I would still advise against swimming with PD but I used 2" wide tegaderm tape for exit site care, there is also a 4" and 6" size as well. The 6" would probably be big enough to cover everything, catheter included.
As chronic kidney disease progresses to end-stage renal disease, signs and symptoms might include:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/end-stage-renal-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20354532
She's probably getting a permcath fixed.
Everything you're seeing are typical symptoms. She's very sick, but give it a day or two to start turning around.
It was blood pressure for me -- but a little different. I had untreated malignant hypertension.
I don't have any of the risk factors for it, am white, not low income, late 20s. My blood pressure when I went into the hospital was 210/190. No one knows why it happened.
My clinic gave me a 5 gallon plastic jug I could drain into and dump out later, which seems more sanitary than draining directly into the toilet. Ask your clinic for one, and if not you can buy one online.
My dad is 90 and is on dialysis. He’s been taking these mushroom supplements daily so it helps. Also, exercising helps.
So.. I bought these to help me get through the catheter time. I never missed a shower. https://www.amazon.com/Shower-Shield-Catheter-Water-Barrier/dp/B00I0WB0HM/ref=sr\_1\_2?dchild=1&keywords=shower+guard+catheter&qid=1626809017&sr=8-2
Aw 😆 yeah tough love is needed sometimes. Btw i made a Dialysis LogBook for my mother and it contains -Dietitian list with low and high potassium fruits. - A Meal planner so you can write down meals you like to make for your loved one whose in dialysis. -Personal Medical History you can record for the next Doctors appointment. -Peritoneal Dialysis treatment log to write down and keep track of their blood pressure, glucose, weight and temperature. -section for notes.
I created it for my mother. If interested here's the link. Its very affordable. Itll be a great gift too. Hope this helps your husband if he undergoes dialysis or if you know of anyone who struggles with this too.
[Dialysis Logbook]
Best things I have gotten from my clinic:
A gym style bag, but a bit smaller. I use it every session.
A mini umbrella. Similar to this
A blanket that folds into itself with a handle stitched on it.
A neck pillow.
Those are the ones I use regularly.
There are barrier wipes that leave a film that protects the skin. You would need approval from the clinic. I had the least reaction to mepore island dressing but I had to alternate sizes so that the adhesive didn’t cover the same spot each day. I know you said she tried those but maybe maybe alternating sizes will give her skin enough of a rest.
A more diy option is using a tube top with a G pad or loose gauze placed inside over the exit site. If her exit site is healed, they may not even require the gauze barrier. You can also ask about something like this but you could probably get multiple tube tops cheaper.
Good luck, I hope she finds something that works 💚
Tegaderm! I have all kinds of reactions to all the different types of tape. I used to use skin-prep which helped to a degree but left a buildup of residue that was difficult to get off.
I bought this from Amazon and have been using it for the past few weeks with great success. There's still some extremely mild irritation but nothing compared to the tape.
What I do is use a 2x2 on top of my exit site, then I use strips of tegaderm I've cut to size (cut 2x ~2.5" width off of roll, cut that in half across the seem) around the border. I even cut a small strip of tegaderm for the anchor tape too, it holds so much better.
Basically what everyone else is saying. I'm 33 and on dialysis, it isn't fun. I had some luck with holistic remedies like herbs, but I didn't work out as I'd hoped. Look into the Renal diet, there are some cookbooks on Amazon. I wish I had this one when I was at stage 3 Stopping Kidney Disease Food Guide: A recipe, nutrition, and meal planning guide to treating the factors driving the progression of incurable kidney disease. Hopefully it this helps. I have hypertension (thank you genetics) and got the right dosage of my pills, it's helped a lot. Good luck!

lol yeah 😋 you'll be sore for about a week, I remembered it would hurt when I laughed.
Good Luck and I hope you start benefitting from PD.
I take a very careful bath. I soak for a few minutes & make sure my exit site isn’t touching water. I’ll soap up everywhere but my chest & arm areas. I’ll then use this (Scrubzz Disposable No Rinse Bathing Wipes - 25 Pack - All-in-1 Single Use Shower Wipes, Simply Dampen, Lather, and Dry Without Shampoo or Rinsing https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XQ9NQPQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_ARiWEb6NJBGSN) to wipe down very carefully around the exit site. It’s great because you just wipe dry, no need for water to wipe away.
Can’t wait to shower one day. My little catheter also sticks out of my armpit too - so annoying!
> I say do PD
I did for around 6 years, but I had an appendix almost burst. The emergency surgery made a mess of thing and I had an abscess. This ruined my peritoneal cavity.
> That's means no shower
This is probably my biggest obstacle, though I do use something like Askina Derm dressings
Omg twins! Just had my PD cath out and central line put in.
I was told water is the beginning of infection and to not shower.
BUT - I got Aqua Guard barrier shields from Amazon and they worked great!
I used tape over the edges to make double sure it was water tight and then I used a hand held shower thing to shower.
I only shower once a week because of the infection risk and use baby wipes to clean daily.
I do want to note that high blood pressure medications like this can help. Well, that's a supplement but I use it daily and it does work. It's basically equivalent to Lisinopril or Losartan.
I took that before my surgery and I was also put to sleep during surgery and my surgeon mentioned how my vein got really big so he was able to make it with the smallest incision. I'm pretty sure the size of the artery and vein matters mainly or most importantly during the fistula surgery itself.
So, High blood pressure medication and general anesthesia are just something to think about. Because the first doctor in the surgical group told me that I had small veins and no good veins and he said he could only do a graft but second doctor said he could put me under anesthesia.
When I started HD dialysis with a catheter in my chest, I was in the hospital and they had me shower and gave me shower shields. I didn't like them since they were inflexible and water would get under them. When I went to the dialysis center they told me I couldn't shower. I figured that if the hospital wanted me to shower it should be an issue with the dialysis center. After several discussions and "permission" from my doctor the center said I could shower. I used waterproof tape over the bandage they put on https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P71N2SD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I didn't keep the link for the bandages/clear covers that I found. They covered the bandage and partway down the catheter. The kidney center finally started using the clear/waterproof bandages when they cleaned around the catheter each time. I was on HD with a chest catheter for 2.5 years. The nurse always told me about other people's infections, but they did a good job of cleaning around the area so I didn't get any infections.
I hope you do well on HD and find a solution that meets your needs.
My husband has had his for about 16 months we have tried several and these are the best https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08WYQ1CPR just a tip leave the front sides on until the whole thing is stuck down, if you remove them at any other point it gets super hard and frustrating they work great though as long as the top part is stuck down very well, and smoothed over. Water only ever seems to come through the top for us anyway. Also probably let your husband put down the armpit side, when I try it rips hair out coming off so he always does that part since he can feel around where he has hair and doesn't lol! Good luck! oh and put it up higher than you think you need it, top coverage is the most essential part!
I use these:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HGSL9D1/
I know it says to use one wipe for one area but honestly I just use the whole wipe for my whole body. I use it on the face, avoiding the eyes. I use it last on my butt area because normally water cleans that area and well it's important to clean it.
so pain in your right shoulder, thats gas from the surgery. Put your legs above your heart.
My biggest suggestion for PD is to get one of these (https://www.amazon.com/MandM-Peritoneal-Dialysis-Transfer-Holder/dp/B08BK5Y7WX/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=baxter+pd+catheter+holder&qid=1666396840&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIzLjM5IiwicXNhIjoiMi42MyIsInFzcCI6IjIuNTcifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=pd+baxter+%2Caps%2C87&a...) instead of taping the cath to your stomach or those annoying elastic wraps.
Another piece of hardware i would get is a cart to put your cycler on, that way you can roll it around, with the power cable you get like an extra 6 feet of movement, which for me was the difference between getting to door!
LiquaCel is great for when you’re on dialysis, comes in sugar-free and helps keep your protein up.
Yeah, I used to take these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MJPVZC6/
I prefer Heme Iron as the regular iron supplements never really did much for me. Heme Iron is like the iron from beef and pork. It's much better absorbed. But my dietitian said to stop taking it because too much iron causes infection.
I use this belt which is pretty comfortable. Only downside is that the plastic piece the belt threads through tends to get bunched up in the fabric in a weird way. Hard to describe. I buy a new one every couple months because they do stretch out and the velcro goes weak.
Also, I use one of those necklace things like the other people post when I get in the shower. Keeps the catheter from just swinging any which way.
I have used this for a couple of years, fairly comfortable.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BHRB6Y2?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Personally, I bring my own tablet, attach it to the arm with this and connect my headphones to my tablet.
I alternate between watching Netflix/Hulu and connecting to my PC at home to play video games (although there are games you can play directly on a tablet too, like from the Play Store). Doing that, the 3.5 hours goes by fast.
I'm using Sennheiser HD 280. I find them very comfortable and it has great audio. It's not super high end though it's not incredibly cheap either a nice middle ground.
I use this burrito blanket as it amuses me when I see it.
I usually surf on my phone and watch television. Some people bring a switch to play games on.
Yes generally they ramp up on treatment starting with a low amount then gradually increasing to the full session length.
Well, if I had to choose between the two, I'd choose having a little bit of extra fluid versus them pulling too much fluid.
The main two ways extra fluid is harmful is either edema and fluid getting into places it shouldn't (lung, heart, etc.) or the fluid staying in your bloodstream which increases your blood pressure.
If your albumin is high, the former shouldn't really happen. So the latter is generally the problem, and can be alleviated with blood pressure medication that dilates the blood vessels. This is of course assuming you have BP meds.
I'm actually taking a supplement, not a prescription drug. But it's been shown to be comparable to losartan. And of course I've measured the BP change with my BP monitor at home.
a gooseneck mount for a cell phone. like this and a set of comfortable headphones. You are there for like 4 hours so being able to stream movies on your phone is great. For snacks, hard candies are always a good choice.
I don't think what you're wanting is available. Because think of something like beef or chicken. You'd have to dry it to make it a snack, and then you basically have slim jims. And there's a reason they put lots of salt in it. Same problem with dried tofu. Dried tofu generally also has quite a bit of salt added.
I think you'd be better off looking for a good enough tasting protein bar. These ZonePerfect bars have 15g of protein and I'd say they taste good enough:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VDRN1XF/
Because if you look at renal supplements like Novasource Renal, you'll see they have quite a bit of sugar. Like it has 43g of sugar.
These are brilliant, seal the area perfectly but are very gentle to take off. This is uk but sure if you’re in other parts of the world you can get the same, make sure you get the window ones as they are very easy to apply! https://www.amazon.co.uk/34901-Tegaderm-Transparent-Film-10-12/dp/B01DA5I1ES/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=1IE4WZAH1KMZS&keywords=tegaderm&qid=1656699832&sprefix=teg%2Caps%2C99&sr=8-4
You can buy used on ebay for much cheaper.
/r/IceChewersAnonymous has people who talk about chewing ice and options.
Gevi Nugget apparently is the slightly cheaper option.
Does she like sweets?
You might want to try miracle fruit tablets. They are a novelty fruit from Africa that coats the taste buds that coverts bitter/sour flavors into sweet.
They're popular as a novelty, but I've also heard they've been useful after radiation and/or chemo.
https://www.amazon.com/mberry-Miracle-Fruit-Tablets-10-Count/dp/B001LXYA5Q something like this or a similar product.
I had a catheter for a long time due to graft/fistula issues. I did home hemo so I cleaned mine every treatment. 4 times a week. Make sure to use an effective shower shield over it. I used the following shower guards. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007ED2SZ6?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_asin_title
I use the Bose 700 headphones at dialysis. They are Bluetooth but also have a headphone jack you can plug into.
> Are headphones now bluetooth to connect to cellphones?
A few newer cellphones like my A52 still have the audio jack, but if he has an iPhone then it's only Bluetooth without an extra dongle/adapter.
> connect to the TV
I've seen the TVs at my clinic. Bluetooth won't work so you need one with an audio cable.
> I think noise cancelling might be important to cancel the machine noise but I don't really know how it works.
Up to you but personally I recommend noise isolation. The way noise cancellation works is it has a small microphone to listen for low-frequency noise and emit a wave to cancel it out. That works well for constant noise, like humming of air conditioning.
My experience is at the center there are a lot of alarms and a lot of people talking loudly, and then also people watching TVs without headphones. Noise cancelling isn't really good for cancelling that sort of high frequency noise. See article for more information.
These are the headphones I use, personally.
I've traveled with the NxStage HHD cycler fairly often over the past 4 years. Just returned home today, in fact, after 5 days on the road --2 sessions in hotel rooms.
The cycler is heavy. I built a special cart for going down steps and from the van to the hotel room. There's another cart for dialysate, supplies, and clothing. The handle folds flat. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083HZL8T6
The cycler & dialysate are about 2/3rds of what you'll need to carry --the list of supplies seems to go on & on. Definitely make a checklist. Due to the sheer size of everything needed, I've only traveled by van.
Get the chair with side tables if you're US Medicare.
2 items that reduced frustration once on a fistula:
A good pro, one-handed tourniquet instead of the latex straps. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0026KAB5Q
Narrow Saran wrap on a dispenser for covering lidocaine https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D5ZLCJ1
Tablet, car tablet holder (attaches to the arm for the TV), headphones with portable white noise machine, scarf (scarf is for elevating my elbow on my fistula side due to the way they sometimes attach the tubes), power bank, bluetooth gamepad, handheld fan, modified Google Cardboard VR goggles (i'm nearsighted and it also helps block visual distractions).
> She was initially taking iron supplements which did not improve her iron levels.
Yeah, those don't really work well.
If you can afford them, I'd recommend Heme Iron pills instead (which come from red meat so it's much better absorbed):
https://smile.amazon.com/Supplement-Absorption-Hemoglobin-Ferritin-Pregnancy/dp/B09N25B65N/
https://smile.amazon.com/Proferrin-ES-Polypeptide-Dietary-Supplement/dp/B00MJPVZC6/
I bought this microwave stand and it has worked really well for me. The cycler fits perfectly on the top shelf, and the second shelf has room for two bags (but I only use one extra bag so I use half the shelf for supplies). The third shelf also has a lot of room for supplies.
Hi,
I struggled for a while. The sena hurt my belly and had little impact. Ducalax worked but hurt too. I do Mira lax every night. I had inconsistent results until I added a pre and probiotic. If you have money you can get VLS3 from Costco. It's behind the pharmacy counter. I really like the amazon brand. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GPFB6FJ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details I think it's a good idea to mix them up.
I had this problem, too. I experimented with numerous ways to remove the bandage without opening the scab but nothing worked. Then I found some gel that my wife had bought after surgery. Works great! I use Sure Seals and put a dab of the gel on the entry site before covering.
AmazonSmile: Aloe Life-Skin Gel and Herbs,99% Certified Organic,Whole Leaf Aloe Vera Plus Vitamin A, C, E and Herbs, Whole Leaf Aloe Vera is Processed and Concentrated to Give the Best Results (Unscented,4 Ounce) : Beauty & Personal Care https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011DV7O8
Heme Iron Pills. The cheap ones don't really work that well. That's why insurance pays for IV iron.
Now could you eat a lot of steak? As shown here, beef does have heme iron. Yes, you could, but the downside is how much you would have to eat to match what you could get from a pill (each pill has 10.5 mg of iron) and the urea buildup.
My 87 year old dad is on HD. He uses this and has skin nicer than me! He has to apply daily, otherwise his dry skin comes back quickly.
Eucerin Skin Calming Lotion - Full Body Lotion for Dry, Itchy Skin, Natural Oatmeal Enriched - 16.9 fl. oz Pump Bottle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0107QOYIK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_WKAYD8KCKT1PCDGC60DW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Davita and Fresenius both have databases with a list of the potassium in foods. I also will use https://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/generic/honey but you have to watch out with it because they only reproduce the labels on foods and if the labels don't include potassium you are out of luck.
> However now they've moved me to a TV that doesnt work at all and wont be fixed and they can't move me anywhere so they say.
Personally I use my own tablet with this tablet holder connected to the TV arm. Like you're pretty limited if you just watch what's on TV, compared to being able to use Netflix and Hulu.
forget the belt, go with a lanyard. It is so much more convenient than dealing with velcro and readjusting and all that. https://www.amazon.com/MandM-Peritoneal-Dialysis-Transfer-Holder/dp/B085BCRR37/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=pd+showermate&qid=1633614522&sr=8-4
I found that more than the belt I used a girdle? Body contour slip? It's just a slip I found that I could cover my whole belly area to keep the tube secure and not moving near the port. Obviously it's not FOR body contouring, you don't want it too tight, but here's a link to something similar. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06ZXVCD7T/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_65F7ZP3QQ237W5FKFEBE

I ended up using this. It’s soft and didn’t irritate my skin. Plus I could either just tuck the cord in the band or put in the pocket depending on how secure it needed to be
Meidong E7B Active Noise... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FTFK7QC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
This was like three years ago. They likely have updated models. Great great bang for your buck. And still working
I use Golden Home mini pizzas, good on sodium & potassium Golden Home Ultra Thin mini, they have large too. Found them at Sprouts and Dollar Tree.
I make low salt pizza at home and while it doesn't taste the same it still tastes pretty good. I use this seasoning:
https://www.amazon.com/Marshalls-Creek-Spices-Pizza-Seasoning/dp/B00BYHPM0G
It's easily my favorite no salt spice mix.
For sauce, I use trader Joe's no salt marinara. Obviously this one will be tricky, first you'd have to know his potassium limit, but also be able to find that or an alternative brand.
I use nutritional yeast and ground cashews in place of cheese. Might have to watch phosphorus.
The only significant sodium source would be the crust, but dealer's choice on that one. Anything reasonable you can find, doesn't even have to be a crust.
I mean sort of yeah, but it's like rain for example. The whole point is that even if it's somewhat loud, it's background noise, so it doesn't really bother me, but at the same time it blocks out the annoying noises. It's sort of like a loud hvac system. The only real downside is that I can't hear someone if they're trying to talk to me.
This is the machine I use:

My dad is on dialysis and takes these mushroom supplements. He’s 87 and his energy has greatly improved since taking them.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078SJ9F5S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_0SJPT27NQYBHTW796ZPE
I just use Tegaderm since I heard it was recommended on this subreddit. It's really easy since you just put it on like a bandage. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O5YRPU/
For me with my fistula sometimes I have a constant pain after the initial stick. My understanding is that it's due to nerves and the fact that my fistula is new and there's not much the techs can do about that, because the nervous system is closely linked to the circulatory system.
You may also want to try to take Acetaminophen beforehand if it's that painful. It's true that the dialysis will filter it out, but I think it can still help.
The worst thing IMO is holding my arm still for four hours. I guess that depends on where his access is, (If its a catheter or a fistula etc). It is cold AF in there, I found dialysis hoodies that unzip where the access point is, which have been fantastic. I also bring a small blanket and a small pillow to prop my arm up with. Also, it depends on how his clinic is set up but Ive been bring an iPad or Nintendo Switch with an iPad stand that clamps to the side of the chair. The switch is great because the controllers operate so you can keep your arms still, and the iPad is great for Netflix etc. Depending on what your dad is into, occupying your mind is the best way to pass the time.
I had the same problem brining my nintendo. What I ended up doing was watching movies on my phone. I got a gooseneck mount that clipped onto my chair. I could watch about 2 full movies during session, or half a season of a new anime.
For a while I used skin prep but that also left my skin irritated.
Most recently I switched to using tegaderm tape I found on Amazon. I get the 2" roll and cut it in half horizontally and leave a small window in the middle of a 2x2 stressing.
My sister who has been on dialysis for the last 5 years and has the same issue with the tape so we found this stuff and she really likes it: It's a non adhesive tape that's also non latex and keeps gauze on well.
I use this belt. It is very elastic, and it doesn't matter how long your tranfer set is. I also have a stickman brand, but it is not elastic and I used it one time in 8 months.
It's a little wipe kind of like the alcohol pads that I use around my exit site where the adhesive goes on. It creates a barrier between the skin and adhesive that, for me at least, reduces irritation. One of the nurses recommended it to me a few months ago.
I bought mine on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000S9KLSY/. I have bought it twice from the seller Johnson Distributors and both have been legit.
I accidentally forgot to put it on 2 nights ago and now my skin is really irritated, so it's definitely doing something for me still.
I'm also going through testing a bunch at the moment looking for a decent one. I just use the Samsung health for weight/no/bgl but the fluid side kinda sucks because it limits it to "glass" of 250ml and you can't change it.
For fluid I'm currently trying this one and it seems decent
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.utilitech.watertracker
No ads, let's you set custom limits/goals, can set the size of your bottle and glass and can also add a custom amount
Only just started using it yesterday so still not sure if it's good or not but hope this helps
I generally feel fine. Sometimes I may see stars depending on my blood pressure.
I'm definitely at least a bit peckish considering that I don't eat anything during dialysis. So I might eat at 6-8am and then my treatment finishes at 3:30pm. I eat about 1000 calories in the morning to get me through the day.
I sometimes have a headache depending on my blood pressure. If anyone else has headaches, make sure you take your blood pressure medicine. I've also found Aged Garlic Extract to be pretty helpful with blood pressure. Apparently it's as good as or possibly better than losartan.
> WON'T TURN OFF HIS FUCKING CELLPHONE-BOOMBOX BULLSHIT FOR FOUR FUCKING HOURS...
Yeah, I'm super sensitive to sound due to how my brain processes sensory stimuli. I'd recommend /u/hxtespawn and anyone else on dialysis to get a white noise machine, noise isolating headphones and earplugs. I'd honestly say the white noise machine is a godsend. Because with the other two, sound still travels through your skull. But the white noise can become really loud and block out any other noise and you don't really notice it as a bother because it's supposed to be background noise like rain.
I found these: https://www.amazon.com/Bella-Lucia-Gluten-Pizzelles-Chocolate/dp/B074WWS2BR
Bella Lucia Pizzelles Serving size 1 pizzelle Potassium 33mg I don’t see any indication of Phosphorus
No dairy, no cocoa. (Really this time 🤦♂️)
I recommend easiclense cloth. I was given a pack after a stay in the hospital and was able to find it on amazon. It is rinse less, you get just the cloth a bit sudsy and use it like a washcloth. It then dries and you are good to go. I went six months without showering due to a CVC and never got a complaint about my odor.
>Bluetooth spring scale https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MXTDWUG/
This is the one that auto-logs with the Nxstage hhd app. Works great! Mine is accurate as we compared it repeatedly to our balance beam scale.
While on bluetooth subject, this is the bp monitor that they told me to get. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MXTDWUG/
We bought this book Renal Diet Cookbook: The Low Sodium, Low Potassium, Healthy Kidney Cookbook. There's a lot of good recipes, and a 28 day meal plan with grocery lists. Plus it has info on what foods are high and low in potassium, phosphorus etc
There are some calorie dense "kidney safe" drinks, though they're a little pricey. They're called Nepro Liquid Nutrition.
Here is an example link to amazon. 24-pack (8 oz) for $80. I've tried them and they're not bad, and each one is 425 calories.
