Get this book and all their other ones, but this one first....these monks are amazing!!!
Agreed, our girl just got back from board and train. The trainer worked with her on calmness in the house. We utilize a training cot where we have her go. We try not to give her pets or attention while there which helps with her knowing this is a calm down space. Good luck!
Here is the cot we are using Training cot
Mine loves carrying things too. I got him large jolly balls. One is came with a rope through the center (rope was gone in minutes) Now he just grabs the ball and happily trots around. the other is a Jolly Teaser ball
Both have stood up to his ability to destroy and dismember pretty much everything.
Our pup (8mos) randomly throws up on car trips as well. We avoid feeding her before a long car trip to mitigate the risk of throwing up. She sits in the back row of the car. We’re hoping it’s a temporary thing - but yeah it’s quite annoying. Buy yourself one of those dog back seat covers that are water resistant to protect your seats. It also makes the back seat more comfortable for the dog. I linked the one we use. Fits every car except for american pickup trucks. https://www.amazon.de/OKMEE-Autositzbezug-wasserdicht-Aufbewahrungstasche-Rücksitz/dp/B0836LJ2ML/ref=asc_df_B0836LJ2ML/?tag=googshopde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=474000593436&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10616229382651167008&hvpone=&...
Hang in there!!
Btw highly recommend these they're a doggo multi vitamin. When I first got my boy he was on medication for his arthritis making him low energy and lethargic. He also had a lot of flakey dry skin. He's now off his medication, has tons of energy, he's going on long walks, and he doesn't have any dry skin. His health has done a 180 since we got him he was 8 when we got him now he's 12 and healthy.
I also give my shep fish oil daily and started on cosequin about 4 weeks ago after he went into the vet for a severe limp seemingly randomly during a walk. They recommended dasuquin which is supposed to be an updated formula, but I already had cosequin from previous fosters and they said the difference wasn’t huge. He was prescribed an anti-inflammatory as well to use as needed when the leg acts up.
Vet also said she uses this joint supplement for her pups, as another option: VETRISCIENCE Glycoflex Plus... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0746N2NBB?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
My last GSD/husky mix broke her wire crate. We didn't even bother with one for our current escape artist GSD/??? mix. We got him a giant IATA/airline crate and he reduced that to rubble pretty quickly.
We got him this one and it's lasted several years.
My GSD pup was doing the same. I found this suggestion on FB and it works great.
I am a foster who specializes in socially ackward German Shepherds. Clingers and Shy ones are my jam.
First, it’s going to be a long haul and not just one thing. First, the dog will need a good routine and confidence building (training is key to this). Second, you will need patience and understanding. Like when we try to adjust to new things or learn new things, it’s not linear. Just because he hates the crate now…. Doesn’t mean he will hate with you. And if he cries all night today… doesn’t mean he will do it tomorrow.
A book that I recommend a lot is this…. Great easy read!

As soon as you get him, get him in a training class. Talk to the trainer before class as to what your goals are. Then keep going to class to check in. It will do you both a world of good.
Good luck!

Best thing to carry with idiot owners around so much now. This is dog "mace" it's a nasal irritant. It's used in many doggy daycares to break up aggressive behavior. Doesnt injury the animal at all. Just screws with everyone's noses.
Ahhh, the puppy phase. Yes, few toys from that era survived, but the ones that did are always a treasure to pull out when I’m sleeping between night shifts. My dog loves stuffies, but Frenchie tends to find ways inside them (although not nearly as bad these days)—K9 Tuff Guard is a brand that I’ve found that makes long-lasting stuffies. This one is the “Jungle Dragon.”
since I'm a cheap ass I passed on the cots (though they do seem to make sense if doggo is eating beds)
I did have nearly complete success getting this mat
When our youngest was still a young pup she did eat the back of one. but then left the others alone. we currently have three that are survived.
Now that they are all (mostly) over the eating beds phase we started introducing softer beds again.
Do you have a brand called Kong? Its toys for big strong dogs, and they last a long time (years) and are much loved in my experience.

I have two and this is what I use!
Maybe you could try the Snuggle Puppy. Idk if it will help your dog, but it 100% helped my girl. For the first few weeks she had it, it became her new best friend, she brought it with her everywhere. I usually only had it turned on when I would leave and when she went to bed for the night. I picked up some extra hand warmers to put inside it.
After a week or week and a half I stopped using the heat packs, and after a month or so I stopped turning the heart beat on. She now loves her crate, and is great at home during the day. It seems a little pricey for a "dog toy", but I would buy it again 100 times over. Worth every penny.

I also got one of those Wyse cams for like 25 bucks and is set it up online of her crate when I left. The app has a microphone so you can talk to your pup. The first few times she was super confused, and it didn't seem like it was helping at all. But after doing it a few times, it seemed to work... She'd perk her ears up, tilt her head, I'd talk to her again, and she'd stop barking/howling/whining and lay back down. I think it took about a week or so.

Have you tried a dremel for dogs? It’s the only thing I can use on my GSD.
https://www.amazon.com/Dremel-7300-PT-4-8V-Nail-Grooming/dp/B003TU0XG4
And I find it’s more forgiving. It slowly the files the nail down so you can really see what you’re doing.
Clean water should be accessible 24 hours a day to your dog, and once she realises the water bowl is always there, and always has water, she will learn to drink at a calmer pace, failing this, you can get bowls to help your dog drink slower. Like this one.
As for your post, i'd personnally recommend having family meet all three of you in an outdoor setting, then having said family walk in your front door IN FRONT of your dog. To a dog this is pack hierarchy. I'm not an expert, but this is how i solved my gsd's behavorial issues, which were pretty much as you described in your post.
Not a vacuum, but this thing is a beast for upholstery (couch/car). $6
That's why we got these. He has them really bad on his right side from our hardwood. I also got elbow butter to help the sores he already has. They are actually made for humans but they work really well on dogs. I got the small and it fits perfectly.

I bought the Kong AirDog squeaky tennis balls. It was the only toy my guy couldn't destroy. Although he did tend to lose them every now and then. Amazon link
Oh, I typically recommend this book to new GSD owners. It's a good read and you can pick up some tips as well.
They have a few books but they are all very similar. We re-read these every time we get a new pup. Just as a refresher.
