Treasure Island is in old-fashioned English, but it was written for kids so it isn't heavy going. The whole book's online for free, here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/120/120-h/120-h.htm (It's a copy of an early edition with lots of funny old pictures)
Just read the real life history of the people featured in the show. The Republic of Pirates is as gripping as any fictional narrative. Additionally, the audiobook is fantastic.

I think it's likely the same book no matter which published version you read. Because it was written so long ago, the original is now in the public domain and you can read it here.
I remember these two from a piracy history course I took years ago: "The Many-Headed Hydra" by Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker and "Captain Kidd and the War against the Pirates" by Robert C. Ritchie. If I remember some others I'll let you know.

This is more fluffy, but it has pretty pictures: https://www.amazon.com/Real-Pirates-Untold-Whydah-Pirate/dp/1426202628/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=whydah+book&qid=1625648042&sprefix=whydah&sr=8-3
I was thinking that maybe it was styled after Treasure Island doing the same thing, but it turns out that Treasure Island's chapters have titles.
I suppose it's just a stylistic choice.
>I'm curious to know more about the cultural practices and technology adopted by pirates and their ships at the time - anyone got any recommendations?
I too had this exact question after reading some literature concerning the era.
This is what you're looking for: The Sea Rover's Practice: Pirate Tactics and Techniques, 1630-1730 by Benerson Little https://www.amazon.com/Sea-Rovers-Practice-Techniques-1630-1730/dp/1574889117
I don't think Starz has any plans to remaster into 4K. I would assume we would see Spartacus before Black Sails or a hint of it coming to their online streaming platform before any physical release.
In terms of quality though, grab the Blu-ray release and let your tv upscale. Bluray vs streamed/torrented quality has been a huge step up in quality and honestly looks very crisp at 4k still.
Bonus: Grab the steel book set because it's a bloody beautifully presented pair of cases for a show that got very little in the way of any merchandise.
Well I went looking for it online and I stumbled on the show!!! I'm sorry I had the title wrong. It's called under the Black flag. https://www.amazon.com/Under-Black-Flag-Romance-Reality/dp/081297722X
Done and done.
It's worth mentioning though that IMDB heavily weight certain votes. A vote from an IMDB staffer is worth like 1000 regular votes. Your vote will count a lot more if you actually regularly review things on IMDB than if you just sign up to vote for one thing.
Rating it on Amazon also helps a lot, especially since a lot of people have give it 1 star because of technical problems with the streaming service and not because they think the show is bad.
