have you tried these? goody spin pins these were magic for me.
they helped secure my bun to my head so there was minimal tugging on my scalp. maybe you can do two space buns and use a couple sets of hair screws to get them securely in place.
and i agree, your hair is beautiful, but always feel free to cut it and experiment with it. i received a lot of praise for my long hair, but it just wasn’t me. i felt like i was in drag and forced to wear it to be acceptable to others.
now, 8 years later, i’m wearing my dream hair style, and i finally feel closer to my true, inner self. self-expression >>> other ppl’s opinions!

I swear by these and I’m on my second bottle. The pills are very small too, in case you have a hard time swallowing them!
Thank you! The ends are definitely a little in need of a trim but I would say that the healthy is mainly due to the fact that I do not dye my hair at all. I use alba botanica shampoo and conditioner in the gardenia option:

It's what this video features. And honestly, I find a single bun stick to be comfortable for those particular styles because they take the hair in so many places. But when my hair was bra strap length and I did a French twist, one stick would dig into my head but two wouldn't.
My favorite bun sticks are these: RC ROCHE ORNAMENT 12 Pcs Womens... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HMGLCX4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
This satin one is my favorite, as it is a bit larger than the silk one. Plus an added bonus is the very wide band, as it can be a very gentle sleep mask as well. (I do wish I could find actual, natural silk large enough to accommodate my hair this well)

For sleep specifically I use a bonnet like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VYJKPQ3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_YMBBFMF2ZBMW6ACJ8TRP?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I can leave it down and loose. Or in 1 or 2 braids. When I leave it loose. I normally twist it up a bit into kind a bun then throw it in then put it on. It's hard to put loose hair in the bonnet otherwise.
For dealing with it being down. I have alot of hair too and I can't deal with it all down at once usually. If I want to show it off I'll usually do a half up style. A half bun or some viking style braid to keep most of it out of my face.
For the frizz a leave in conditioner for use on dry hair might help. Or use a drop or 2 of jojoba oil and it will help a bit with the frizz.

You might want to check if you have too much protein in your products. Protein overload causes hair to be very brittle.
Side slide clips like these are very gentle and can hold a bun all day fairly comfortably. My hair is so thick I use to of the second linked ones to hold up my bun. A braided bun with 2 of those (one on each side) is super comfy cuz of the shape of the clip it doesn't give the pressure point of a standard claw clip. This the same brad as those linked has some pretty awesome claw clips too.

I find the satin ones rather than the velvet tend to look a bit more sleek, so I wear those to my day job. But, the atmosphere is more casual than, say, a bank, so I’m not sure if that will be good enough for you. I got this pack from Amazon about a year ago and wear one of them daily! If you want to forego the scrunchie completely though, wooden hair sticks are very in right now :)
I keep mine in two braids all day, which helps it from tangling too badly. I brush it dry before the shower and then finger comb it again once I'm showering.
Also I swear I'm not trying to plug any products but this brush has helped with the tangling immensely, I don't know why (it's so much less painful than my previous brushes)

This is the one I use. You can see some pics of my head in the reviews, haha
i found it on amazon a few years ago when i had much shorter hair and was doing a kiki’s delivery service cosplay :) i’ll see if i can find a link for it. edit: i’m not sure if i found the exact bow i bought but this one seems very similar!
I use an Alaska Bear Silk Pillowcase from Amazon (Ivory natural undyed white if you want to avoid a potential reaction to dyes as I initially had with a red one) which is good for both hair and skin. I also use a Dreadsock (sleeping cap) to protect my hair. I try to remember to braid my hair before I put it in the Dreadsock but don't always remember or feel like it. I place the Dreadsock with my hair up and over my head for comfort while sleeping.
get a boar brush! they make it easier to brush your hair and they redistribute oils from your scalp to the rest of your hair, making it (in my experience) less frizzy and more shiny. this is the one i use. also, your hair is probably wavy/curly and that’s why it’s frizzy. i had NO idea my hair had any wave to it until i tried a curly hair routine on a whim, NOT expecting it to work in the SLIGHTEST. my hair is stick straight when i blow dry it and only has a couple small bumps when i air dry, but i get pretty significant waves when i use gel or mousse. i followed these directions to test it the first time (a tub of gel is like $3) and then when it worked i got a curl defining shampoo and conditioner and some mousse. i’m still figuring out what works best, but my hair is already much happier!
BESTOOL Hair Brush, Boar Bristle... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072KJSK8X?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
this is the one i have! not too expensive and works AMAZINGLY. don’t know how i went without one for so long. the one i linked is really good because it has longer bristles with the boar bristles so it does an awesome job feta going.
I like the Wet Shower brush! I find it detangles really well and I don’t worry that anything gets into the base of the bristles! I am not as responsible about cleaning my hair brushes as you! Which is why I like the baseless ones, like this.
Keep it tight at every step. Grab it tight, twist it tight, never let go into until the end. For a basic coil, anchor with a little hair on the head, drive through the bun, and anchor again on the other side.
>(I think they are 3 inches and 4 inches)
These bun sticks are over 7". That length is necessary for a lazy wrap bun and Natilus, in my experience.
I use Prose shampoo and conditioner. Comb every day with a wide tooth raw wood comb from Tek. And these are the bonnets I use:

Learn to do this with these. If one stick is uncomfortable, cross it with a second to better distribute the weight of the bun.
Your post history suggests you have a newborn and no time to wash your hair. Bun sticks can hide these facts with surprisingly little effort. Not only will learning new buns make your current length feel more versatile, but it will also protect your hair as it grows out. Especially once baby starts grabbing anything in reach.

My aunt has twice your density just looking and we found these. The only thing is the gold one tarnished so fast and so disgustingly. The gunmetal one seems fine so far though. They also won't break your hair like the band will. Just be cautious the teeth are sharp
Vitamin Keratin Hair Mask for damaged and colored hair has the natural goodness of castor oil and biotin protein, which penetrates deep into the hair shaft to moisturize and strengthen hair while preventing breakage.
They’re spiral Bobby pins that you twist in to your bun into the hair on the base of you’re head! I like the long ones in the two pack and I find they’re much more secure!
I have had luck with L’Oréal Elvive and if you can splurge, It’s a 10 Silk (just be warned if you don’t care for strong fragrance.
I had butt length hair when I joined the gym. I'd twist it in to a high bun and then use 2 or 3 of these metal claw clips at the same time to keep it secure. They are surprisingly strong and I found much less damage using them too.
I use this and it's PERFECT! Only $12 but really good quality and sturdy because I've had it for 2-3 years now, dropped it countless times and it's completely fine still lol.

Purple Hair Mask is an organic and nourishing hair mask for removing excessive yellowing from blonde hair. Blonde hair looks nice but has too many yellow and drab tones that no one really likes. Vitamins Keratin Purple Hair Mask adds shine to the hair and makes the hair color look gorgeous. So yes hair mask is helpful.
Regarding your problem using a blow dryer and brush at the same time, maybe try the revlon blow drying brush. https://www.amazon.com/Revlon-One-Step-Dryer-Volumizer-Brush/dp/B01LSUQSB0 It’ll obviously still cause damage, but far less than straighteners and curling irons.
Do you use any oils or heavy silicones? Salt spray is amazing if you want volume!
Loreal Matt and Messy salt spray is my holy grail. I've been using it for years! It gives me that surfer volume if you get me
https://www.amazon.com/LOr%C3%A9al-Paris-Studio-Messy-Spray/dp/B0093IAJ88
You can use it on the go too. Just spray it in and give your hair a good floof with your hands
Though her hair is shorter than yours, it's also thinner, so it might have the same length to width ratio, and therefore the same amount of coils in a bun.
>I'm not sure a pencil will fit completely through,
These will, and they're fairly sturdy too.
Yes!
I only wash my hair once a week and when it’s 80% air dried I use the Revlon One Step hair dryer brush. Here are the products I use:
The most important thing is to sleep in a protective style though! I sleep in this satin bonnet from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Bonnet-Queen-bonnet-Sleeping-stretchy/dp/B08WLLHPLM
or I just do two side braids.
Also only use scrunchies and don’t let your loose hair rub against anything (like when you’re driving or sitting on the couch keep your hair in front of you to minimize friction damage). In general I’m just extremely gentle with my hair.
Hands down Tangle Teezer Wet Detangler, I use solely this for years already. https://www.amazon.de/Tangle-Teezer-Detangler-praktischer-Tragegriff/dp/B07J36RGDK/ref=asc_df_B07J36RGDK/?tag=googshopde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=354578424687&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7042127892339918031&hvpone=&hvptwo=&...
But if your hair is really dry, you might want to try deep conditioner to help that.
I just ordered an organizer like that for five bucks from SheIn. It's cute and pink but otherwise plain.
>do the plastic sticks ever break?
Most of the plastic sticks in the picture are these, and they're pretty solid. There are also some smaller plastic sticks from SheIn, and those do have a little bend in them, so I'll use them for some buns but not a lazy wrap where I'm really forcing it through some tightness.
What about something like this?
That way they stay standing up so you don’t have to sort through them to find the one you want and you can identify them through their top or colour? You can also put them in sort of Willy nilly if you’re a rush.
I would suggest checking out knitting needle/crochet hook organizers, like this! They're pretty simple to make, and there are lots of free patterns available, if you're a crafty type, too.
I used all kinds of expensive hair treatments for thinning hair and the one thing thats worked wonders for me is Amla Oil. I got mine on amazon I rub it into my scalp in the morning and wash/condition my hair in the evening and it has made my hair feel so much thicker and healthier after a month or two!
Try swim goggles with fabric band instead of the plastic/rubber ones that get easily caught in hair, these SPLASH ones were a game changer for me.
I have the sort of tub stopper that's built into the tub. The kind where you just push it down and it sticks down, and then you stomp on it again to pop it back up. So I couldn't use the mesh kind that fit into the drain. But I found an awesome one that's shaped like a dome and has small holes in it.
Like this:
https://www.amazon.com/LEKEYE-Catcher-Strainer-Stainless-Protector-Silver/dp/B07SG474HG
This isn't my exact one, but it's like this and it works really well for my long hair.
We have one like this right now and it catches a fair bit of hair but we still have to clean the drain every few months.
The brush I use is here And I usually just use whatever all-purpose or rat tail comb I can find.
Like everyone said, there is always an awkward growing phase, but it will pass. For now, check out alice bands for men. Here is an example of what I mean, but I've never bought these specifically so I don't vouch for them:
Also check out regular hairbands, you can get them at most shops and they come in neutral colours.
I think it looks nice pulled back, and the messy style with it in your face is also nice.
Happy growing!
I have been using this one for the last 5 or so years. I initially started taking it to protect my joints as I aged, not necessarily for my hair so I can't say definitively at what point I noticed the improvement. My hairstylist just always comments on how healthy it is, and how quickly it grows. I also noticed that I don't lose as much hair in the shower and in my brushes.
Collagen has also done wonders for my skin and nails.
This may sound weird but use dollar tree headbands. I got a pack of them they were like those clothes hair ties like these. They didn't fit on my head but they were wonderful as hairties. And they come in like a three pack. Hope that helps
A lot of the under $10 bun sticks on Etsy are actually the same manufactured ones you could buy for $2 from Chinese ebay sellers or for that price in a multi-pack on Amazon. I think this is a good starter set. Basic, inexpensive, durable, and easy to work with.
Thank you! 😀My shirt is from Walmart, I bought it in person. I tried to find a link for it online but couldn't find one. My pants are from Amazon
Thus seller also has a cute butterfly one also. Here is the one I have

I have this heat protector, but I haven't been using it long. I just got bangs a few weeks ago so I don't really know how well it works for protection.
I did try the bumble and bumble heat protection with silicones and unlike most people, my hair really seems to hate them, sulfates no issues... But doesn't like silicone.
The oils will have a natural protection against heat and mechanical damage. Oil makes your hair slippery like silicones and does create a film around the hair strands. It just depends on which oil you use to get a high enough heat tolerance to be considered protection.
Like argon oil by itself has a smoke point of 420 degrees Fahrenheit. So if your hot tool is below that you shouldn't be burning it off.
This! Before I leave the shower I spray Cantu Care for Kids Conditioning Detangler and then brush it through, gently, with a Tangle Teezer brush. Sometimes in the morning on a non-wash day, I use the same detangle process and it helps a lot!
A night cap would work better. Pillowcase only does so much with the ends. If you look at a cap they have some for braids like this one. That are nice because you can just do a braid and toss it in. And you don't need to do a bun or something. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VYJKPQ3/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_185YSPZFXSNAQNK81Z38?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
My hair is past tailbone and I've been using this style cap for the last few years. I've tried the pillowcase and it does more for your face than your hair.
Learn to do these multi-coiled stick buns. While they can be held up by a single stick as demonstrated, I prefer to cross it with a second stick to more comfortably distribute the weight. If you don't have any bun sticks, here is a good starter set: inexpensive, decent quality, and available in smooth plain colors that might compliment your Lululemon obsession.

For a simple yet elegant French twist, do the third style in this video with these bun sticks. The video shows it with a single stick, but I suggest crossing it with a second one afterward to more comfortably distribute the weight.
Not the person you're replying to but Aussie Miracle Moist Intense Hydration Oil has been great to me: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R23HXSN/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_25F48VDQF9H4B9GY1K9E
It's a little hard to find in my area, but usually cheaper in stores ($3-$4/bottle) than on Amazon.
I have the same problem, lol. But a long hair fork like this seems to secure it better than what I used in the photo. It's basically two parallel sticks.
Don't sharpen them too much or you might scratch your scalp; used but dull is ideal. Or you can cheap out on bun sticks like these. The video in my first comment may show one bun stick keeping up the bun, but you may want to cross it with a second afterward to better distribute the weight, depending on how it feels.

This was a game changer
These clips aren't super cute but they hold really well.
But your hair might be long enough for hairsticks which are way better for quick easy buns without a claw getting stuck/breaking teeth.
This is a playlist of different hairsticks bun options. You might be able to get a nautilus bun to hold without a stick since it sounds like you have some curls.

Yes! But there is an art to it and you may experience a learning curve. It doesn't help that long hair is uncommon in the real world, so we have to learn this stuff online instead of at our mothers' knees. Look for bun tutorials by women whose hair is similar to yours, especially in length and texture.
It's hard to find bun sticks in a shop, but I've found pretty good and inexpensive sets of them on Amazon. If you're just starting out, a cheap multi-pack of that and/or hair forks gives you the ability to experiment without risking much money.
Messy bun? You mean the thing that looks like you started a ponytail but forgot to finish it? Goodness no, those suck, even on shorter hair. I object to them on principle as a matter of self-respect.
To reduce this error in the world, I hope you buy a dozen bun sticks, give a couple to anyone who suggested a messy bun, and forward them this video of simpler buns for ponytail length hair. That video uses a single stick, but I suggest crossing it with a second one afterward to more comfortably distribute the weight of the bun.
I have really fine, medium-thick hair shampooed every day (it'd still get oily by midday RIP.) The #1 game changer was using sulfate-free shampoos (I use this one and it def helped the oiliness) and slowly transitioned to longer periods without washing. I can now go ~6-10 days between washes. Dry shampoo/French braids/bandanas definitely help conceal any oiliness and boar bristle brushes will help transfer natural oils throughout your hair, rather than staying at your roots. I also find that when I wear my hair in a bun for a few days, my scalp gets way greasier (maybe because the oils can't travel down the strands?)
I usually tie my hair up when showering and really only rinse my hair if it's looking flat. If I have a function where I want my hair to look clean but feel as though it's too soon to shampoo, I'll scrub my hair with water as if I'm shampooing and then follow with a 5-minute ACV rinse, then condition (and only ever condition from below the ears and downwards.) I'm now able to use light leave-ins and oils on my lengths!
IIRC, scalp exfoliation is supposed to help oil production. I know some people swear by the scalp scrubbers (I like them because it feels good lol) and the Inkey List has a salicylic acid treatment that claims it's good for minimizing excess oil.
Try doing these simple buns with these light flat plastic chopsticks. Though these buns are all shown with a single stick, I suggest crossing them with a second to distribute the weight and add anchoring.
I’m you’re looking for hair growth I definitely recommend the “sport research biotin vitamins” , they have worked really good for me you can buy them in amazon Amazon
There are little brightly colored bands that work well for fine hair. Plus they're cheap for a whole bunch, so it's ok if they get lost.
Not the person you asked but here is what I use. It has really good reviews and is organic. Organic Castor Oil (16oz Glass Bottle) USDA Certified Organic, 100% Pure, Cold Pressed, Hexane Free. Boost Hair Growth for Hair, Eyelashes & Eyebrows. Natural Dry Skin Moisturizer by RejuveNaturals https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XBJLJH5/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_VK3VDP5SCP0FSVFP5336?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You shouldn't use it in your hair too often, maybe once a week or once every other week and I recommend diluting it with jojoba oil or something similar since it's really thick. It's also fantastic for your skin and actually prevents acne. I use a drop in my moisturizer a lot of the time. Argan oil as well.
Aw I’m a climber too!! I have really thin, fine, long hair and I love these silky hair ties from Amazon :
9 Pieces Silk Hair Ties Silk Hair Scrunchies Skinny Silk Scrunchies Pure Silk Ponytail Holder Silk Hair Accessories for Women Girls (Bright Colors,Elegant Style) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T1GHFX9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_gl_i_MNQEABT79A4AYKGG2AQT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
This is the one I have. It’s got more room for longer hair, and the top is adjustable. Sometimes I skip the bonnet and go straight to a durag. It ties up tight and is less likely to slip. SAYMRE Satin Bonnet Silky Sleep Cap,Adjustable Hair Bonnet for Braids Curly Hair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B098HZT15L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JNPSADBYSFNHX08TA8SC
I have bra strap length also medium thick hair, I use this. I bought one to try and it worked so well I got two more. The tie in the back makes it adjustable so it's not too tight or too loose. I was worried the knot would cause discomfort but I don't notice it at all. Really happy with the quality and durability. I wear it every night. My end have gotten a lot less dry, and it's easier to refresh hair in the mornings.
You don't like rubber bands, but have you tried Scunci silicone bands? I use them on my thin/fine hair ponytail every day.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Scunci-No-slip-Evolution-Ponytailers-14-Count/dp/B003DKU3CY
When my hair was like that, I'd wear one of these as a foulard (illustrated in the bottom of one of that listing's images) at the gym.
Well, the above link is the longest hair fork I could find on Amazon, a good inch and a half longer than the others. But maybe your bun needs two forks. In which case, I'd suggest you buy this set instead since it has a pair of each color.
As for technique, this video suggests hair fork buns specifically for long hair. It sounds like your length is beyond a simple coil and should be in some multi-loop arrangement instead, as shown here.
These are really similar to the ones I have! Not sure if you were looking at a specific color in the etsy listing, but I bought mine here from amazon at $10 for ten of them instead of $8.50 for only one. They're nice, but a little flimsy and prone to break easily.
I bought a basic one on AmazonAmazon and as long as I put my hair in a bun or just somehow on top of my head it stays on perfectly, if I braid my hair the bonnet always falls off
I just bought this one from Amazon which was honestly huge on my head. I put in one stitch so that it’s tight on my head (it has a strip of elastic on the back so I can still get it on and off fine) and it’s been great. I also flip around a lot and have insomnia so I was worried about the same thing.
I use a keratin hair mask and it works amazing. you can get it here. My only downside that I have found to this is that my hair is addicted to it and if I use a different hair mask, my hair is like “what the fuck is this” and there is an immediate difference. I had to essentially wean my hair off of the mask lol.
The easiest way is probably to buy a protein heavy shampoo.
I don't have curly hair, so someone else might have a better shampoo/hair mask recommendation.
Thank you, I use 2 of these type of hair clips.
https://www.amazon.com/minihope-Girls%60s-Classics-Pulling-Material/dp/B08CSBH22C/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?keywords=hair+clips&qid=1647700860&sr=8-13 It’s hard to explain but I clip them sort of on the sides of a high bun.
You can always try a wooden comb. I find them to be the most gentle but also a slow method. If you use it with coconut oil or hyaluronic acid it could help. When my tangles get bad I rotate between a medium toothed smooth plastic comb, my wooden comb, and my tangle teeter. I use spritz with rose water since I’m avoiding chemicals but It’s a Ten has great detangler did you want a conventional product. https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Organic-Neem-Wood-Brown/dp/B07Q5JLKLP/ref=sxin_19_pa_sp_phone_search_thematic_sspa?crid=2CGUMLBHJ9OZW&cv_ct_cx=wooden+comb&keywords=wooden+comb&pd_rd_i=B07Q5JLKLP&pd_rd_r=b959d8ba-d3a5-480e-902a-04ec0c...
You will not regret it! I was braiding my hair every night and now I just twist it on top of my head and don’t need a hair tie or anything after I put the cap on.
This is the one I bought, I waited for one of the colors to go on sale and got it for like 6.99 USD or something like that.
I’ve started sleeping with a hair bonnet (this one and I love how it looks when I wake up. I gently twist it into a bun and throw the cap on. If it’s looking dry I’ll add some Moroccan hair oil to the ends beforehand. I’ll admit sleeping with it is a little annoying and takes getting used to, but I’m finding almost 0 split ends since using it.
I use a basic one I found on amazon, this one specifically.
This happens to me too and I just bought banana clips that seem to do the trick. A little retro but my hair is giant and curly so the clips are mostly hidden. This is the kind I use.b They have smaller and larger ones but these are “medium” and work for my hair to prevent matting. They also don’t give me headaches because the weight stays in the back instead of on top of my head.
If anyone is looking for a cheaper alternative that is still a great boar bristle brush, I've been using this brush for about a year now.
I was looking into a Mason Pearson for a while, but a friend told me that this brush was as close to a Mason Pearson that they had found while being a fraction of the price. I decided to try it and it's amazing. It has nylon bristles, which I didn't like at first, but they really help the boar bristles get all the way down to the scalp, which was something I struggled with, with other boar bristle brushes.
It's 35$ for the medium sized one I got, but comes in other sizes. Obviously there will be a difference given the price difference, but it is a solid wood brush, seems to be made extremely well, and it's super easy to clean unlike some of the other ones I have tried.

My gf has long, thick hair to her bum and she uses these 6 inch hair clips made by Deeka! They’re great clips and can hold a LOT of hair :)

Henna or Cassia makes the hair thicker, shinier and more resilient.
The smell is more plant or herbal based - not sweet or perfumey.
They do have a light brown color with the brand I use - however that being said I do not know if it will work for your hair type. I use Bio Organics and buy it on Amazon.

I use Dr. Bronner's lavender soap as shampoo because it's a pretty mild soap and smells nice. There was a period where my hair got dry and tangly when I started a job as a gardener. I think being outside all the time in the sun and overwashing because I was so sweaty after work.
Now I shampoo once a week and condition as usual with Dove, then when my hair is almost dry I put like a pump of argan oil from the ends up to about my shoulder. Between washes I use a boar hair brush to clean it and distribute oils 2-3x a week.
I think the big helper was the argan oil. I saw an instant difference when I started using it. I use it after a wash and about midweek between washes.
Finally, I'm trying not to trim my hair but every year or two until I reach my goal (classic length) and I've been doing the SAD method with a very sharp pair of hair shears.
Then you may have too much hair for my previous comment. Instead, consider a Nautilus bun with a pair of bun sticks. Or if you decide to use a hair fork, get a long strong one like this.
