vessel, e.g. a standard wide mouth Hydroflask. It 100% wasn't meant for that, but into a steel bottle it should be fine. The Hydroflask coffee lid (for the standard wide mouth) is one of only two lids that have been totally leak proof for me--the other is the Zojirushi one-touch lid.
Maybe add a small electric kettle. Found this example real quick but there are many others. The adjustable temp on this one is better than the on/off switch types even though you can't set an exact temp. I'm sure after a few uses he'd dial in where he likes it.

Recently, my filters have been shifting and coffee grounds get in my cup. I’ve used the same filters for over a year (link below), and the aeropress has been broken like that for years but I haven’t had issues with it previously. Only in the past month have I noticed several times that the filter doesn’t stay put. I usually wet the filter after I put it on the aeropress.
Any tips on what I could try to prevent this issue? Thanks!

Yeah if you want fairly ok coffee, a big ol' cafetiere is going to be great.
Late to the game here, and no expert by any means. After some research, I chose this one. Got it on sale for $48, and it feels well built. It has the stainless steel conical burr and bearings to make grinding as easy as possible. The size of the grounds seem consistent to me (again, no expert), possibly more so when set finer. I'm happy with it.

I love my Prismo (with a paper filter) and I love my double walled glasses. To make both of those things possible together...I use a 400ml heavy duty beeker like this: Version I have (not currently available) or Pyrex Version which is still available - look at reviews....lots of aeropress users.
The beeker serves many purposes from being microwavable to heat up and froth milk of choice, to using the ML markings on the side for diluted method and most importantly, being strong enough to press into before pouring into my double wall glass. Can't recommend it enough.
If you don't have a roaster near by try going to a grocery like Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Wegmans or Whole Foods. They will usually have a variety of whole bean coffees available in bulk and a grinder in the store that you can use to grind it fresh.
If you want to grind your own you can get a simple blade grinder for cheap that will give you reasonable results. It won't be as consistent as a high end grinder in terms of grind size, but will work well enough. Here is an example: https://smile.amazon.com/Mueller-Austria-HyperGrind-Precision-Electric/dp/B076FJ92M4/
Not metal…I have one of these and love it. Aeropress press fits well. Glass is heavy duty. Handles microwave if you want to warm milk first. And has measurements if you ever use dilution method

I want to recommend something that I don't usually see around the coffee threads, why don't you get a water boiler. I live in Hong Kong and we've always had one since I was young, It'll boil a big batch of water for you and keep it hot at the temperature you set it in for as long as you have water in it. I'm not sure if it's an Asian thing, but I hardly see it being recommended.
Can try one of these: (Amazon link) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X9FQZ7X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_7SZ42922BYWXY5MKR1FW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
These are used for carrying protein powder to the gym. It’s a little funnel that is sealable so you can carry around anything you want. They also sell ones that are just mini jars but I found the funnel to be pretty helpful.
The Dopp kit was a gift and I never thought I'd find it on the web but here it is. Marvelous tribute to RCAF! The pics don't do it justice and it is lined in orange. Very cool. I do with it was a tad larger but it works well. And it was a gift so it's meaningful to me.
The scale is this one - small and inexpensive.
I know AP says the scoop is like 14g(?) but I've measured it with my scale and it's more like 19 IME, so you might really be using more like 40g coffee instead of 30g.
If you have a nice grinder like the Encore you should def also get a scale, they're cheap, this is the one I have:
It is less pressure (that is, if you're using the mesh style ones in the OP. Something like the one included with the prismo might be different) and tastes pretty different from paper filtered now matter what you tweak. Whether or not the difference is a good thing is a matter of preference. It is possible to get a well extracted cup, but in my experience you're going to end up with a lot more body no matter what.
I bought JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder from recommendations on this sub. I love it. The adjustable grinder setting works great. I get two minutes of knee exercises each time I grind.
I highly advice you to play with recipes, you can use this app aeroprecipe: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.curtjrees.aeropressdice I'm not sure if it also exists on iOS. It gives you different grind/water ratios to test with same coffee bean. I also own a baratza, mine is the virtuoso, I usually take a range of 12 to 18 for the aeropress, 12/13 for fine, 14 / 16 medium and 17/18 for coarse. If you give it a try to the app let me know how it goes
I use the GSI Outdoors Bugaboo 14oz. Cup. It weighs in at 2 oz, has a low profile and fits the Aeropress perfectly
With the 1zpresso JX, this tupperware container is the perfect size to pour my freshly ground beans into for the day. The corners on it also make it perfect for pouring into the aeropress. Highly recommend! Used to be making a mess with zip locks!

Edit: also this grinder hits way above its price range. Would recommend! Even over the q2 which doesn't have nearly the same flavor profile (source YouTube coffee chronicler)
I use the Able Disk and I have used the Altura Disk in the past.
They’re both very similar. With both, I was able to keep my grind size the same as I did with paper filters and got pretty much the same resistance when pressing as I did with paper.
The Altura Disk seemed to get harder to press with time because it would clog more often with fines which doesn’t happen with the Able Disk. That said, I have never tried a mesh filter for the Aeropress, but I have tried mesh filters for other brewers like the Clever Dripper and V60, and in my experience, mesh seems to clog with fines the more you use it. If you have a cheaper grinder I expect you’ll run into this even more often. I use a Comandante C40 which has a very consistent grind and still experienced the clogging eventually after a few months of using mesh.
As for taste, I was hesitant for so long to switch to a metal filter on my Aeropress because I liked it perfectly fine with paper. But since switching to the Able disk I have really loved the flavor I get, enough that I’ve never felt the need to use paper filters again.
interesting... almost looks like Gabi Coffee Drip Master A...
Also I've also found almost similar technique from Ray Murakawa, incorporating melodrip and aeropress here
Ha.. ha.. and now I'm tempted to buy these tools...
Is that a cloth filter or paper from your pour over? For anyone who wants to cut paper filters, Ray Murakawa from MeloDrip recommended this 2.5" cutter, I've been using it alot rather than buying more Aeropress filters. Works great with store bought Melitta types.
I’ve used both. Def prefer grinding my own coffee. It allows me more flexibility to play and experiment. I bought a hand grinder off Amazon for around 35 bucks to get into this hobby and recently just bought the “Brew - OXO Conical Burr Coffee Grinder” because my wife complained about hand grinding 🤦♂️😂... but it also was on sale cyber Monday. I linked my two grinders below.
Rhino Coffee Gear Hand Coffee Grinder, Silver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M0NS8A4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_ChT1FbPGYJDCZ
OXO BREW Conical Burr Coffee Grinder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CSKGLMM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_YgT1FbAP5NQ49
If you're still out of luck, could buy some other cone shaped filters that are available locally, eg. Melitta, or buy some Hario V60, Chemex, etc online, then just cut your own.
I tried stainless steel filters for some time (maybe five months) and was generally unhappy with the results. I usually use the inverted method, and what I noticed is whenever I would flip the whole thing onto the cup coffee would immediately start flowing out. There was also noticeably less pressure when I would press down compared to a paper filter. (flipping was also somewhat messier. )
these were the filters: alternated between fine and ultrafine) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C94E17C
The coffee flavor always seemed thinner to me with the metal filters.
I have since switched back to paper filters (I generally reuse one all day long, rinsing between use.)
Like everything else in coffee, YMMV. We might just have very different tastes in coffee.
This is a bit off topic for this subreddit, but for larger quantities, I like using the Clever Dripper.
It's simple, easy to clean, and the immersion method is great.
I use the JavaPresse manual grinder. It's simple, it works great for camping, and it's affordable. Here's the Amazon link.
I ordered mine at Amazon from the store page and I received the same looking one with red lettering. I was beginning to get concerned I received a counterfeit version but I haven't found any evidence. The fact that it matches the travel size lettering has me less concerned.
We have the older style at work and it's clearly a true Aeropress. Only difference I can tell is that the newer style has slightly more play in the plunger but still plenty tight tolerances like the original - the feel of the plastic is very much the same though. Also the box it came in has the red lettering and grey look.
I use the Yeti sometimes, but I mostly use this "UDMG Reusable Double Wall Insulated White Ceramic Travel Coffee Cup

Its actually pretty BAD at being a travel cup, because the plastic lid doesn't seal very well so it drips a lot. But I like to use it with the Aeropress because it has a curved lip that makes it easy to pour out the coffee into smaller cups.
Good morning
I have tried your recipe. The result is good, slightly over-extracted but nothing unfriendly. I went for 70g water dilution. I might try it again with one click coarser grind. Otherwise like I said already the first part is a bit complicated to my taste, especially in the morning ;)
I have adapted your recipe as well as possible on the Brew Timer app for Android. If you are interested and want to adjust or modify it, I can share it. I called the recipe "Aeropress jiexiluan" :)
Also if you have an Android Phone I use Brew Timer app. I have uploaded in the community recipes the WAC19. You can easily change you water grams and it will automatically adjust coffee grams. And there is all the other famous recipes from WAC and others.
Yes and for that I recreated and adapted the recipe inside this Android app called Brew Timer I even shared the recipe in the app's community so you can use it.
The advantage of the app is that it will adapt the recipe based how much water you want to use. It's not best app but it works.
