I think it is good when people discuss all forms of injustice. Jesus always stood on the side of truth no matter what.
I was reading some Saint John of the Cross earlier tonight, and hit this quote:
>The humble are those who hide in their own nothingness and know how to abandon themselves to God.
That Saint always floors me. I mean, that quote leaves no room for any selfish acts against anyone or anything.
Hey I recognize your name from r/Christianity. Does Secular Buddhist mean that you follow Buddhist philosophy or psychology, but are not actually Buddhist? I read a great book by Thomas Merton years ago that was a comparison of Zen and Christian Mysticism called Zen and the Birds of Appetite. It was my first introduction to Thomas Merton.
It looks like the Haydock link is also linking to the Scott Hahn OT books, but I just tracked it down. Oh I bet that's a beauty to have! It looks like the Haydock commentary is online as well. Great resource. Thank you!
I believe the plan is for the Word on Fire project to do the full OT eventually. That would be quite the investment as it will probably be a lot of volumes. So far it has been a great project. When covid shut down the churches my grandma was pretty lost. I sent her the first volume just to give some beauty and it was well received!
Thanks. I have the NT Ignatius Catholic Study Bible and it's spoiled me for all other study Bibles. LOL. I want that same ease of use, in-depth notes, etc. that that one provides, only for the OT. I also have the Word on Fire Bible, but again -- it doesn't cover the OT, yet. I'm hoping Bishop Barron does the OT -- that would be phenomenal.
I also have the Catholic Scripture Study Bible - and while the print is large enough and it's a good translation - the notes leave something to be desired. The NT notes are good, but the OT notes are more of a historical nature than a reasoning/explanation of the verses.
I've had the Great Adventure Bible and it was good. It's just not as comprehensive as I wish.
(I may have a problem with collecting Bibles - LOL). I have Haydock's Bible -- I don't know if you're familiar with that but it's quite good. It's the 1859 translation so the language is old school but the notes are good and are on the pages as the verses. However, I think it weighs 5 lbs? (I'm sure I'm exaggerating, but it's a solid brick of a bible, so it's not one I want to lug around.)
I think what I'm going to have to do is start collecting the OT books with commentary by Scott Hahn.
Thanks for your help. You and Cowboy have been great helps. I'm either really, really picky (which might be the case) or I'm just really, really picky. LOL
I don’t own either of these, but they look pretty cool and now I’m thinking about getting one too 😂
This one hits every criteria you’re looking for, but it’s not cheap: Catholic Scripture Study Bible: RSV-CE Large Print Edition
This one is half the cost, but based on the reviews has average-sized print: The Catholic Study Bible 3rd Edition
Nice post/comment.
I made my 4 year old daughter a rosary and put a medal on it with Saint Joseph on one side and a guardian angel on the other. Seemed like a great fit for my kiddo.
There's this book by Father Calloway on Saint Joseph that I've been meaning to pick up. Seems like the used copies are a good deal right now so I probably should hop on that.
The Bible I own is a NIV that was gifted to me 8 years ago. I was traveling to Alaska to work on a fishing boat for the summer and my traveling companion was a devout Christian from New Orleans I’d met in Seattle.
We landed in Ketchikan, Alaska on a Sunday morning and went to a Church of Christ. The sermon was on 1 Corinthians 13, which I had randomly opened to the night before on one of the ferry boat’s Bibles.
I had been opening myself to theism, and Christianity, after having considered myself an ardent atheist for 7 years prior to that. After the sermon, when the pastor asked if anyone wanted to be baptized, I felt compelled to stand up and was (re-)baptized later that day.
I didn’t find a fishing job until a week later, and before I left for it, an elderly congregant gifted me the Bible that had belonged to her late husband, who had been a local fisherman himself.
It didn’t take long for me to revert back to sin (though Captain was a good person, he was a bad influence) and I was nominally Christian until little less than a year ago when I started to pursue it fervently. I did however read this Bible cover to cover over the course of 3 months in 2016 (my friends though I was weird lol).
I do also now like using the online versions of the Revised Standard Version 2nd Catholic Edition (RSV-2CE) and the Douay-Rheims Bible to compare translations and for the Deuterocanonical books not found in the NIV.
I want to buy this Bible that contains side by side the Douay-Rheims English and Clementine Vulgate Latin.
