I corrected my deficiency using 2000mcg of sublingual hydroxocobalamin per day. I had burning neuropathy and other neurological symptoms but my deficiency was caused by diet and using acid reducing medication. Folate should be between 20-24. Once you start taking B12 your folate and ferritin will drop. A ferritin of less than 30 is absolute iron deficiency even without anemia https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5589705/ Ideally ferritin should be 100-125. If you are concerned about an absorption issue you should take sublingual B12 and folate/folic acid. It bypasses the stomach and goes straight into your bloodstream. They also make sublingual iron and iron patches. Join the iron protocol facebook group to learn how to raise your ferritin. You should also take a good B complex because you need all the B vitamins. Potassium and magnesium are also important. In my experience, doctors were pretty useless. I saw a neurologist and he wanted to give me gabapentin when all I needed was B12 and thiamine. Ask about injections but I wouldn't wait too long. Untreated B12 deficiency can cause permanent damage. This book has a lot of great information on treating B12 deficiency: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1090400810/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_W55NBHXVTGCJY8HCCA5F?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
well I personally use this one because it is what has worked for me and I like the price point however I would strongly suggest using labdoor.com as they have reports for popular brands based on lab analysis. I use it everytime I need to buy a new vitamin and dont know where to start.
my first experience with sublingual b12 was through store bought b12 from a brand called “Natures Bounty” and it was absolutely horrific. idk what the fuck caused it but anytime I took it I would get incredibly itchy for days regardless of the dosage. in retrospect they might have been way higher dosage than they claimed to be bc sometimes when you take too much b12 it can cause a similar feeling however this traumatic experience made me incredibly picky with vitamin shopping
Are you eating a potassium rich diet? Coconut water is especially useful. That's the first thing I think when hearing of cramping.
..actually I was taking this one that has iodine, selenium and molybdenum. Seeking Health, not Thornes. But you most likely need just some potassium primarily.
It's similar in the US.
I can order hydroxocobalamin for injections from Germany, and including shipping to the US it's $22.37 US or about $1 US per shot - that's about the same price I have to pay for a prescription of it in the US, but I get it delivered to my house!
I have to order 2 packets of 10, but at that price it doesn't matter (I'm injecting about every 4 weeks).
Can you can order the following from the UK?
Via amazon.de: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B00A7ORMXW
Can I ask how much you supplement? I feel basically 100% back to normal but I notice I will get anxious if I go more than a few days without a 1.5mg cyanocobalamin injection. I take sublingual and oral doses of methyl/adenosin but they don't seem to be as helpful as the cyanocobalamin injection.
Unfortunately neither the docs or private surgery will give me more jabs for another 3 months (and then it's only 1), so I will need to source them myself. I've just ordered some of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09G6ZDCDP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 in the hope that they help. I just checked and its folic acid that I was prescribed to take, would you say that will help or should I look for methylfolate as well?
Absolutely. Here's what I used. TIAM Panthenol Moist Cream, 10%... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MPVG1R1?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
All my friends seemed to not care at all that I had painful acne (cystic acne I think it's called) because they and I could tell I was just feeling so much better and if that was a side effect...so be it. I definitely understand the business angle though. I cleared up pretty quick, basically have forgot that was a couple months of my life looking like a teen (30s M).
My hair is coming back, pumped about that! Using Costco version of Rogaine. It's almost fun putting it on cause it's clearly working (2 months in on that).
Thanks for the head’s up on the Caltrate. I’ll give the Citrical a try. I have stomach issues, which likely got me into this B12 deficiency predicament in the first place. I have had chronic gastritis most of my life and then taking acid reducers every day mist have messed with my vitamin absorption. I also recently discovered I am gluten intolerant and have been gluten free since Aug.All the various supplements I take now are tough on my stomach. I found this multi on Amazon—do you think it would be a good one? It says the iron is easier on the stomach than most and it has magnesium, folate, B12 (methylcobalamin)—all the things I need besides Vit. D and Calcium and Potassium (which I get from V-8 juice and OJ.)

And oh yeah, being a grandma is the best thing ever! I have two, ages 5 and 2–a girl and a boy. They are just so great. I bet you can hardly wait for the second one! Tonight on FT I was telling them that I had a stomach ache today and the 2 year old said, “when we are sick we lay on the couch and watch a movie. You should do that. “ ha ha
I was wondering what kind of B5 supplement you take. I have read that taking high doses of one B vitamin (in my case B12) can cause depletion if other B vitamins. I am looking at Amazon and it has this option of B5:
I'm in the US and bought hydroxocobalamine from germany via amazon:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B009M3TRQ4
About US $22 for 10 injections.
It took about 4 weeks to get her.
Someone else in the US reported they would not ship to them.
They did for me (anxiety and depression). B12 deficiency can cause a lot of psych issues - this book (https://www.amazon.com/Could-Be-B12-Epidemic-Misdiagnoses/dp/1884995691) gives a good summary.
Injections (the most effective way to get B12 into your body) are pretty easy to get. I'm sure other people will respond with self injection information, but if you want to try just getting one professionally just google "methylcobalamin injection [your city]" and there will almost certainly be some kind of wellness clinic/spa place with a prescriber on staff that'll give you one for $20-50. You'll know quickly if you respond.
I'm not a medical professional, but my understanding based on what I've read is that what counts as "deficient" is not universally agreed upon. For example, I believe there are parts of the world where anything under 400 is considered deficient. There can also be times where the blood test suggests a normal level but in fact the person is experiencing a deficiency that can be identified through additional testing. I found the book Could It Be B12? to be interesting and thought-provoking.
I have been taking one with 2000 mcg methyl, 1,200mcg Adeno and 800mcg hydroxy per 4 drops which helps but I really need to get some shots.
I got this one because it was more affordable per mg than most I seen. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084JHWPX4?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_MQV9JSW80QBBQ0Q2GHFJ
It really depends on your methylation genes which one would be best.
This is so frustrating! I'm absolutely not a medical expert but from what I've read, B12 is a relatively low-risk intervention. Left untreated, B12 deficiency can also potentially cause lasting damage. If you have a B12 deficiency, I hope you're able to address it even while continuing to investigate or rule out other issues.
If you want good company in frustration with doctors not knowing about or being willing to acknowledge the importance of B12, the book Could It Be B12? is a great resource as the author has based her career on this.
Just wanted to let you know they have pill cutters.
Mason Natural Vitamin B12 50 mcg with Calcium - Healthy Conversion of Food into Energy, Supports Nerve Function and Health, 100 Tablets https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008FCJZTC/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_01B2WPK2HSZ3D5ZAETEK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It brought my levels up from 240 to 450 in 3 months. Good luck!!
2 of the pink saline tubes in the little container they send u. Make sure you don’t shake it, let it sit to mix over night. Put tinfoil around it to keep it dark.
YES it is possible that this is B12 related. I would recommend the book Could It Be B12? If it were me, I would also be taking a sublingual supplement daily.
Last but not least, I want to scold your doctor. It makes no sense whatsoever that six months of B12 injections would "cure" you and now you don't need them anymore if they don't even know what the cause of your low B12 was. For example, it could be that you have pernicious anemia, a digestive issue that prevents you from absorbing B12, etc. Supplementation does not fix these underlying causes.
At the time I took 2000 mcg of hydroxocobalamin every morning as a sublingual tablet (this one) and I was really happy with the results. That weird pain in my fingertips when I pressed on surfaces hasn't come back since, thankfully.
To make a long story short, I am now splitting my dose between half hydroxocobalamin and half adenosylcobalamin, which seems to work best for me these days.
They have all been sublingual tablets (you let it dissolve under your tongue so that at least some of it bypasses your digestive system and goes directly into your bloodstream). In the past I tried Jarrow methyl B12, a great company but methyl made me agitated.
Since then I've used Seeking Health and Thorne, both fine in my experience, for hydroxocobalamin and Seeking Health for adenosylcobalamin. All of that said, many people do extremely well on methylcobalamin -- I'm not knocking it, just saying that different B12 forms genuinely work well for different people.
If you want to combine forms you can cut the tablets in half or buy pre-made combos (like this one or this one).
I don't exceed 2500 mcg of B12 per day total and I always take B vitamins in the morning to avoid possible interference with sleep.
I had about a week where things got worse but then it got better. I also read the “mind body prescription” which helped me stop catasphorizing too.
For German hydroxocobalamin, I used this:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B009M3TRQ4
I suggest you order now, as it takes about 4 week to get it, and another redditor in the US was unable to get them to ship it.
It only costs about $2 per injection, but it lasts twice as long as cyanocobalamin so (at least for me) is about the same price as getting prescription cyanocobalamin.
You will want to have someone you live with inject it or learn how to self inject - my SO does the injections for me, that is a big help.
Did you also get the "maybe you need anti-depresssants?" That depresses me as much as the sickness of B12 deficiency!
Thanks, I hadn't been able to find this for hydroxocobalamin.
Looks like they ship to the US, though the 100 piece (Stück) one has a different buying option.
The 10 piece one is 15.98 + 2.99 with shipping in euros, 1.90 euros per dose, 100 is 95.23 + 69.99 euros or 1.65 euros per dose. That is about twice my co-pay for cyanocobalamin ($1 US each).
Maybe I'll try it, as I haven't been able to get my doctor and pharmacist to prescribe hydroxocobalamin in the US - it seems hydroxocobalamin is only labeled for use to detoxify from cyanide poisoning in the US, so I'd have to get it as off-schedule or such. And then I think it costs more like $1.50 each.
With B12 its a big problem. Even before supplementing all the tests are either hard to get (HoloTC), Expensive (MMA+Homocystene) or not very good at showing active vs inactive B12 (Serum B12).
Its a personal opinion that have also read elsewhere. If you are deficient and start melting B12 under your tongue you should feel better/different and symptoms of Low B12 reduced. If you are adequate you won't feel much change.
Vitamin D testing does not have this problem. Doesn't matter if you take 1million IU the day before. It takes 1-2 weeks for injested D3 to make it detected by D-25OH blood test and that test shows you what your status is at that moment.
But with B12 the whole thing is a complete debacle. Otherwise books like ...
https://www.amazon.com/Could-Be-B12-Epidemic-Misdiagnoses/dp/1884995691
would not exist.
My CBC was normal the entire time I had B12,folate and iron deficiency. A ferritin of less than 30 is absolute iron deficiency even without the presence of anemia https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5589705/ You can try seeing hematologist. My hematologist was completely useless. They missed my B12 deficiency and thought a ferritin of 17 was great. I ended up emailing a doctor in the UK that specialized in B12 deficiency, Dr Joseph Chandy. He wrote a book which is super useful. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1090400810/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_1XEXSHA9X2QF51G3S56J
I’m in Canada and can buy this brand in the store, but this is the exact same on Amazon.

A deficiency that severe requires daily or every other day injections until symptoms resolve. It can take a long time to recover, everyone is different. It can take months to years. You need to be taking high doses of folic acid as well. Also iron if your ferritin is low. Potassium rich foods are essential because high dose B12 can deplete potassium. It's not uncommon to feel worse before you feel better. You should probably take a good B complex too. Get this book. It will help you learn more about how to treat your deficiency.
