I use the Sawyer Squeeze filter and CNOC Vecto bladder setup. Highly recommended.
The Sawyer filter is relatively light, fast, versatile, and cheap in the spectrum of water purification options. You can backflush it in the field to clean it out for faster flow rate.
The CNOC bladder is durable, easy to clean, fast to scoop, and ideal for dirty water. Just fill it from the water source, screw on the Sawyer filter, and roll it up - out comes clean water.
$50 for the combo - which should last a very long time even with heavy use.
I've been happy with my Columbia pants. Not sure where I'd look for them (I'm in the US), but they are carried by a place called 'Cotsworld' that has Scottland locations, so I think that's probably a good sign.
I've never paid anywhere close to MSRP for Columbia stuff, it always seems to be on sale someplace if you're not too picky about exactly what model you want.
I've got a few pair of these (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07RGM8GNX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1&pldnSite=1&sa-no-redirect=1&psc=1) and I've been happy with them. That stock photo on the UK site sucks, though - they look better in person
Of course! This is it https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FMFGGNR/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_NZA5BT9NN6P0SGGST815?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It weighs about a pound so is definitely not an UL pack but I can get several days worth of charging out of it and having 4 solar panels helps it to charge a lot faster than the one panel chargers.
Could you link to what you are thinking about. It sounds heavier than other options. Not on your list is small wood stoves which are very lightweight and you use twigs as fuel.

What is your budget? Here are some things I have tested and already gifted other people
- Source convertube is a really nice drink system system
- trailaqua https://www.amazon.de/dp/B09VL7GKGR
New filter on the market that is like a upgraded Saywer Squeeze and already comes with a bag that is similar to a cnoc bag
- Manker EOH3 is a fantastic Headlamp. If you buy that also buy 2 li-ion 14500 batteries with integrated micro usb loading port
Check this one.
I just bought this one for $14

Merino wool by Darn Tough. Expensive, but a lifetime warranty. You'll find yourself replacing your regular socks they're so good.
There are various thicknesses. I use thicker to start, and then switch to a thinner one after 10 miles, as the feet swell up.
Also, when you start to feel like a hotspot is forming, before it gets to a blister, hit it with some Leukotape. Moleskin is another antiblister adhesive aid that is more padded and will help give you relief after a blister has started.
OK. There's hiking shoes and there's basketball shoes. They do different things. Not sure what else to say. If he wants something waterproof, which I personally think is a good call, they have a WP version available in 15. Two styles on the Altra and all three on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/ALTRA-AL0A4VQH-All-WTHR-Trail-Running/dp/B08P4MC2QY/ref=sr\_1\_4?
I know your pain too well, and I'd rather wear thongs than shorts too. I am really happy with these: Under Armour Women's Pure Stretch Thong Underwear, 3-Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07813LS7T/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_65E070DZM4X8GNWKKYQG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Branwyn makes a great merino thong, too.
Hey if you don't end up finding a solution like you describing your post, this is what I carry for my dog, it's a bottle with a ball built into a lid that you have to squeeze to get the water to fill the bowl and then the water recedes back into the bottle when the dog is done drinking.

These are the best camp shoe solution I’ve found for cooler weather. A tad on the heavy side but very comfortable
I bought mine for $95 on Amazon and have hiked approximately 150 miles so far in hot weather, deep snow, mud, steep inclines, creek crossings, etc. they were comfortable right out of the box and have been a great pickup. I was worried that new boots would give me blisters while being worn-in, bit these were great.
I also own a pair of these - Columbia Men's Buxton Peak Hiking Shoe, Breathable, High-Traction Grip https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0787D6SN3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_76XSEJB8W5QF9YM2HJNC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1-
Incredibly comfortable and have awesome traction and a beefy toe. I prefer these over running shoes converted to trail runners.

I have something vaguely similar but it doesn’t telescope. It’s good for navigating windthrown trees and crossing creeks because it’s longer than the typical trekking pole.

I've done two and 4 day tours with Oxalis. I just wore Keen Sandals which were perfect for the task.
Not sure what trip you're doing, but unless it's Son Doong (which I haven't done) in which case I'd be guided by Oxalis, trekking sandals are fine. They'll lend you a pair of jungle boots (like the guides wear) if you want.
I have this one and really like it.

I have battery it's a decent 10k battery bank with the solar capabilities. Like others said, the size of these things doesn't capture enough energy to really be handy. I guess In a life or death situation it'll help, but it's not going to be quick. Overall I've had this for about 2+ years with no issues.
I agree what others said, without full direct sun and being stationary long enough it is a wash compared to just bringing a larger battery bank.
When I was doing my research this panel was the best for output Vs weight.

Very excited to announce the release of my second novel: Walkabout.
If you would like to order a copy please click the link or you can scan the QR code. Will be released as an audiobook on Audible later this week. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09RM3RC29/ref=sr\_1\_1?crid=2TWWNYAKT6CAW&keywords=walkabout+Andrew+wilcox&qid=1643731975&sprefix=walkabout+andrew+w%2Caps%2C1289&sr=8-1
I just read that there is a difference between a thermal layer and a moisture wicking layer. As an active hiker in cold weather, I’ve landed on these because apparently I want a moisture wicking layer so that when I stop moving the sweat doesn’t evaporate and cool me down too much. Thermal layers are for when you are sitting still, like at an outdoor concert.
Best laces I've every used outside of what comes with Salomons. Inexpensive, you get two pairs, they don't fray (at least mine haven't) and stay tied due to little ridges on them.
These might not be the same thing brand of socks but I'll link this
I bought these last year and they work great and the price is pretty good too. They are wool socks
I’m 6’ 6” and this was all I could find that I fit in. I have several inches before my head or feet touch the sides. My girlfriend and I were fairly comfortable in it with my 50lb dog so you may be able to get all your gear inside. That’s said it’s not as light as some other tents.
Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles - Carbon Fiber Walking or Hiking Sticks with Quick Adjustable Locks https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086R8FM6Q/
I've got two different pairs of cascade brand poles and haven't had any issues yet and I've asked a lot from them.
They have little expandable shell/hanger things you put inside to hold the bladder open while drying - they come in cleaning kits (example: InnerFit Hydration Bladder Cleaning Kit - 5 in 1 Water Bladder Cleaning Kit for Universal Bladders - 3 Brushes - 1 Collapsible Frame - 1 Carrying Pouch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BJ74DPH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_AE818MFM12VZG457EZVC)
But tbh, I fashioned something similar out of wore hanger and that works just fine, too!
Thanks for the advice! I've heard it's going to start getting cold around that time of the year, so I'll make sure good socks are a thing. I do hope to break them in a little bit by just wearing them around.
As for this leuko tape, is it similar to mole skin? (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082LPPKS8/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_WRW1J9Y09K6E52T5RWSF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)
I have some of this mole skin tape for another reason, but if that's not good enough, I'll definitely grab the leuko tape.
SmartWater bottles are super cheap and pretty much the water bottle people use for backpacking at this point. The 700ml bottles come with a squirt cap that I just love and bring in my shoulder strap pocket on my hikes. I refill the 700ml bottle from a 1L SmartWater bottle.
If you're set on a straw, I bet Amazon has some things available. This looks promising.

Here is one with some cleaning tabs. Prob worth cleaning.
If anything you can buy just a new bladder as well. Use the same pack
I know this question was specifically about socks, but I was gifted this anti-blister stick and it has really saved me. Especially when wearing sandals.

I own these. They are wool socks. They work great. I can't guarantee that you won't get any blisters but I've been using them for about a year with no blisters. They are cheap and effective. Comes with 6 pairs
I have others, but I've used this for a few years now and it seems to have the best of both words for what you're looking for battery
Amazon! I recently got this shirt and it’s a life saver in the desert heat. Little Donkey Andy Women's UPF 50+ UV Protection Shirt, Long Sleeve Fishing Shirt, Breathable and Fast Dry https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WJ1WQ1C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JG2ADJ0B1QZZ30WEHG2F?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I got some on a sale a few years ago for around $40ish. The name brand is Alpine Summit, but I've seen the exact same pole marketed as different names by a dozen little cottage industry online hiking stores. They are carbon fiber slide adjustable with cork handles. They have been put through the ringer, and are still going strong.
Found a link. Looks like they are around $100 now, but similar ones on the page are around $60 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073NR7HDB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_bQmHp3VZthrJe
Hey there, just a thought, and these are not trail runners....but they aren’t boots either, which is what makes them so intriguing. I have put hundreds of miles on with these (guy version) in everything from dry dusty to standing (and running) 4” water.....and they are fantastic. This is primarily day hikes with a very well loaded hydration pack, and I add it in here only because you mention concerns with water/moisture a couple of times. At any rate, safe travels!
Late to the party, but I have hiked hundreds of miles in these - waterproofing with them is entirely up to you, part of he reason I like them. And it sounds like they are from your neck of the woods...sort of.

Just adding that another option may be the Camelbak MULE - I have owned one of these for over 20 years (mine looks quite different than the link, but happy to post pics of it if needed), and find it incredibly useful, yet light and ‘unbulky.’. Again, this is a fast, light daypack, in no way meant for thru hiking.

No reason you can’t have the best of both worlds. I carry an Optimus Sparky piezo lighter and a Bic mini lighter, and they both fit into a Toaks 750ml titanium mug with lid. I put my fuel stand, fuel canister, stove, piezo lighter, and Bic lighter in the Toaks, and it makes for a very light, easily packed package.
i bought a pair of columbia hiking boots on amazon not long ago. i’ve only worn them like 4-5 times so far but they’ve been incredibly comfortable. they also have great reviews. just haven’t had the chance to use them a ton yet.

Saloman are the besttttt. BUT, this time I went for se Columbia's bc of finances. My local dicks price matched amazon. They are SO comfortable. I've been hiking all over amicalola Georgia and I have zero complaints! Columbia boots in elk color
Genius! Thanks. I just ordered this one -- similar but has the vertical or horizontal straps and a little zipper pouch for other small things.
