Your idea sounds pretty interesting, I found out about Geneforge yesterday after noticing that one of the company's games were on sale on Steam. From what I saw, there's a lot to talk about, but I haven't personally played any of the games yet.
I'm going to leave this here: A Dark Room - a game that makes use of your time in a beautiful way. It's not exactly the same way that other games do, like farmville or animal crossing because, in those games, the time frame is of hours, days, weeks. In A Dark Room, the time itself is one of the mechanics and it takes place in seconds, minutes, etc.
