I started with a kit that I found on Amazon sorta like this one:
36 Colors Needle Felting Wool Set Starter Kit Wool Felt Tools
I watched YouTube tutorials to learn how.
These are adorable 😍
I would get her a woolbuddy! Its a wool pad when she's felting. So much better than foam pads imo. You can grab them on Amazon Woolbuddy
Also, wysteria has the best wool I've used so far. Wysteria Wool
Tell her to keep up the good work! ❤

This kit was great! I found the instructions pretty clear me it was really fun to do... Except for the little black lines, those were a pain in the butt 😳
I used a kit I got from Amazon, the instructions were a very interesting translation, so I relied a lot on YouTube videos!
I get all of my stuff from Amazon. There are a ton of little multicolor packs containing about 20ish pieces of wool for under $15. Then I buy 1 or 2 standard colors in bulk that I use for the bases of my projects.
Edit: here's a link to the pen you were talking about: Clover Felting Needle Tool
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WV5ZCK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KB2Vyb3DDWVX3
It's not super necessary though so if you want to save yourself even more money I'd suggest just holding multiple needles of the same gauge (2 or 3 is plenty) as you felt.
I usually use actual pipe cleaners instead of craft ones. They grab the roving with a vengeance and are much sturdier. Counterpoint, they need more roving to cover up the sharp bristles. These are the ones I use
These needles are awesome. The 40 spiral makes quick work of smoothing, and they last. My wife has been using the same needles for two months. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K4PR9SZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have mine in tons of glass corked jars
Mainly because I have an aesthetic going on, I'm a spooky lady and have an apothecary for decor filled with fun fake spooky things.
So I just got more jars and filled them with my felt. I have them with all my needle felting stuff on a 3 tiered rolling metal cart from ikea. You can get mason jars and if you want the cork look, buy corks for mason jars online.
I previously used a tackle box/clear plastic container with dividers. Kinda like ones used to store beads. That actually worked quite well! The only thing is the compartments need to be adjustable in some way.
My first storage use was a shoe organizer that went on the back of a door. I would put the felt in bags then in the slots hanging from my door. That wasn't too bad either.
My last idea is this. I use these all over my house for organizing and they would work great for wool. Not exactly air tight but at least gives a little more protection. They sell a smaller size as well that are great.
Welcome! Needle felting techniques are actually quite compatible with crocheted amigurumi critters, especially for making facial features, so you’re in luck! If you want to take things slow, you could get your feet wet that way, using the crochet supplies you already have plus a needlefelting starter kit off amazon.
There’s a lot more options for various budgets if you just search “needlefelting starter kit”. All you really need is just the needles and some roving or batt wool, so you can go with a smaller kit! The one I linked just happens to be a pretty complete one that has almost everything you could want if you choose to eventually go into purely needlefelted work.
Note however that it doesn’t come with instructions; if you’re looking to find a project kit that has just the supplies and instructions to make one or a few cute critters, such kits are available on Amazon as well!
Once you have a basic kit and you decide you want to make your own projects from scratch, Etsy is a good place to look for additional supplies, especially if you need larger amounts of specific colors. Starter kits can come with a wide variety of colors, but each color usually comes in a small 5g roll that fits in the palm of your hand.
Lastly, while I’m not terribly familiar with them, there are lots of video tutorials and felt-along streams on YT and Twitch! Instagram’s #needlefelting tag has also been a great source of inspiration, as a lot of artists will post their progress, and it can give you an idea of what to expect while your work is in progress.
Best of luck, if you have any more questions feel free to ask! I’m really happy lots of people are getting into needlefelting these days, so I’m more than happy to help out.
Welcome (back) to needlefelting! Given that you’re already introduced to the basics and probably don’t need to follow a project pattern (unless you want to, of course!), I think just a standard Amazon kit with a variety of colors ought to do just fine! I’d say this 50-color kit seems to be pretty complete, but there are lots of options for many budgets and needs! Just search “needlefelting kit” on Amazon or Etsy.
Later on, once you’re comfortable, you can upgrade your tools individually and/or get large amounts of single colors/fiber types through Etsy, LivingFelt, etc.
Now, if you do actually want to follow a project pattern/need directions, you could try a Woolbuddy kit or any one of the other brands of project kits that can also be found in the same search! There are also lots of video tutorials on YT, Sarafina Fiber Arts, and felt-along live streams on Twitch and other platforms held by LivingFelt, myarmcanfly, etc. Unfortunately I’m not as familiar with these since I have done everything freehand for a long time, but there are many other regulars here who have more valuable insights on this front!
I got this kit to start out and it has worked great!! Comes with lots of needles in different sizes and tons of wool.
I got this kit to start out and it’s great!! Comes with tons of wool and needles in case you break any. Needle Felting Kit,Wool Roving 40 Colors Set,Needle Felting Starter Kit,Wool Felt Tools with Felting Tool Instruction Included for Felted Animal Needle Felting Supplies https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MR3M78G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_W18DTFZYBRN9AS8B19RV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I would start with something that has simple shapes first, like this starter kit Advice- be careful when stabbing - watch your fingers!!! 😄 Good luck, it’s really a lot of fun, and therapeutic!
I use these bags and then these boxes. The bags come in large or extra large. For me the gallon size is far too small for fiber but maybe they would suit for a skein of handspun wool. I definitely seal the bags. Leaving them open allows moths in and out. I think storage loose is pretty but insane.
Having moths is one of those things that maybe doesn't seem like a big deal until you have it, and then you're like, "If necessary I will burn my house down to get rid of these effers." Prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I was hoping you were going to say keyring! It’s hard to tell if they would be too bulky for the size of the rainbow from the picture but if you think they would work, I use these 100Pcs Keyring Key Chain Split Metal Key Rings with Link Chain and Open Jump Rings Bulk for Crafts DIY Jewelry Keyring Making 1"/25mm https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07WFT7FJM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_1NWF296596610NREP7VB I use a thicker need to make a hole and then thread the attaching loop through and then use jewellery pliers to attach the keyring
I use glue, actually! I paint a very small amount on my armatures and wrap the wool around it and from there can build the wool around it so much easier. I used to just try to needlefelt it but it's so tedious. This is the kind I've liked the most so far. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UV3ZL9G/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_W5WJJ9DRR4VB16GNRDZQ
Step by step books are a great way to learn - you could get one in a local bookstore or an arts and crafts section of a store. Alternatively you could purchase one online, here’s one I would recommend by Corina Hogan but any book will do: https://www.amazon.com/Easy-Follow-Guide-Needle-Felting-ebook/dp/B00TH85L82
I get all my Wool and other bits from her main site too. But
I used these! And just felted the wool into the little shapes and kept turning them over to felt both sides to make it even. I linked a video as an example. :)

Thank you!! I used these simple led lights from amazon, the blue ones of course. Now that i've done it here i literally just want to make all of my future felts light up now lol. It's pretty fun!
This kit - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08G1VV681
The picture on the front is the only one. I couldn't see how they'd done the face so used what Felts by Philippa uses for her sheep on her YouTube channel! I figured a sheep was close enough to a Llama!
Those types of stores don’t typically have much for needle felting I’ve found. I started with a kit like this: PP OPOUNT 60 Colors Wool Roving Needle Felting Starter Kit with Wool Felt Tools and Foam Mat for DIY Needle Felting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MT6BX66/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_4EQFQ4DHD202BEW8SXQ1 and then just started buying more wool roving (what you use to make things) as I got better and more picky. Some of my fav wool has come from a grab bag from a seller on Etsy who has her own sheep and dyes the wool herself. Good luck!
oh. i though you can check this one, <strong>https://www.amazon.com/FELTING</strong> MACHINE-PUNCH NEEDLE FELTING MACHINE-FELTING PEN MACHINE-ELECTRIC FELTING TOOL-FELTING TOOL HANDMADE/dp/B09MT27YN8
hope this can help you. dear
As the person above me said, these eyes don't work very well for needle felting especially for smaller projects such as this. The awl is good advice just make sure ur project is firm enough. You should look for eyes ,without the screw end, on Amazon. Try these maybe
YsesoAi 300-Piece 2/3/4mm Mixed Mini Black Glass Eyes Kits Assortment for Needle Felting Bears Dolls Decoys Sewing (100Pcs Per Size, 3 Size) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077NYTPNK/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_B41ABKXFHNHWZQ5PSRYX
This year was my seventh wedding anniversary and one of the traditional gifts is "wool" so I figured I would finally learn needle felting! I bought a cheap kit with various colors first and did a few small test things to make sure I understood but I didn't really finish any of them lol. So this is my first real completed piece.
I used this kit from Amazon and made a few minor design changes so that it was just a regular penguin instead of wearing a costume, and I added a heart done with a stencil. I'm pretty pleased with how it all turned out!
Definitely try a fine spiral needle like the other poster suggested. I'd also suggest getting a multi needle punch tool. This one by Clover is my go to for smoothing a piece on its final layer. There are generic version of this tool out there for cheaper but that one by Clover is better made and they sell replacement needles for it. Totally worth the price.
The pad I have is great and the wool doesn't stick to my felted pieces at all. I do have to clean wool bits off the pad occasionally though.
https://www.amazon.com/Artec360-Felting-Eco-Friendly-Natural-Off-White/dp/B07RFSQG1Z
I have the off white colored pad.
Surprisingly, Amazon! I purchased it back in October (after doing my first felting project and realizing foam wasn’t going to work for me). It definitely isn’t perfect for a couple reasons (neither of which are deal breakers for me):
1) depending on the color I’m working with I may need to pick away wool pieces that transfer onto the project. 2) colors stick to it so I may need to pick at the mat itself to remove colors after - however it’s easy to do.
What sold me on this one though is that it has a dark side and a light side to use while working on certain projects!

Thank you!! I'm so sorry for the delay, my notification setting was off on my profile for some reason. I got the pendant on Amazon, they're usually listed as "cameos", but here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y23TJQG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glc_fabc_S67PB1WAYY0SDK2VYKR7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 😊
My first (and only so far) purchase was this and I’m happy with it. I don’t have the eyes of a seasoned veteran when it comes to wool, as I’ve only made 5 small things so far, but this seemed to work just fine for me.
It's from an amazon felting kit. I got some too. This is the one I got and it came with them https://www.amazon.com/Needle-Felting-Kit-Included-Supplies/dp/B07MR3M78G/
They're honestly tiny little eye screws that I just screwed in. My husband's idea. I thought I would need to at least glue it but I felted hard enough and they had coarse enough threads that they work just fine with such light little flasks.
I use poly for my cores so maybe they're lighter than if they were 100% wool and that helps them not fall. Maybe it'll fall apart once it's put in and out of Christmas storage a few times though, but I hope not.
Here's what I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V34TDRZ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
These are the ones specifically that I used on her, but you can definitely do a search for mink eyelashes and come back with tons of results!
I used to buy this periodically but I recently switched to synthetic fiber fill from Michaels. It’s much cheaper and I’m not even halfway through my first bag!
Sorry to bother, I did wonder about some filler. Would this work? https://www.amazon.ca/Sheps-Natural-Wool-Spinning-Felting/dp/B01J740JZK/ref=sr_1_80?dchild=1&keywords=roving%2Bwool&qid=1606342160&sr=8-80&th=1
Thanks! I actually just got all my stuff at Hobby Lobby. I'm sure any larger craft store would have supplies you're looking for. The workers are always knowledgable in my experience. I bought a small pack of natural colors, and purchased more variety packs as I needed. It seems more economical to buy packs of wool. Since I didnt know if I would like it, I didnt buy more than just a little but bulk also seems like a good move. Amazon seems to have good starter kits.
Something like what's below seems to cover all the stuff I got in store, prolly for cheaper. I dont have experience with this particular kit however. Extra needles is always nice because I've already broken 3 😬 Heidifeathers Needle Felting Starter Kit - Handle, Finger Guards, German Glass Eyes and Instructions - Free Post https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K2YSUUG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3rERDbSYVS5XJ
I got this kit on Amazon and I have to say I really quite like it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S29GWTN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_E-QcEbJRQJXZJ
It has a decent amount of quality wool, and I was able to make a very large anatomical heart out of it, and I have tons of colored wool leftover, with a little of the white roving filler for two or three other smaller projects. It gives you both roving and batting, etc., explains the different kinds of wool, and the little carrying case works great for me for travel.
I also got this kit, for more of the tools (the last one comes with needles but not the handles, this has a single needle handle and an 8 needle handle (you can put more or less needles in it as needed) which is quite handy. Also nice to have a second set of the leather finger protectors: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075SVRPHK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_w7QcEbZ9JKF4X
I can recommend both. I'm still a beginner but these have both worked out well for me.
Its felt that is made for needle felting (the thing they do in the video). Here is a link to a starter set I found on amazon.
I cast a few pretty resin handles useing tabletop resin and crystal molds I got off Amazon. Here's a pic of one https://www.instagram.com/p/BmozBN1lnua/?igshid=1vhc3x8qyhgha
As far as favorite needles go I'm with you on spiral needles. I started out useing generic industrial needles then moved to star and finally spiral and spiral is now exclusively what I use. You just can't beat the deep penetration and even felting I get with a fine spiral needle.
If you want an easier to find tool for finishing order the green and yellow 5 needle 'punch' style tool from Clover. This one right here
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WV5ZCK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_BVWIFbKFSPJ1T
The needles in it are so fine you can use it to go over your work and it leaves a beautiful surface. You can also order refill needles for it and set those in a seperate handle for finishing work in tight places.
My suggestion would be to get one of these all inclusive kits:
They are not that much more expensive than a single project kit. You can look up projects on YouTube and it’ll go through the whole process, step by step.
Yeah! I only started 3 days ago and have made a little project each day! I started with (this little cat)[https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713Q2ZR9?ref=pd_basp_dp_primary ] . It’s only $10, and took me about 2 hours to fully complete. It comes with everything you need too! Have fun!
I use one of the tall drawer are storage bin racks. Mine has 8 drawers and is about waist high. You can easily sort my colors into the drawers. I got mine at Michaels but there are similar ones online.
This is what I use. You can find more options looking for "Core wool roving" on amazon. If you want to stick with strictly wool(which is what I suggest) this is the cheapest option. It is cleaned but unbleached or colored.
Hi there! You might be interested in purchasing wool dryer balls as a base, which are just white or black core wool balls that are already felted somewhat firmly! You can find them on Amazon or Etsy, but be sure to check the listing as they can vary in piece size, pack size, and price.
Example Amazon 6-pack! Fairly large, though.
Example Etsy decorated wool dryer balls
You can decorate these with your own colored wool, and voila, baubles! Or if you can wet felt the dyed wool to be more secure to the surface, they can continue to be used as reusable dryer balls!
A word of warning of course - wool dryer balls as bases are definitely pricier than styrofoam balls, after all, they are natural wool!
You can purchase premade sets of glass eyes like these through Amazon or Etsy, or purchase blank glass cabochons and print out irises to be adhered to the flat backs with mod podge! Paint/paint markers work as well, but should be sealed with mod podge or another sealant as well. For search terms, try "glass cabochons" or "dome glass eyes".
I'm working on a tutorial for using cabochon eyes without adhesive or wire, but the head sculpt for the demo is taking forever. ;_;
I bought a few kits and just dove in. This kit is cheap ($12.99) and a great first felting project to get you started! Comes with all the supplies and a book, and the needle is actually really nice, a lot nicer then ones I’ve gotten in other kits!
You can also find kits for small “starter” projects on Etsy but you can also buy a basic starting kit on amazon that’s got wool and needles and just go for it!
Etsy and amazon also have lots of cheap, easy beginner kits.
This was my first one!
If you look on Etsy and search “hamanaka felting Kit” they have a ton of super cute ones for just under $10 - $15
Also I’ve found felting kits at hobby stores like Michaels and Joanns, they’re a bit pricier then the ones I find online but if you use a store coupon (which you can almost always find a “50% off one item!” or similar type coupon) they’re a decent deal.
And I second the YouTube tutorials - they’re super helpful.
$4/oz is pretty cheap, and an oz goes a long way if you are smart about it.
First and foremost, you need to get core wool. This is undyed, unbleached wool roving you can usually get for around $12-15 dollars for 7-8oz. You make your core shapes out of that, when you are happy with your cores only then do you start layering on color.
Doing it this way saves you a TON of cash, and also allows you to be super smart by buying a bunch of starter packs for the tons of colors and extra needles, all of which you will need. I bought a 18 dollar starter kit and a bag of core roving when I started and made about 30-35 items before needing more colored wool.
Searching Amazon for "core roving" gives you many options, the above link is what I bought so I can attest to the quality and cleanliness of it.
If you get that core roving and use it to make cores than an assortment like the above can last for a very very long time. Especially if you choose what you are making based on the colors available.
Amazon should be able to cover most of your needs! As far as domed glass eyes go, you can either get blank glass cabochons and print out irises to be adhered to the flat backs with mod podge, or get premade sets.
Note that neither of the listings I linked have the irises set on wire. Wire isn’t totally necessary in my opinion, you can actually felt a socket for cabochons to pop into, or just glue them on. If need be, you can attach armature wire to the backs with hot glue, soldering, etc.
For the more beady eyes with the screw in the back, “plastic safety eyes” is what you want to be searching for!
Basically, you pinch two different colors of roving or top together, fibers parallel, and then comb the fibers until you’re satisfied with the blend. Photo from the official Clover site for reference.
That said, the claw is great for cleaning brush mats, but as far as wool color blending goes, you might be better served with mini wool carding combs like the pair that comes with this wool set from Amazon!
Honestly I buy the kits off amazon and I find that I have plenty of colored felt for dozens of projects. Are you also using the colored felt to make the cores? If so thats your issue.
Grab that and use it for your basic shapes, your cores, then you coat it with the colored roving.
Hi there! So first off before I link recommendations, I do want to mention that felting needles are generally quite brittle when pressure is put on the blade in any unusual way, and that even with high-quality needles you still need to take good care of them. Be sure that you are always poking and pulling the needle correctly, and never attempt to twist, apply sideways pressure, or change direction when the needle is in the wool.
As far as Amazon listings go, Desert Breeze Needles seem to be of the highest quality. German-made needles tend to be some of the best around, and unlike most Amazon listings Desert Breeze actually lists the gauges of their needles.
My personal go-to needle supplier is CupidFalls on Etsy, which carries a wide variety of individual needle types and sets, which can be purchased for very reasonable prices in small or bulk orders, and they are all color-coded at the top. These have definitely lasted much longer in my experience than the Michael’s, Clover, or cheap bulk Amazon needles I had when I started out.
Needle Felting Craft Kit Set Wool Felt Tools with Foam Mat + Wooden Felting Handle + 9 Needles + Scissors + Awl + Finger Stall + Glue Stick by Queenti https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WPBCD4V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_oJXYzb79S4X83
You can use polyfill and felt sheets. Make sure you don't get the felt sheets with the adhesive on it.
What you can do is use the felt sheets and polyfill to make a core shape that's inexpensive and easy to felt onto. You can felt the sheets just like normal felt, and it makes a good cheap base.
Also sometimes I make blank forms using wet felting, if I need to make something large. I take some large object, like an empty pill container, and wrap my core wool around it evenly. Then stick it into an old nylon I have and run it through the wash/dry cycle with my laundry. It'll wet felt the wool tightly to the container, and I can cut the container out of the wool and then stuff the empty space with polyfill. Works great if I have to make something fairly large and want a nice solid form.
If you have any questions, please ask!
i've found this polyfill works much better than any other polyfill i've tried! it felts down much like wool - you can build the core up and then felt over it. it also felts down faster than wool, i've found, AND you can felt it tightly. http://www.amazon.com/Crafters-Choice-Polyester-Fiberfill-20-Ounces/dp/B003JKOV3K
Wool buddies are great! They are on amazon too. The kits are great for beginners. :)
Thank you :) I bought the eyes from my local craft shop but these are exactly the same. I just mark out where I want the eyes with pins, poke the holes and put a little glue on the end of the eyes and they stay in just fine.
Made using this kit, though I made some adjustments to the design. Enjoy the pictures of my cat Boombox abusing the poor thing once it was finished.
Oh man, last year I felt the same way as you! Interested but didn't know where to start. So I went to Michaels for inspiration and happened upon this adorable kit, which was perfect because my sister has a hedgehog and Christmas was around the corner. I figured that instead of getting a bunch of wool, needles, and no direction, a little kit like that was the perfect thing to test my ability and see if it was something I wanted to continue doing.
I had a lot of fun, and it came out JUST like the picture! My sister loved it. And I don't believe what everyone on this sub always says- I didn't stab myself once! Common sense and patience. So yeah, I'd recommend a little kit like that (they have a few other animals too) so you aren't left with extra wool if you decide it's not for you.
