That discussion of the man bag brought back memories of my own (Dutch!) dad similarly using one, perhaps around the same time as Brady’s dad? This was in the mid/late 1980s and I think my dad stopped using it at some point in the early/mid 1990s. They have gone out of style so not easy to find a pic, but this is somewhat close:
