There is a "your desktop in vr" app for rift but I haven't seen anything for cardboard. I'm looking for one that works with Mac but I think it's a lost cause for now. http://store.steampowered.com/app/382110/

I have this pansonite headset and it works great with my iPhone 7 but I think it works with the 7+ as well (just make sure you have a headphone-charger adapter)

I understand about the SteelSeries; I can live with the drawbacks. For what I can find it's the only one small enough that carrying it around won't be too ridiculous. My interest here is relatively casual.
