That's Hurricane Larry and is headed pretty straight north up from Bermuda. Not going to affect anything inland but just to be safe FEMA has recommended stocking up on Melatonin bath essentials.
I love that effect too. There’s an actual scientific reason for the calming silence from a snowstorm. Snow (especially light fluffy snow) naturally acts as a sound absorber and dampener.
I don't have a fancy meteorology answer for you, but Windy is an awesome tool for visualizing this - you can see data from both live radar and also simulated data from the various models. You can see pressure, wind, rain/snow etc from the various models (American/GFS, European/ECMWF etc).

When the temperatures start getting above freezing we get a little bit of melt every day, which then re-freezes on top of many of the sidewalks every night.
To avoid slipping and injuring myself, I found these quite handy. Basically, snow chains for your boots that can be slipped on and off easily.
Not sure if I'm missing something? But I've been using the app for about a year and no complaints. The widgets are nice for my S5 and the weather is quite accurate.
