Well, you said you were a fantasy and Austen reader, and I wanted to help! If you have not yet watched North and South, you should watch North and South. Get a Britbox trial. This shows off Gaskell really well and stars Thorin (aka Richard Armitage) from The Hobbit. The FMC is a minister's daughter who has moved from the south of England to the north, in a mill town. She's very focused on helping others. The MMC runs a cotton mill.
You could read L. M. Montgomery's Emily series - the FMC is more of a reader and introvert. And all of the Anne books, including Rilla's.
The other suggestions are for lighter fare. The above are more literary. Happy reading! Let us know.
Too Far to Whisper by Arianna Eastland - Lots of angst, heavy make-out sessions leading up to the big sex scene, and best of all, it's perma-free, so you have nothing to lose! Takes place in New England in the 1600s, which is pretty unique, too, which is why I liked it - a change of pace from the usual HR stuff.

Could it be Johanna Lindsey's THE HEIR?
I loved the Phryne Fisher mysteries. You can read the books by Kerry Greenwood or watch the Amazon Prime series based on them. Unfortunately, the made-for-TV series only ran for three seasons.
Phyrne Fisher takes place in Melbourne, Australia in the 1920s. The FMC is an unmarried, free-spirited, wealthy socialite-turned-sleuth. A slow-burn relationship develops between her and the local detective inspector.
It's a delightful series.
That’s nothing. A while back I was looking for Lisa Kleypas’ first published book, published in 1987 I think, and it’s out of print so very hard to find. Here’s the price on Amazon.
Hi! I am a new author that just published my first novel, Knightess. It is currently available on Amazon. It is a medieval romance about a woman hiding from her past and the husband she left on her wedding night. She's made a life for herself as a maid, keeping her head down and surviving, until knight-errant Sir Alec discovers her true identity. This brings about a chain of events that changes everything in Eleanor's life, forcing her to face her past. To come into her own, she will have to emerge even stronger than before. There are so many twists and turns, I'm afraid to give away too much. But check it out, and if you have any questions on tropes, etc., I'm happy to answer.
You might like this if you like:
strong heroines, men that hold their own, lots of plot twists, love triangles, relationships where the man and woman are equals...and better because of it, knights, castles, horses, drama!
Mimi Matthews’ stuff is all closed door!
The Work of Art is currently free (us Amazon link, unsure about elsewhere
I haven’t tried that one yet, but I enjoyed The Lost Letter (second chance, scarred recluse hero) and A Holiday by Gaslight (old money/new money, grumpy hero, cozy Christmas)
For short stories with clean romance, I recommend Satin Boots by Holly Bargo. The book is a collection of six stories.
Also, these books, though since the Romance is a sub-plot, it may not count. The amount of research I did into the time period, to the point of borrowing 19th century cookbooks, was nuts...

Her baseborn bridegroom by Alice Coldbreath - not sure if she's on KU, but if you want a great romance series, for me her books are 5 star reads.
I keep a wish list on Ammie and check it every day to pick up freebies. I also have a kindle budget - $1000 a year. I've done this for 12 years, and now just under 5000 books to re-read regularly.
Lady Saves the Duke by Annabelle Anders is one of top 5 favourites, because she's not beautiful - short and dumpy, and the H is oh so proper, and at first acts like a cad. But she really does save him.
The Truth about Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden is another in my top 5 favs, she too is short and dump and he's a very pompous duke. But he becomes besotted with her - hands. It's a lot of fun, some angst and very sweet. The series by this author is a regular re-read - great writing.
I've just finished a series that might suit your requestA Season for Treason by Golden Angel. This author has a couple of series with kink, and interesting stories. The link is her most recent, and I really liked that competent women who surprised the men with some of their skills. It was a fun series to read.
If you're looking for short reads that venture far from the sophisticated drawing rooms of English aristocracy to the rough and ready American Old West, then I'd like to direct you to Satin Boots by Holly Bargo*,* a collection of short, clean romances set in the American West of the mid-nineteenth century. You'll find cowboys, ranchers, outlaws, gunslingers, and more in this collection.
Another option if you enjoy westerns is Shot from the Hip: 12 Tales of the American Old West by Holly Bargo. These are short stories and most of them are either romances or have strong romantic subplots. The romances within the stories are gentle.
Sophie's Halloo by Patrician Wynn is a sweet Regency romance that I read decades ago and remember fondly. The heroine is pretty typical for the period, but the hero is a genuinely nice man. What a lovely and refreshing character!
Have you tried Lady Saves the Duke - Annabell Anders - this is 3rd book in a series, and it's in my top 10 HR books - (mind you I probably have 100 that interchange in my top 10).
My fav trope is when the heroine 'saves' the H, usually by loving him, and the h in this book is definitely a wallflower. But not weak, she's shy and stronger than it seems.
Also Elisa Braden's books are great - book 1 is The Madness of Viscount Atherbourne, my fav is Book 2 - another heroine who 'saves' the H.
I'll go first! My new WW2 romance, THE TOUCH OF LOVE, just released a month ago. It's a gripping, compelling, and inspiring novel that will rip your heart out, put it back in, and then leave you smiling.
It tells two intertwined love stories, in a dual time/alternating chapters format. One love story is trying to survive WW2 in Poland. The other is set in the US during modern day, as Katie is trying to track down her grandfather's mysterious past while trying to survive her own emotional battle.
Available in ebook, Kindle Unlimited, and paperback on Amazon. Already getting several 5 star reviews. Happy Reading! Click HERE to check it out.
Another H is Sebastien in The Dangerous Viscount. He is grumpy, not a dandy, badly dressed etc. He falls in love with her when he sees her pink stockings. He's also a Virgin, but she treats him badly, shames him. There's a brief time gap and he decides to take revenge on her. Loved this couple and it's a fun read with some nice steamy scenes.
It might be a bit light weight but I really liked Jessie Clever's The Duke and the Wallflower. Heroine is plain, and overhears the H's comments about her looks. But, he falls in love and it's very angst. The epilogue is one my favs...
Lord Love a Lady links to book 1 in the series. Book 3 is in my top ten HR books Lady Saves the Duke.
My fav trope is when the heroine saves the hero - so book 3 is a wonderful example. She's so not a heroine - at first.
I'd read the first couple pages of the "look inside" sample on Amazon to see if you can handle it. Heyer's got a large vocabulary but she's also a lot of fun to read.
I'm re-reading Sherry Thomas Lady Sherlock series. I am loving Book 3, The Hollow of Fear and I have books 4 & 5 lined up in my kindle,
My best 5 star read for 2022 - A Marquess in want of a wife by Louise Allen.
I was cautious as I like MOC, historical accuracy ad steam. Not always easy to find all three.
Their story is wonderfully revealed, great characters and a plot with depth and unexpected twists. Loved the the link to Waterloo, but there's also a sweet baby and a kind heroine. It's a great read..
I don't remember the first historical romance I ever read, but Philippa Gregory was definitely keeping my library card busy for awhile there lol
For those who enjoyed Outlander, I might suggest Never Now by Lindsay Dee. Different country but same vibes.
Aww, heh, I didn't link 'em earlier because we're trying really hard not to be annoying with the self promotion stuff. ;p
Here's the first book...Second book will probably be out late this year!
