Seriously, wife keeps mocking me because I'm so infatuated with the thing, but goddamn it has instantly improved my quality of life. Also, fuck Am*zon, but what can you do.
I don't know how the interwebz put that together, but this just showed up in my ads: https://smile.amazon.com/Innovative-Multi-Functional-Reel-Holder-Place/dp/B08MPJN4Y8/
Much like having a good menhaden oil and bloody bonito chunk slick when chumming for sharks, the key for chumming up carp is a hefty quantity of stale popcorn coated in a heavy layer of $5 movie theatre grade, artificial popcorn butter.
The trans-fats really help the popcorn stay buoyant and linger in the strike zone while that oil slick of artificial flavorings and saturated goodness really helps draw them in and activate their predatory instincts. After a few minutes you will experience a frenzy of juicy carp lips eagerly blubbing at the waters surface.
(Still ashamed of myself for not yet having tried my popcorn butter as a floatant on my corn kernel flies I use on delayed harvest streams.)
Like most great ideas this was inspired by an ideal mixture of boredom and alcohol.
Hanging out one summer day on Lanier tied off to my friends boat we saw a bunch of these huge carp swimming around and started chucking some popcorn their way to see if they would eat it, as one does.
After about 10 minutes we had probably 10-15, 10+lb golden boys going crazy on it, like big shiny piranhas.
We then had the bright idea to cut off the streamer on the 8wt we were throwing at schoolie stripes and spots earlier that morning and tie a #2 circle hook with a piece of popcorn stuck on and it got smoked immediately.
We managed to repeat this 4-5 times and had an absolute blast with it.
P.S. I just ordered some of these and I am definitely going to tie up a whole different kind of "popcorn fly" I will of course post pictures.
I bought these so no one can see me gill a trout at the supermarket or on the river.
I prefer these tricolor “Bobber Doggin Chubbys” for presenting a drag free drift of a variety of nymph patterns. Plus they cast well on spinning gear if you like to fly fish with mono like a true tenkaraeuronympho.
