I've been using Tea Tree oil for YEARS and also wouldn't recommend dumping the actual oil directly on to your skin, I've done that and it sucked. I did use small dabs on a cotton ball and to spread it around, which was better.
Now I'm doing that with manuka oil instead and it seems to be way more effective than tee tree oil...it also doesn't smell as strong.
That said, I'd start small with the soap though. This is the one I got, but I'm sure you can find other products.
Hi! Just read this and it’s giving me hope. Do you think something like this would work? It’s 10% but https://www.amazon.com/Benzoyl-Peroxide-Acne-Treatment-Wash/dp/B00PO7GKLM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=2L6W35GLNCBI2&keywords=benzoyl+peroxide+shower&qid=1668988732&sprefix=benzoyl+peroxide+showe%2Caps%2C237&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2l...
this is Acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN). It’s a skin disorder involving inflammation to the hair follicle and has caused severe scarring I’m assuming you left it untreated for some time which is very unfortunate for whatever reason but it’s gotten very severe. I agree with using benzoyl peroxide immediately as your first action, I’d recommend panoxyl 10% wash ( https://www.amazon.com/PanOxyl-Foaming-Peroxide-Strength-Antimicrobial/dp/B081KL2QYJ ) use this once daily until you notice a difference and then lessen application to a couple times a week, this product saved my life! My scalp folliculitis is practically gone. and I would also recommend that you seek a derm as the scarring needs to be controlled immediately. Possible solutions are:
Medical treatment
For mild cases of AKN, oral or topical antibiotics and steroid injections can improve symptoms by minimising secondary infections and decreasing inflammation (1). These courses are typically lengthy and recurrence after the course of therapy is common. Reported side effects of steroids include skin thinning, white translucent plaques, visible blood vessels, and changes to the color of the skin.
I am in the UK if you are US it will be hibiclens on Amazon I believe
BP helps to control it but not a cure by any means. You need to apply any BP cleanser or wash product and leave it on at least 3 minutes. I go much longer, up to 30 minutes. I also use some BP products that can be left on like and BP spot treatment gel or a Neutrogena leave-on BP product. The best wash/cleanser I've found is this OXY cleanser. I found it much better than any Neutrogena or other brand cleansers and I've pretty much tried them all.

I found this while searching..
https://www.amazon.com/Benzoyl-Peroxide-Acne-Treatment-Wash/dp/B00PO7GKLM/r
not sure if it will be effective but willt try
I started using https://www.amazon.com/PanOxyl-Acne-Foaming-Benzoyl-Peroxide/dp/B00BD1BXJM last night, along with 10,000 IU of vitamin D and my itching has subsided quite a bit. I think it’s so subjective from person to person what works. I was diagnosed some time ago with really low D, so I really need to supplement. If you do nothing else, mild soap and cold water rinse whenever you start getting itchy. The itchy is a sign of something manifesting. Apple cider vinegar with warm water helps too. Folliculitis does not like an acidic environment, which is what the apple cider vinegar provides. Look at the Dr. Ace post of mine yesterday for a few more specifics. Good luck.
Benzoyl peroxide, the active ingredient, a good antibacterial agent.
You can get it here: https://www.amazon.com/PanOxyl-Foaming-Peroxide-Strength-Antimicrobial/dp/B081KL2QYJ
Brand is not important, as long as it contains 10% BP and is a foam wash, otherwise it is hard to apply.
This is subject to change better vs. worse day to day week to week, might as well see the derm. There is a whitehead that still never went away. Try benzyl peroxide 10% until you see the derm for now:
If it goes away with BP, you are in luck. But sometimes this condition becomes chronic and permanent.
This is most likely too deep/severe for a basic topical alone. Needs antibiotics and if that fails potentially accutane. See a derm asap. In the meantime, you can apply 10% BP:
It does look like acne/folliculitis.
In order of escalation, if the previous step doesn’t work:
1) Personal hygiene
2) Benzyl peroxide 10%
3) Dermatologist – antibiotic course
4) Dermatologist – short course of accutane
5) Dermatologist – long course of low dose accutane
This doesn’t look very severe and you may do well with just steps 1-2.
Looks like the start of scalp folliculitis. This is how it starts, and if it’s happening for 1+ years usually it tends to become chronic over many years or decades.
The longer you have it, the higher the risk that it will get worse over time. This is how it started for me and many others. Just a couple of bumps 15 years ago. Then it spreads to 10 bumps or more. Then crusts form over it, and eventually it can affect your hair over a prolonged period of time.
Since you have very few spots and it looks like it’s more superficial (at the beginning stages), try benzyl peroxide 10% wash:
https://www.amazon.com/PanOxyl-Foaming-Peroxide-Strength-Antimicrobial/dp/B081KL2QYJ
However, for the sake of transparency, just be aware that you may be dealing with this for a very long time and that there is realistic possibility that it could worsen.
Today though you can start small. BP is cheap and see if it helps. If not, you will need to go to a derm and then you will be going down the antibiotics rabbit hole like many of us. If that doesn’t work either (common), there are things like low-dose, long-term accutane and other alternatives. But for now, stick with BP. I am not too concerned because there are just a couple of superficial bumps. But the fact that you’ve had this for 1 year+ now is a risk factor that it will could become worse and chronic, potentially permanently. Scalp foliculitis is not common; but what is unusual is for it to go from situational to persistently chronic.
The nuetrogena BP has been discontinued. I’ve never used the nuetrogena one, so I can’t say how it compares but I have used this PanOxyl one….it’s alright. I prefer this oxy advanced care
See a dermatologist, I’ve used this from Amazon. SEBEX Shampoo RUGB 4OZ by Sebulex https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004LU274M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Z57BN46JA6R2CC5DRGZP Also my dermatologist believes in Tgel.
BTW this is the Microscope I bought if you are interested, https://www.amazon.com/Microscope-Magnification-Inspection-Compatible-Smartphone/dp/B07PVMRZQH/ref=sr_1_8?crid=1L3F23QAOIETM&keywords=microscope&qid=1653153669&sprefix=microscop%2Caps%2C166&sr=8-8
I bought so i could see whats going on in my head, because after i shaved my hair, five days later the pain started, and since I couldnt see whats going on I decided to buy me a micro so I could zoom in.
Im using this gel for the night: Cordes® BPO 3% Akne Gel. Bekämpft wirksam Pickel und Mitesser bei Akne. 100 g https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00DIVLD40/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GKZZ3XEQDVVWW2GRDTQZ
And this is my acne wash when showering:
Benzaknen Wash 5% Suspension https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00HAX07NA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_42KDGADMKQNT8P07MDKG
Im 98% free now through using this combination for 4 weeks now.
As for body lotion I try to use something richer and unscented to make up for all the exfoliation from the cloth and the salicylic acid wash This is the body lotion I use currently. I have dry skin but still get folliculitis break outs occasionally and even though it’s a thicker lotion, it doesn’t seem to aggravate or cause them
Eucerin Intensive Repair Body Lotion, Lotion for Very Dry Skin, 16.9 Fl Oz Pump Bottle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000XY9LT4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_44Q2CVWBQMC1MVCKH5V6
I’ve had success with exfoliating towels like these and switch them every month so bacteria doesn’t accumulate Boao 4 Pieces Exfoliating Washcloth Towel Beauty Skin Bath Wash Towel Bath Cloth Shower Washcloth for Body 35 Inches (Blue, Pink, Yellow, Green) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GKLNJMG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0R4PRC4GTQV1K9CGX6B9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
With the exfoliating towel I use neutrogena body clear body wash!
Neutrogena Body Clear Acne Body Wash with Glycerin & Salicylic Acid Acne Medicine for Acne-Prone Skin, Non-Comedogenic, 8.5 fl. oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UOLCXU0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8QER1NMY09VNRSCY4B42
Its some kind of creme but more fluid so it’s better to apply on the scalp. I’m using this one from a German brand: Cordes® BPO 5% Akne Gel. Bekämpft wirksam Pickel und Mitesser bei Akne. 100 g https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00DIVM5BU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VWNKMGE7E75BSDJZPD2X
So I’m about a week into the BP facial wash and I’d say this has been the fast at improvement out of anything I’ve used so far.
I was trying to use the face wash sparingly so every other day but I’m now using it once a day to keep my head clean and if I can then use it less to maintain I’ll slow it’s use to 3-4 days a week.
I’m using Dr Song 10% BP facial cleanser,
https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Song-Benzoyl-Peroxide-Treatment/dp/B07GJLMK14
Well, my evidence is anecdotal, but the probiotic I'm on is this one.
I picked it because it was basically the same as another Garden of Life one I found on a list of top probiotics. I couldn't find that one at all locally, but I found the Men's one and it is quite similar. It also has a good variety of strains, esp ones that are known to combat fungal and bacterial issues.
Looks like folliculitis. If it becomes chronic, and left untreated, it can destroy the hair and you can have patches of hair missing permanently. I would start in this order:
1) PanOxyl 10% benzyl peroxide wash
Try this for a month. If no improvement, step 2.
2) Dermatologist: doxycycline antibiotic
You will be put on it for a few months. It reduces the inflammation, which in turn will prevent damage to the hair. If it comes back after you go off of it (common), go to step 3. This option is not ideal permanently because you can develop antibiotic resistance.
3) Low-dose accutane
This tends to help most people and is usually very effective. It can remove all the bumps and prevent further damage to the hair. Requires routine bloodwork. Even on accutane once you get off of it, the bumps can sometimes come back immediately. If this happens, it’s going to be low-dose accutane for many years or even permanently. This is a stubborn condition.
This is pretty much the basic roadmap for anyone dealing with folliculitis. I’ve been dealing with this for 15 years and I wish I had somebody tell me this 15 years ago.
Is this the correct one?
Also, your using this instead of probiotics or are you still using a BP wash as well? If the latter, can you confirm the kind you are using? I shared a link in the previous post based on your original post but trying to verify the kind you use.
Thanks again. I’ve learned more at Reddit than dermatologist and concerned about taking doxycycline again.
Good morning -
I also have been dealing with this crap on my chest And hoping you can share a little more information. I already picked up Hibiclens. The dye free clear kind from Walgreens / CVS.
Is this the spot gel you are referring to Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Spot Treatment Gel with Maximum Strength 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Medication, Pimple Cream for Acne Prone Skin Care, 1 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NR1YVYU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8R9XE0RTQ1N4FBY33WYS
Also, can you please share the exact probiotics you were taking?
From my experience it's definitely best not to shave your head anymore until completely healed. No matter the temptation, leave the clippers alone. I had great results using Hibiscrub from Amazon. Apply a small amount in the shower, lather it on wet scalp and rinse after about a minute. ( Careful not to get any in your eyes though).
I dont think there’s anything special about this shampoo
This is the product that I am using as refered by other reddit users. its the one in the united states. i just got it at a local CVS
I’m desperate too. I get it, my only hesitation is that I want to be able to say 100% it worked but here’s what I’m using.
So far so good. Good luck!
here’s what I’m using:
but here’s what I’m using: SweatBlock Clinical Strength Antiperspirant Wipes- Treat Hyperhidrosis & Excessive Sweating - Up to 7 Days Protection Per Wipe - 10 count - Unisex, Unscented https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002PQ8BQM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_N088W3BBDY695HXDWNMQ
Similar to what some others have suggested here with bleach baths....
Sodium hypochlorite is less toxic than industrial bleach.
It's basically electrolyzed salt water (someone correct me if I've miscategorized)
You can buy the spray bottle/maker on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Hypochlorit-Household-Cleaners-Electrolyzed-Convenient/dp/B08MPRBXY8/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=electrolyzed+saltwater&qid=1636758739&sr=8-1

The final product smells like bleach and functions similarly. You can see some posts on it relative to the bleach baths in various subs. You can control the potency based on the amount of salt you add to the mixture.
Have you also tried 1:1 Apple cider vinegar + water?
That & MCT oil seem to be very popular in the threads.
Also, Neutragena Acne wash.
I feel for ya, bud. That looks uncomfortable.
These are ingrown hairs. different from folliculitis.
This product should help, or any product with the ingredients in this product: https://www.amazon.com/Coochy-Botanical-Blast-After-Protection/dp/B07BC61CLZ
Or anything with zinc. if you're in the UK, get some Sudocrem
Really happy to hear that you found your cure! I am currently using netruegena acne wash (has SA instead of BP) in the shower, leaving it for 2-4 minutes before I rinse it off. I think it's helping me a lot but I don't think it's fully clearing it. Could you list the products you used (mainly the spot gel & mask) Reading the comments above, it seems like some of the products are not available anymore? Is this the mask you used?
I use Cerave daily lotion.. oil-free, ceramides, and non comedogenic https://www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Moisturizing-Lotion-Hyaluronic-Fragrance/dp/B07RK4HST7/ref=sxts\_rp\_s1\_0?cv\_ct\_cx=cerave+lotion&dchild=1&keywords=cerave+lotion&pd\_rd\_i=B07RK4HST7&pd\_rd\_r=b9fa3501-7c35-4cf2-8d11-d3bac155ee64&a...
I think the gel may work better because it’s absorbed into the skin? I found one an Amazon made by acutane, arrives today. Thank you though! This is the one I ordered Acnecide, Daily Cleanser 235ml https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B089NYMNC3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_4TQJ7SH424XR6JKF1DNJ

It’s called Oxy Acne Medication Face Wash - Maximum Action with Maximum Strength 10% Benzoyl Peroxide (5 Fl Oz)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B118D6A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_74MMSE5NZR0PJV3ZRYN1
Definitely try Hibiclens to clean yourself in the shower (neck down). Let it stay for 10min then rinse with water. Before bed apply a benzoyl perodixe 10% leave-on mask.
Benzoyl Peroxide mask gel/cream. You can find 10% gel on eBay for cheap. Search for "Rugby Acne Medication Benzoyl Peroxide 10 % Gel 2.1oz". Amazon has a few like this one
Do that for at least 2 weeks everyday and you should see result.
Oh and if your underwear are white, use bleach. If not, you can spray them with this before washing. You can also soak them in hot water and vinegar 30min before washing. Lysol laundry additive is another option. If you sweat during the day, don't hesitate to change your underwear.
I got mine from Amazon Walmart and target. They got many kinds of Neutrogena. Make sure you get the ones Benzoyl Peroxide is 10%
Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Face Wash with 10 Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Medicine Daily Facial Cleanser to Reduce Size and Redness of Acne Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Face Wash Ounce, white, 5 Fl Oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S49XI6M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_6XYTBT6XQCTQW1GWMWDK
I mean, the photos you posted look really mild compared to my own experience so I'd hope you'd see more success than I did. Like, my entire stomach and lower back looked like they had a crazy infected rash going on.
I actually found the ketoconazole cream was more helpful for me than the wash for some reason? and for the wash, they directed me to put it on for 10 minutes BEFORE getting in the shower...which is what I've been doing with the panoxyl now as well.
I'm actually not familiar with hada labo skin plumping gel cream, so I unfortunately can't share any insights on that...but if you are looking for body washes that might help, personally I look for ones with tea tree oil, as they helped the bacterial component.
If you're looking for something more mild and less anti-bacterial, I've tried a zinc soap bar that chilled out the fungal-rash stuff on my stomach. But if you really want to play it safe, just get some baby safe soap...I personally use the orange vanilla shampoo + body wash by the honest company. It smells SO good.
Honestly, I have no idea what's going on at this point.
I just did a 12 week course of fluconazole and only used ketoconazole cream and shampoo and while it helped clear things up a little bit, it didn't really finish the job. The doc thought it might be yeast infection related. But the only thing that's helped me is clindamycin benzoyl peroxide, a prescription topical.
However, I did just pick up an OTC benzoyl peroxide wash from Amazon 3 days ago and it appears to have actually helped...but everyones skin is different.
Sorry friend. I developed folliculitis around 26 mainly on the sides of my thighs and butt. I always just dealt with it until I got a prescription for clindamycin-benzoyl peroxide (topical), that kept breakouts at bay...but if you don't let it dry, will bleach the shit out of everything you own...which is why I mainly buy white boxers + bed sheets now.
That said, I tried washing my sheets often, changing soaps, detergents, dryer sheets, stopped wearing jeans, food changes, elimination diet, etc...to no avail.
I eventually went on accutane at 32 and after a 6 month course, it finally went away (in month 5)...but came back 2-3 months after I went off...with vengeance. It's now spread to my stomach, lower + mid back, sides, and chest.
The only thing I've been able to find that makes any difference for me is the clindamycin-benzoyl peroxide...I recently an OTC 10% soap on amazon that's made a hell of a difference...
but it truly feels like I'm just treating symptoms, rather than solving the problem. Hoping to figure this out soon, but I'd recommend that soap, and if you can see a derm, get the clindamycin-benzoyl peroxide topical.
Try this product: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EV1D79A/ref=cm_sw_r_oth_api_glt_fabc_C6RN6ZJMPX3JV2F00W6M
I’ve been using it for my face folliculitis and I’ve seen improvement in just 3 days :). Also if you read the reviews carefully you’ll find a girl with same issue that got cured using that
If you’d like the skip the doctor for now, what works for me is using these 2 products in the shower every day (no skipping!):
T/Sal shampoo. Put it in, scrub around for 1-1.5 min, then wash it off. Just like a regular shampoo but maybe for a little longer. Here in amazon: Neutrogena T/Sal Shampoo, 4.5 Ounces https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VQ3IJDU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_4NGMX1G2RN920JRJNTPV
The important step. After regular t/Sal shampoo, also use PanOxyl 10% benzoyl peroxide acne foaming wash as another shampoo. Use it like shampoo, scrub it all around your scalp, let jt be on your scalp for at least 5 min in the shower. Just use the extra time to soap up your body, the rest of your normal shower routine while the BP scrub sits on your head for 5+ min. Then wash it off just like it was shampoo. Here on amazon: PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash Benzoyl Peroxide 10% Maximum Strength Antimicrobial, 5.5 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081KL2QYJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_4T4489NC63X76WE5MCDK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
This is the simplest routine, requiring no doctor. It will take 2 weeks for maximum results, don’t skip any days.
You should see a dermatologist also... but if you don’t want to do that right now then do above.
well i didnt play games with this cuz i wanted to keep my hair so i jumped on the most potent avail. 3 months and completely gone. 65 bucks for 30 days of capsules but cheaper than doctors and meds any day=) I got this brand off amazon but I AM NOT making 1 cent off this share- just looking out because i know how terrible it is... https://www.amazon.com/Serra-Enzyme-Maximum-Strength-Capsules/dp/B00ISKXW9K/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=250+serrapeptase&qid=1612869095&sr=8-3-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFHMUtUOTUwOEtaRUQmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA1MDU5MzczVldUMlRXMzlJOVFXJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA4MDU4NzkzTlNaWjVJUFA2NURBJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
Just like other poster said, except use this, it's stronger and will work faster/better if bacterial. Use Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Face Wash with 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Medicine, Daily Facial Cleanser that you can get here - Amazon.com: Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Face Wash with 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Medicine, Daily Facial Cleanser to Reduce Size and Redness of Acne, Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Face Wash, 5 Fl Oz: Beauty
Apply it nightly and leave on over night. Yes, I know it says cleanser, apply it and leave it on anyway. You should see improvement overnight and major improvement in a week and hopefully be cleared up after several weeks if it is bacterial. If not, it's fungal. Also keep in mind that the cause could be fungal and that if you let it go on long enough you have a secondary bacterial infection that this product would help, but it would not clear it at all. So then you would know that the root cause is fungal. From my search for answers and own case it seems that the majority of the time it is bacterial. This stuff worked for me and I use it once a week or so to keep the problem at bay and have been as long as two weeks without significant relapse. I'm not a medical professional of any sort, this is just my understanding of the issue from my own personal research and not medical advice and all that. Good luck!
No itching whatsoever. that has also gone.

Btw after the Neutrogena I also used Oxy10 :
https://www.amazon.com/Medication-Maximum-Strength-Benzoyl-Peroxide/dp/B0166NTN2U
Basically the same (10% benzoylperoxide), seems to do the trick just as well. I use this now twice a week just to be sure it stays gone (paranoid lol)
I just have to say - of all the non stop googling I've done trying to figure out wtf is happening to my face (& im a nurse!!!), this is the most pin point exact issue I've been dealing with! 😭
Mine all started when I used this tool my friend raved about (it also had thousands of positive reviews on Amazon) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083XSTK7H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabt1_apgUFb5MMD6Z4
I've always plucked random chin hairs & other than that I just had peach fizz on my face, so I tried it, & my face (and now neck) have been absolutely ruined since!!! I could honestly write a small book on all the weird shit I've seen on my face since! I'm so overly thankful for having to wear a mask full time, as I don't think I would even be okay going to work like this, I look like a freaking meth head! The lesions/abscess are all over my chin, some around my mouth, & several on my neck and as crazy as this sounds- they all seem to be connected by this like, under the skin road map of ingrown hairs! I actually thought I had Morgellons at first, then for the longest time I really thought they were just ingrown hairs, one of the newest diagnosis I've found is called Hidradenitis suppurativa. Theres so much more I could say about this & what's been working/not working for me, I could even share pictures, but I've already written a book here. So please message me if you'd like to discuss!
Look into the link below.. I’ve tried everything and this hasn’t cured me but it’s definitely causing them to heal in a way I’ve never experienced. I’m hopeful.
I’ve tried everything (going on 4 years) and I kept this in my amazon cart for weeks because it was just another expensive serum. I kept going back to the reviews and finally caved one day when my skin was bad (it always is) My skin is exfoliating like crazy. The spots are scabbing like a normal wound for the first time in years. Best of luck to us all!
