They're pacific sardines in a miso sauce from Nissui.

This is the most famous one, available in pretty much every asian grocery store. It's really great stuff, totally addictive.
If you want way more info than you ever thought you needed, including how to make it yourself, here's a post from Chinese Cooking Demystified.
I have zesty in quotation marks because I don't get any zest really from these. The tomato sauce is slightly thick, its not loose which I like. The sauce is fine, just nowhere near the zest/spice level of Portuguese "spicy" tomato varieties. They are good overall, just need a bit more seasoning in the tomato department for my liking.
I would rate the Nuri tomato and spicy tomato varieties on top, followed by the Santo Amaro's and these at third as far as my best-to-worst rank goes. These are the only brands I've had the tomato varieties of to date.

I've not seen the ones from Trader Joe's, but I do have Lao Gan Ma Chili Crisp Sauce which are easy to find, even our local Fry's / Krogers carries them.
All I did was add chunks of the tuna on top of the lettuce. Then I added a few green olives and some Chili Crisp, which is something else I learned about on this subreddit.
The olive oil in this tin is all I used as a dressing for the whole thing. It was super simple. I didn't even use salt and pepper, LOL.
Thanks for this! I just bought the Kindle edition of the book, The Magic of Tinned Fish. I can't wait to dive in. The author purposely left tuna out of the book due to over-fishing and a shrinking population.
Normally I am not a fan of the skin/boneless types but I really wanted to try this Spanish variety.
As expected the fries with eyes eat dry, kinda like mackerel, but the flavor was really good in my opinion. It has a nice warmth to it due to the chili pepper and flavoring. Something like this would go great with Spanish or Mexican-style rice.
They were really packed in there, it was a little bit of a challenge getting them out without wrecking them. Once you get the first piece out, the rest are much easier to get out whole.
I would recommend trying if you come across them.

Personally, yeah I would rank the King Oscar smoked kippers over the Bar Harbor. They used to be packed in Canada, now they are packed in Germany. I think the Canadian ones were slightly better than the German ones but both have/had a nice golden smoked flavor.
I know I have had the Crown Prince ones over the years but unfortunately its been too long since my last can of those to remember how they would rank. I've been meaning to pick up a couple to try them again. I don't remember anything bad about them anyways.
By very weird coincidence, I happened to eat a can of Rugenfisch smoked herring yesterday for lunch and I strongly suspect TJs is sourcing their herring from them. The similarity is certainly there, right down to the use of the word juice. The same unexpected skin was there. The ridges on the sides and bottom of the can are there. The square impressed into the lid is there.

Wow. I wanna try these now. Any tips on sources?

Are the extra virgin oil ones really worth it? Have you tried the cheaper "pure Olive oil" ones?
This stuff is great, it's sushi rice powder. You mix it in at the end and you have instant sushi rice. Taku from outdoor chef's life on YouTube recommended it. (fishing and cooking vids, check it out)
https://www.amazon.com/Tamanoi-Sushinoko-Rice-Mix-2-64-Ounce/dp/B003U32VI8
Also as a side note, look into haiga rice. It's half white rice half brown.... The bran of the rice grain is taken off, but the germ is still in place so it has more nutrients. Tastes like white rice.
Are the mediterranean style really mushy? If you click this link does it say you purchased this item at the top of the page? https://www.amazon.com/King-Oscar-Sardines-Virgin-3-75-Ounce/dp/B000KOUKK6/
These are the ones I bought according to my Order History: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0025UK92C There's a lot of 1-star reviews saying similar things as I experienced. There 1-star reviews for all different flavors on this page. Buying options show a variety of sellers on this page, none of which are King Oscar itself. I'm really curious if they taste the same ordered directly from King Oscar's website.
I bought a bunch of expensive tins ($11 plus) a while ago and have one of them each month. I eat my normal ($3 or so) tins every day. I'm currently up to 87 entries for all the tinned fish I've tried. I keep track of it all because I just can't remember all that so it helps to take notes of whether or not I liked something. I have similar records for hotdogs, energy drinks, and hot sauce but none of them are as extensive as the tinned fish one.
The app I use is called my collections. It's available on everything (IOS, Android, and PC) but I use it on Android. As far as I understand you can't really share your collections besides just screen shotting each page but it is all backed up online.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.altova.mycollections
The app allows you to make your own custom fields so you can be as detailed as you want.
I can't vouch for the book OP posted, but very much can for this one. Often simple, yet extremely satisfying dishes that utilize tinned seafood in ways I'd never come up with on my own.
Actually torrented it first, which I do with a lot of cookbooks before deciding to buy them. After making one recipe from it, went ahead and bought it immediately.
Aged balsamic vinegar goes great with cheese (and ice cream, oddly). Quite pricey but a small bottle will last for years if used sparingly - a couple of drops on a bite of cheese is enough. Have bought this one a couple of times before but it's just an example, you can go cheaper or a lot more expensive https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030MV7IO
Also try marinating your own olives - a regular jar of olives, drained and rinsed, marinated back in the jar in oil, vinegar and fresh herbs for a few hours. It'll taste better than anything you can get pre-made unless really fresh.
I've never seen a different size, but the tins I've gotten have been the 3.17oz version. They're an unusual tin size -- as narrow as most supermarket tins in the USA, but three times the height.

I also found that searching for "soup and side bowls" yielded some neat results 😊
I would suggest something glass with a sealable lid like these from Rubbermaid.
If you use a plastic dish, it might start to absorb fish odors, which is fine as lone as you keep one dish dedicated to fish.
Maybe something like this would help.

If you like these might I recommend Angelo Parodi: Angelo Parodi Portuguese Sardines in Pure Olive Oil | 10 Pack | Imported From Italy | Wild Caught and Hand Selected | Premium All Natural | Gourmet Fish in 4.23 oz Can (120 Gram) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0842BT29W/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_HHC8YPPZ3N08M6GPJS4D
Slightly cheaper by the ounce than Matiz, but I think they have a little bit more flavor to them. Both are great though!
Man Amazon has to work in their product photos. Yours look so good and the Amazon one is kinda gross.

My fav
Seriously you guys, Amerimutts get 10 cans of angelo parodi for $37.5
in the uk I can't even find them anywhere, except here for 36 pounds for 2 cans
Is this some kind of fucking joke? Portugal is right there, in Europe. Why the fuck can Americans buy our Sardines so cheap?

BAN ALL SARDINE EXPORTS TO MUTTLAND FFS. THIS MUST END!
These 'Deens are also available on Amazon, but they are very expensive there. https://www.amazon.com/Mouettes-dArvor-Sardines-Butter-Guerande/dp/B07YNYGF5M/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=Les+Mouettes+d%27Arvor&qid=1643658772&sr=8-9
I use it with ramen. Specifically Nissan ramen seafood or curry flavored. Just did it an hour ago :)
I am lucky we have multiple Asian grocers in my area and this one is very reasonable. Amazon also sometimes has good prices. This one (I have had this brand too and it is tasty) is $3.33 a can if you have US Amazon prime: https://www.amazon.com/Tong-Yeng-Roasted-100g-Pack/dp/B007AM1JMO/
I have done the ramen thing too and I also like it! The sauce flavors the broth well. I also put canned mackerel in ramen.
I just tried the Porthos brand and I really liked it. They're available at my local Fresh Market, and likely also at other premium grocers like Earth Fare or Whole Foods. Here's an Amazon link

Schmaltz? One of my passions. The best is when you render your own and get the cracklings or gribenes, left behind. This is a good book. The Book of Schmaltz: Love Song to a Forgotten Fat https://www.amazon.com/dp/0316254088/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JFDTEXRVS46875R3FNNT
I'm a sauce freak and love to contrast flavors and textures. That Bullwhip sauce is on my wish list, for sure, along with Espaliner. I'm currently gaga over Braswell's Tangy Lemon Caper Sauce - incredibly bold and very tangy. One of the very best bottled sauces I've ever had. I got 2 bottles for $15 on Amazon.
Tonnino Tuna with Jalapeño in Olive Oil is really good, and has delicious oil. Next time I get them I think I might make a salad using the oil with some lemon juice as a vinaigrette.
Here ya go, ya ol' fuddy duddy. Now you can put the kibosh on all that balderdash! 🍻🥫🐟
Season Sardines in Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 4.375 Ounce (Pack of 12). Pack of 12 so you're in trouble if you don't like, but these are good to have on hand. And for less than $3 a can you'll be ok in the end either way I guess.
All the Güeyu Mar product I've had were clearly worth it to me, and didn't leave me questioning the value. Especially their tuna collar and belly. Prohibitively expensive, but decadent.
If you want fried garlic without oil, check out Maesri Fried Garlic. For fried garlic slices, try Fresh Gourmet Crispy Garlic. I use both and they are fantastic!
Obnoxiously long web address but this the stuff, it is really delicious!

I recommend trying Tiger Sauce. I've not yet gotten to try it on DEENZ, but it's a sauce I've used most of my life on a lot of different meats. Very nice.

Like I said, they are both high quality and tasty. I like spicy stuff so I was surprised that I actually preferred the plain tomato's flavor more.
Now that I think about it, I think I liked the plain Nuri's more than the spicy variety as well :)
If your a fan of the tomato variety in general, these guys are high quality at a much cheaper price than the Nuri's.
I just picked up these Santo Amaro's with Piri Piri pepper and they are awesome. Slightly warm but by no means hot. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for 'dines with a pepper element.
I haven't had Latvian sardines but the smoked sprats coming from the Baltics are really good. It's been a while but I think these are the ones I decided were best locally available to me:
https://www.amazon.com/Latvian-Smoked-Riga-Sprats-Pack/dp/B00DJGEDLY
Are these the same?
I tried them and they were good.
Just read your other post! They are not the same.
