Basic 4 player games are and will always be (as far as I know, I’m not on the colonist.io official team) free. Then there’s three tiers for which you can pay 10, 50 and 100 US Dollars. You can read more about what you get with them here.

I personally got the $10 pack for the fun map, 5-6 player map and the free expansion when they’ll be launched.

you should play colonist cause its the coolest game in town :)
