I Personally don't like spinners. They don't appeal to my tactile habit. Instead I found on Amazon alternate 'fidgets' or sensory toys that are more for my habit of pinching and pulling. See link below.
gel fidget for pinching & flicking
Another thing... If you know twisting and snapping hair is your habit, have you ever thought about making your own 'hair' toys? I've made fake hair pieces before and it's pretty cheap to buy a lot of hair. You could make your own set up to twist and break instead of your own hair.
Right there with you. About 3 weeks ago I had a full head of hair. Fairly certain that most of my office has noticed that something us up, I didn't just spontaneously gain a bald spot in that time frame. Sucks but all I can do is try to stay mindful.
My psychiatrist recommended the book The Feeling Good Handbook and it's being delivered today. He mentioned this when I asked about cognitive behavior therapy as any and all medicinal routes I have undergone have proven ineffective for me. If you'd like, I can update you as to my thoughts after having read it.
Take care and don't beat yourself up. You're a human being deserving of love, respect, and happiness. We're all flawed, our's is just a more visible flaw!
We should be up voting this guys! I love the idea!
<Trichotillomania usually begins in the preteens but has been reported in children as young as one year old and has been seen first in adults over 50 years old. Patients in their seventies may suffer from trichotillomania. The mean age of onset is 12 years of age in girls and eight years of age in boys. This condition is seven times more common in children than in adults. Among young children there is no gender preference. But among adults, it is reported up to 10 times more often in females than in males. This may be skewed because females are more likely to seek attention for a medical problem, and because it is easier for males to disguise their compulsions, e.g. by shaving or because of social acceptance of male pattern hair loss.
Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078WL83TH/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (Check the measurments for the sizes before ordering. They will also look super short out of the package but stretch lengthwise.) I find myself running my hands over my legs and finding 'problems' when I can't even see them (case in point, sitting at a bridal shower today in a maxi-dress), this is (so far) proving a better barrier than giant bandaids or kneesocks.
I apologize for assuming you were a woman! Nice to see a gentleman trichster on the board.
There are prosthesis for facial hair! https://johnblakeswigs.com/product-category/facial-hair/. They cost just as much as wigs do, unfortunately.
Your scarf idea is fantastic. A balaclava is another option and would cover over the mustache area. Amazon has some in multipacks that aren’t crazy expensive (KALILY 6PCS Headband Bandana - Versatile Sports & Casual Headwear –Multifunctional Seamless Neck Gaiter, Headwrap, Balaclava, Helmet Liner, Face Mask for Camping, Running, Cycling, Fishing etc https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K4ZBQKS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_YaShCb5A0SY2Z). The style I linked, I own two sets of them. They have lasted years and although I wear them like a kerchief, they’re tubes of slightly stretchy fabric that have multiple uses.
I’m glad you’re thinking about seeing a therapist. It might help you tremendously - and there is little to lose besides a little time & cash if it’s not for you.
Take care and good luck!!
Would it be best to order one from you guys directly or Amazon? A verified review would go a longer way on their site.
My concern is a warranty. You've got mixes reviews with your product not working or the wristband breaking with poor customer support.
Have these things been addressed? Whats the best way to get a warranty on your device?
Sure, I've read quite a few. The first one I ever read was Self-Esteem by Matthew McKay and that one really changed my life. My other favorites are mostly Buddhist-oriented such as Pema Chodron's books When Things Fall Apart and Start Where You Are. Thich Nhat Hanh is another wonderful Buddhist author who wrote one of my favorite books, The Miracle of Mindfulness. Oh, and if you haven't read Christina Pearson's book Pearls, it's a must read for all hair pullers. She's the founder of TLC and Pearls is like a daily devotional, meant to be read a page a day.
My brother and I have spent several months developing an Android app Slightly Robot specifically for trich that tracks your progress. If you have an Android Wear smartwatch it'll automatically detect when you're pulling your hair so that you don't need to remember to input the data manually. (This also helps you notice when you're pulling your hair unconsciously.) If an Android Wear smartwatch is too expensive for you, or you want to track both hands, we're developing a smaller wearable that can also detect when you're pulling your hair.
The app is and will always be free and contains no advertising. It's pretty basic right now so if you want more features just let us know and we can add them.
This book outlines a combined treatment approach that can work well. It's not easy, but it's a good way of thinking about it. If you can find a therapist who will work in this way with you, that could also help: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-Body-Focused-Repetitive-Behaviors-Comprehensive/dp/1684033640
I found the same stone on amazon. I still cant figure out the best glue but the stone is only $10 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07W2VTRJL/ref=crt_ewc_img_huc_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A33QJT8YC0TMQ
maybe u can use a split end trimmer
https://www.amazon.com/Split-Ender-PRO2-Black-Talavera/dp/B0722KSGMC?th=1
like this one (not a advertisment)
i pluck out my beard split end but it never gets long enough for me to consider that
good luck
I pick the same areas, especially ingrowns. What helped me to at least reduce picking at ingrowns was I started waxing - it’s a lot more sanitary, and amazon sells wax warmers and the waxing beans for around $20-$40. Because I know I’m going to wax soon I’ll leave my hairs alone because the satisfaction of getting everything mostly at once is worth it - I’ve completely stopped picking my armpits and no longer get ingrowns there, and the scarring is starting to fade which is also another added benefit of waxing. As far as pubic hairs, I still get a lot of ingrowns but for fear of additional scarring (as if my skin doesn’t look like a battle field already) I started using these glycolic acid pads on my ingrowns and they’ve helped to dry them out and bring them to the surface (which helps me with cutting down on digging). I’ve also been trying (moderate success) to only loosen the ingrowns (so instead of plucking them out completely, I’ll leave them and when I go to wax they’re pulled out then).
I know waxing is basically picking still but for me it helps because it’s a lot more sanitary, and it helps when I start subconsciously picking, to tell myself “let it go, you can wax everything all off at once tomorrow” (or whenever I plan on waxing).
Thank you so much! I got them on Amazon, they have a couple different styles to try, I went with the 733.
There is a product called Control It! that you could try.
https://www.amazon.com/Control-Sucking-All-Natural-Kid-Safe-Deterrent/dp/B000BH1G3C
You can also use the same bittergent sprays that pet owners use to discourage puppies from chewing on things, but it doesn’t stay in one spot, meaning you’ll likely end up tasting it all the time, even when not intended.
I've tried a few different fidgets and I actually found one that helps me more than I expected. It's called a fidgipod (took me awhile to find it on Amazon but this is the type that I have: https://www.amazon.com/FIDGIPOD-NUMBER-SELLING-CHILDREN-SENSORY/dp/B00DTX9GE6/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=fidgipod&qid=1600403642&sr=8).
I like that it's flat so I easily/naturally set it next to me and use it while reading, on the computer, etc. I don't know if this makes sense, but my fingertips seem to have become extra sensitized to that "pokey" type of eyebrow hair feeling over the years of rubbing my eyebrows...and this really does help soothe that urge a bit. It's not exactly the same and I do have to make the effort to pick up the toy and start to use it instead, etc, but it does help me.
Edited to add: the pics on this Amazon page make it look more of a hard plastic than mine is (assuming it's just the photo). Mine is a rubbery material and the spikes are hard but a bit flexible, so hopefully that is the same here. I find the spikes soothing/enjoyable to play with. Sounds so weird haha but maybe people here will get that :)
I get it off of Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QUX812K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). My hair is a little thin in the two spots I've pulled from the most (one's kinda center on top of my head along the right side of the part and then in the back at the end of my part), but it seems to be growing back although about 5-6 strands so far are growing back white/clear (hoping it's stress and will change back to brown as a few other strands did in that spot started out white for a few inches before growing out normally). My sister claims the thinness is hardly noticeable and I've been parting it a bit off-center to help with my own personal judgment (because I know it's there, I just see this "bald spot" [dime-sized now] with wiry/kinky hair sticking up and then get upset by it). According to other information I found from hair professionals/medical websites, it can take up to 6 years for follicles to fully recover so I'm hoping that I can keep up with not pulling anymore and that any thinness will disappear.
Looks like on amazon people are switching to this product since the clear has been discontinued. After reading the reviews on clear I’m sad I never got to try it :)

Here ya go If ya havent found it yet! I've used it for a while and it does help a lot. But ya also need to try and curb the pulling too. It's super hard sometimes uhg. I found getting into the Pokemon TCG helped me quite a bit. I made a few friends from the events around here and I hang with them when I can. Helps to be active!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ogx-Biotin-Collagen-Shampoo-385/dp/B00MXZJ362
Not sure what OP uses, but I use the Kiara Sky system. It's nail dip and super easy. If you can paint your fingernails, you can use nail dip. No odor, no mixing, just paint, dip, repeat. Minimal filing as you get better at it. It's about $100 for the system with 5 different powders. I got mine from Amazon.
Okay so this is gunna sound weird but it worked for me: Pet Coat Rebuilder - Mega-Tek 16 oz - Repairs Damaged Coat and Paw Pads and Accelerates Hair growth on Bare Spots https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00061MPGK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_pcKHybQ17S92V
It's a pet conditioner but it helped me regrow around my bangs by using it as a spot treatment in those areas like a conditioner and the headband so I wouldn't pull my new growth.
It smells AMAZING and makes your hair so soft you won't even believe it.
Ha! I personally have given up on trying to grow a beard - For me it's currently an area I don't care about since it so easy to hide.
Some other ideas that might help: Find a fiddle toy you like. For me personally I hate sticky feeling object so silly putty it terrible, and can make my trich actually worse. Soft fuzzy objects work the best for me.
I can't find a good photo, but the purple one in this photos that has a variable length are my favorite pipe cleaners. I fold the tip in to prevent it from poking me and often just wrap it and leave it around one of my fingers.
Posture! Seriously this is a huge one, but with studying it might be hard to execute, but since working on my posture at work I reduced my pulling at work by 90-95% Working on posture is one of the most effective methods against trich for males
https://www.amazon.com/Clippermill-MQ1735-Sensory-Brushes-Pack/dp/B001U1UFYE Sensory Brushes are another one of my fidgets - The plus side of these is I can pull the little plastic brushes off.
You may want to look into NAC as well - It's not a miracle cure by any means but can help reduce urges around 10-40% I take around 1200-2400/mg a day
Anyhow good luck with finals - and hide / destroy the tweezers if you do have them.
I've had moderate success with NAC. I was really hoping for it to be a instant cure all, but alas that was not my case. I do notice about a 10-30% reduction in pulling taking the same dosage. I take 1200mg after breakfast and then another 1200mg sometime 5-8 hours later. I was recommended to take a multi vitamin as well with NAC.
I've also found a new fiddle toy - sensory brushes and you can find them on amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Clippermill-MQ1735-Sensory-Brushes-Pack/dp/B001U1UFYE/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1472230717&sr=8-3&keywords=sensory+brush (remember you can swap out 'www' with 'smile' and choose the TLC foundation so they get a small cut of the profit!)
I just started seeing a trich specialist therapist and she had recommended those so I have the 12 pack on the way. My plan is to leave those things every where and try to always keep them in my hands. Not only are they super stimulating, I find I can pull the bristle outs pretty easily as well. First session with her I look down and find I did some decent carnage to the brush! Much better than my hair!
A few other commentators have mentioned here, you really need deal with any issues you have first before you try to tackle trich. Self acceptance is probably the biggest one. In my case I've been seeing a psychotherapist to help with more general issues in my life. My parents did nothing for me in regards to trich. I've been dealing with depression and a sense of worthlessness due to my childhood as well. I've made awesome progress seeing my main therapist for the past 2 months so I'm finally at a point that I can start working on trich.
So am I. The paper tape conforms to your fingers after about an hour of use, and after a few days, you cant even tell you have it on. I'm typing with it on 4 of my fingers right now (thumbs, indexes).
I text with it on all the time. All the time. I also draw and weave and do crafts in it. Nexus 3M paper first aid tape is the shit.
Wrap up your pulling fingers.
Thank you so much for your post because I used your suggestion to find the best solution that has worked for me by far!!!! I got Lee Tippi Micro Gel Fingertip Grips (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CHUE4IU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00) because I was concerned about the smell of the rubber ones and I am sensitive to odor (plus I like the multi colors that include clear that I can wear out in public if I need to). My pulls are almost all motivated by texture and singling one strand of hair out. So if I can't feel it, it takes the "satisfaction" out of it. There are rubber ridges on the "pads of fingers" that I like to mess with too. I only wear them on the fingers that I use for the pull...thumb, index, middle. Again, thank you so much for your suggestion!
7 Weeks, here's the link:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ryan.brooks.sevenweeks.app
It has been helpful for me, I like being able to remind myself throughout the day as well. So far so good. I hope it helps!
