Decentralization is the hallmark of the future of privacy.

Ideally, we'd like to see decentralized social networks such as diaspora take off. Also, the development of personal clouds, with tools such as Nextcloud should help individuals take possession of their data.

There are big hurdles to this, however:

• the tools still require a lot more expertise to install and setup. It can be quite inexpensive to maintain: $300 for a small server at home can take care of all your family needs.
• there is no business incentive to promote this movement. Hence, it will have to happen by word of mouth.
• finally, as an experienced experimenter in this way of doing: just like most crimes are committed by a close relative of the victims, privacy breaches are more often the result of someone close than a corporation or a government. Because trust requirements still need to be very high, I would expect plenty of ugly stories to come together with this reappropriation of their personal data by end users.
