Do you have a link? What is it, a collection of short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle or by other authors?
If it's the canonical short stories, I recommend you get one with the original illustrations, like this one
Hey! I have a copy of “The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection”, part of the Barnes & Nobles Leatherbound Classics. It is a 1000+ pages, and from what I can tell it has the whole collection, 56 short stories and 4 novels. The pages also have this absolutely beautiful gold/brass lining that gives it this antique/vintage look. I love it, it’s one of the favourite pieces in my collection. However I bought mine a couple of years back so not sure how easy it is to find right now, but I think it may be worth the search! Here’s the link for Amazon UK: The Complete Sherlock Holmes (Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classic Collection): Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classics https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1435167902/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nIZKFbZHJSK2K.
Beginning in the middle of the series, you will see Holmes gain weight (Brett's water retention from his medications) and lose energy. Despite this, his performance is always consistently sound.
There's a great book written by Michael Cox, the producer of the series, about that experience -- A STUDY IN CELLULOID. It's a bit hard to find now, but here's an AMAZON link where 20 reviewers give it on average 4.5 stars --
It is not the original format and there are no illustrations, but I have this edition and I am very happy with it, maybe you can check it out https://www.amazon.de/Penguin-Complete-Sherlock-Holmes/dp/0141040289/ref=sr_1_4?adgrpid=74832732167&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0eah37y49QIViP93Ch3aIACqEAAYASAAEgLa6_D_BwE&hvadid=353112203943&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1004611&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e... (Sorry for the long link btw, I have no idea how this works 😂😅)
I have read many pastiches of Holmes stories, but here is the best volume of Holmes stories not written by Doyle that I have encountered --
"Amazon.com: The Big Book of Sherlock Holmes Stories (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) (9781101872611): Penzler, Otto: Books" https://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Stories-Vintage-Original/dp/1101872616
By other authors. I was hoping to get more information on it by somebody who has already read the book.
Thank you.
I wouldn't :
- It's a novel where I prefer short stories.
- It sounds like a thriller
- "[...] a case which tests Watson's friendship and the fragility and gifts of Sherlock Holmes' own artistic nature to the limits" does not sound like my cup of tea...
As to whether you should, it's a matter of whether you like the blurb and the excerpt. Without surprise opinions vary wildly on its merits and should be a reminder that anything one values dearly is someone else's trash.
No just the pictures sadly. I have a few of their other books and the quality is amazing though. Definitely books that will last, especially if they are taken care of. I've thought about buying the Easton Press Holmes set for awhile now but I honestly have way too many versions of the compete stories from other companies, though none as nice as this one. They are a little pricey too but the payment plan makes it a little easier to swallow. Another good idea if you want something a little cheaper would be an annotated version. I have an older set form William S. Baring-Gould that is usually not too hard to find. There is also the modern one from Leslie Klinger. Both editions are hardback and complete collection with a lot of extra information too. Klingers is a three volume set and usually you can buy the short stories together and the third one, the novels, is sold separately. Here is a link to Klingers version of the short stories https://www.amazon.com/New-Annotated-Sherlock-Holmes-Complete/dp/0393059162
I bought this edition this month and I'm very happy with it. One book for all. Contains all illustrations except for the first two novels. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1840220767?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Really enjoying the Bonnie MacBird series - Art in The Blood and Unquiet Spirits - there's a new out in October, The Devils' Due - authentic without resorting to pastiche, cracking stories too. Proper page turners, highly recommended.
