I like the Bernat Softee Chunky yarn! it’s very affordable ($4-6/roll), comes in a ton of colors, and you can find it at all the big name stores as well as Amazon. here’s a link to some!
Yes, was going to say the same thing. Whilst it may have worked with smaller sized projects, it's a lot harder to keep the even tension with these types of embroidery hoops. This type of hoop will hold the tension a lot better :-)
Yeah, of course! I definitely had some trial and error.
For the rug, I used this monk's cloth, which has been fine so far as long as you keep it really tight. Any section which isn't blue was from this yarn sampler set. The rest of the blues are just whatever the cheapest was at Michaels, I don't have the labels anymore unfortunately and wanted to try low cost for the first rug. I used an adjustable punch needle and kept it on a longer length for all the raised parts. After I finished punching I secured the back with a carpet adhesive, dried for a day or two, then cut the loops of the raised parts and shaved them to make them look how I wanted, which... mostly worked, lol.
For the coaster I used a monk's cloth from Michael's that I would not recommend haha. I used just a standard small embroidery hoop, but I would STRONGLY recommend you buy a nonslip hoop instead because I constantly had yo readjust mine when the fabric slipped. I actually used embroidery floss for the whole coaster and a much smaller punch needle that is meant (I think) for embroidery floss. It was just a cheap sampler pack of floss colors so nothing special. The needle for that punch is much much smaller and I found it had no problem at all sticking in the monks cloth but you obviously have to punch much closer than you would with yarn.
I got inspiration from a bear I found online! I looked up pop art bear and found one.
I used really silky, thin, yarn for most of it. Most of it is KxC yarn from Joanne’s.
I use both a 3mm and a 5mm. Here’s the link to the needles I use! I buy my cloth off Amazon. This Brand Is the one I’ve found that works for the 5mm punch needle.
My initial thought is no, but I have not properly tried it. The reason I say that is because embroidery floss is so small and monks cloth is made to hold slightly bigger fibers. But I haven’t tried it and maybe there are some brands of monks cloth that works well with floss. That being said, I recently finished a piece of punch needle embroidery with this cloth and it worked okay. It was my first time using floss so I would also welcome feedback if there is a better fabric to use.
I should mention, I tried to use a size 4 yarn ( I swear the label is lying and it is smaller than that) in this fabric and it did not work. The punch needle was using was too big.
Hi, I had the same problem. The cloth and tools coming together really makes a big difference. I read a lot of reviews on Amazon and then just took a leap of faith. I really love this monks cloth and recently got more. The link below for two smaller pieces with finished edges. They do sell it by the yard but the edges are unfinished. I just tape the edges with masking tape, but the link below will give you an idea if you like the cloth enough to even go through the trouble.

I bought a cheap needle kit (this one) and I was wondering which number I would use for 6 strand embroidery thread?
Thank you! For most of those, I was using a basic adjustable punch needle from Amazon (like this one Punch Needle Adjustable Embroidery Punch Needle Pen Tool for Stitching Applique Embellishment )
Yes you typically make it in a hoop, however I have had trouble with the fabric slipping, so I would recommend a non-slip hoop, or they make a special tape to wrap your hoop in so the fabric doesn't slip. Because you're punching into it, it puts force on the fabric, vs normal embroidery you don't really push down on the fabric, so there's not usually a problem with slipping. It'll be a lot of trial and error no matter what. I would recommend something like this instead here
very helpful indeed! I have never heard of Monks cloth. I think I saw little kits on Amazon. Is the fabric put in a 'hoop' like they use for embroidery? Would you recommend something like this? https://www.amazon.ca/Maydear-Starter-Beginner-Cartoon-Embroidery/dp/B08CDS222G?ref\_=ast\_sto\_dp&th=1&psc=1
Yes, I am in the US. it's a Lavor adjustable 5.55 needle from this kit
I have been using worsted and bulky yarn with it from my old knitting stash. Not sure what the thread count is for the monks cloth, I just know that the kind with the grid lines on it is the right kind, and the kind I have does not have grid lines on it so it's not the right thing.

The adjustable needle that came in the "17 piece punch needle kit" from WILLBOND on Amazon works great with size 4 and 5 yarn. Link here
Gotcha. If you can find a small gauge punch needle that might work. Or, like another user suggested, needle felting might work if you go slow and are careful with the needles so they don't break.
Something like this: Clover 8900 Felting Needle Tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WV5ZCK/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_RDGCZ456VN8V6Q8XV3W4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Hi! I bought these in an art supply store but they should be online eveeywhere. It’s called Canvas Stretcher Bar, and they come in different sizes. To connect them, you just need to push the corners together (like puzzle).
Here’s some I found on amazon you can check out Edmunds Stretcher Bars for Needle Arts Supplies, 1 Count (Pack of 1), Natural https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019ILOVG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_1VZQEKJMV0BQ13E2AQHF
These are reusable so if you want to make a horizontal longer rug, you can just buy additional 2 long ones and snap them together. I’m currently using all four in 28 inches (it’s square now) But if you want it like a long rug, you can buy 2 x 28 inches and 2 x 35 inches for example. Hope this helps
I got this Y-Axis punch needle cloth plus tracing pens from Amazon, because like you, there was nothing in my area. I have nothing but good to say about it. It is perfect for yarn punch needle. Not so much for thread punch needle, like an Ultrapunch. The weave is not tight enough for floss or thread, though you could muddle your way through using all six strands of floss, but i think there are better choices for that. I like Osnaburg fabric from hobby lobby for thread punching. The actual punch needle fabric hobby lobby sells prepackaged by the aida cloth i didn’t like at all. It’s very stiff and almost brittle. Lots of broken threads and a struggle to punch the needle through it. Anyhow, the pens included with the fabric work good too. They are the disappearing ink kind, for tracing your pattern out. I have no affliction with amazon, just a happy customer. https://www.amazon.com/Y-Axis-Needle-Embroidery-35-8In-Cotton/dp/B07W5SKF2J/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2FW9CDOR8B1PE&dchild=1&keywords=y+axis+punch+needle+embroidery+cloth&qid=1631906458&sr=8-3
Dang what a tricky situation! The biggest needle should work the best with the monks cloth linked here, which I regularly use with embroidery floss:
Y-Axis Punch Needle Embroidery Cloth 1 Yard (53.9 in. by 35.8In.) 100% Cotton, with 2 Fabric Marker Pens https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W5SKF2J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5HY62A21NKH30ZV2ZBK1
I got the linen I use second hand so I don’t have details about the weave but it isn’t a super fine weave since it’s slightly see through. I would get a few small samples (1/8 yard) from the fabric store to explore what might work.

I used these for mine, what's nice about them I think is that if it's a bigger piece you can just stick more on to the back. I mean I haven't tried to do that yet but that's how they're advertised lol.
That’s the link to the kit! It doesn’t come with detailed instructions though, so you may need another source for that.

Hi! I’m new here and excited to start my first project! I got a #8 Oxford needle, (Wool Queen 8# Fine Size Wooden Handle Punch Needle Rug Hooking Tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NSYXH6K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_-5nbGbGP3CVWX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 ) some yarn and 7 count monks cloth (https://www.joann.com/charles-craft-monk-s-cloth-afghan-fabric/prd12440.html ) I was going to start but read that I should maybe get 12 count monks cloth instead? What would be best here and what difference does it make? Thank you!’
I know amazon is hell... but if you're unsure you will like it/want to invest, this kit is great for that
i started out using regular elmers white glue, but it made the back feel crunchy and stiff. i switched to roberts 6700 indoor / outdoor carpet adhesive from amazon link and theyre light and flexible. it was about 20$ for a gallon and my rugs. one thing to note is that the carpet glue smells very strong so its best to use it in a well ventilated area and let it dry for a couple of days. im not sure if its available in france but maybe try looking for something similar to this?
ahh man I thought I uploaded a pic of my backing but yes I use This and I just use elmers spray adhesive till it full sticks and then step on it a bunch to get it to lay flat
Lol Thanks! Honestly I just bought a couple of different needles and decided to go for it. It had to be earlier this year when I started coming across punch needle on YouTube and I thought I would give it a try after watching some videos. So after months, I finally tried a couple of pieces. For the ‘dope’ piece, I printed the image and traced it using a light pad/box from amazon that I already had. And for the other piece, I just randomly drew those sections and punched. I’ve bought a punch needle set from walmart, one from hobby lobby and two needle set from amazon. I just wanted to try a variety of sizes so getting so many isn’t necessary; however, I didn’t pay too much for them. I’ve bought monks cloth from walmart (its an ok choice for using a large punch needle), which is the fabric I used for the colorful piece. The punch needle cloth for ‘dope’ came from amazon. I’m not sure if it’s true monks cloth but it worked great for my smaller punch needles and I’m fine with using it. There are quite a few good tutorials for punch needle on YouTube so that will give you some guidance but to be honest, it’s not hard...the only thing you have to worry about is stabbing yourself with the needle but then that will depend on how you hold your frame. You should definitely go for it. It’s totally relaxing. I plan to make my hubby an ottoman/pouf for when he’s gaming.
BTW - I used embroidery thread for the ‘dope’ piece and worsted weight yarn for the other (I’m a crocheter so I have tons).
Yeah, I got it from Amazon but other retailers should have it! In this set I used the larger one to fit the chunky wool through! https://www.amazon.co.uk/MILWARDS-Punch-Needle-Set-Regular/dp/B07Y5BC753
