The Dynamic Earth, Plate Tectonics [Tubed] (National Geographic Reference Map) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1597754552/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_vVIAAbNY6PK4R
This has been on my Amazon list for ages. I think it’s something of what you’re looking for!
Edit: a map of active volcanoes wouldn’t be useful because volcanic activity is always changing. So what I would suggest is gifting her that poster with a set of red thumbtacks so she can mark locations of active volcanoes of interest herself! It’d be pretty fun to do, I think.
Volcanoes: What's Hot and What's Not on Earth and in Our Solar System looks like a good one, though I haven't read it yet.
Hi there,
First off, one of my PhD supervisors recently wrote a book about being a volcanologist which you can find here. It might be helpful to you.
If you really want to be at one with volcanoes then my suggestion is to go down an academic route. Maybe you've made a mess of your AS Levels but you get to resit and try again later. Having Physics as one of your subjects is a real bonus. If you go down this route then a degree in geography or geology is among the best ways to prepare yourself. I did physics for my first degree and that was massively helpful in terms of skills but not so much in the specific knowledge.
You may be able to find work monitoring volcanoes around the world, but in my experience of looking for these things they don't pay well (if anything) and generally require you to be pretty well educated.
It's often worth looking at the British Geological Survey's website for job vacancies as they sometimes advertise volcanology related positions. Again, in my experience they usually require a high level of education, often a PhD.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anything else if you like :)
If you make one for Android please post a link. I've tried every single one I can find and the only decent one I've found is only available in Portugese (Eros Geologicas)!
