Apparently some people have success with cold frames. We might give that a go at some point. A lady local to here (Nikki Jabbour) wrote a book on it.
I had the first edition of The Well-Tended Perennial Garden and found it very useful. I'm not aware of vegetables needing pruning -- maybe thinning -- but then I haven't grown a lot of veggies. But Tracy DiSabato-Aust's book on pruning is on every garden writer's "best" list. Good luck!
