These are the books
The Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is a fantastic book. A very short book that's easy to relate to even today. I'd definitely recommend it.
The Book of Five Rings is a bit hard to get into and I've never understood its appeal. So I wouldn't recommend it.
Not sure if you're looking for advice regarding exercise: start small, build the foundation daily over a few weeks and then set higher goals:
Next month
On the mental side, try and realize that you're doing this for yourself, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks when they see you exercising. IMO it should be a personal journey rather than 'I guess this is what people do', or, 'I want to look good for others'. You know, health, and stuff.
Edit: Throw in some accountability w/ 7 Weeks Habit / Goal Tracking App
This is just a sloppy rehash of Jocko's (very good, unlike this tripe) "Discipline Equals Freedom"
Anyone reading this, ignore this clown and just go read Jocko's book and listen to the podcast.
Much as I appreciate this, you're reposting it from Librivox. I feel as though it would be appropriate to show them some love on your page. https://librivox.org/the-art-of-war-by-sun-tzu/
I'll also point out your YouTube channel is "Audible Books." That may earn you some unwanted attention from the company Audible.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that we've launched Nurture if you'd like to give it a try :)

marco polo has helped me keep in better touch with my people too - it's asynchronous video chat. you leave a video message - they respond with one when they have time. it highlights how difficult regular live phone calls are when you see all the marco polo vids you're able to leave for eachother.

Some reading material:
Marx, The Communist Manifesto; Lock, Second Treatise; J. S Mill, On Liberty; Rousseau; Heilbroner, The Worldly Philosophers; Noam Chomsky; Ilan Pappe
Thats all i can think of off the top of my head.
Also, some of those words are really sort if buzzwords and labels (SJW, alt right/left, conservative, progressive, etc.) of which the definition will change drastically depending on who you ask
That concept of you having the ultimate freedom to mediate between stimulus and response is actually drawn (as Covey points out) from Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, which is based on his time in the Nazi concentration camps during WWII.
Good video. I have the book, The Power of Habit, and it's on my reading list for this year. I may have to substitute my current book so I can start reading this one, as it may help me build the habits that I want to have.
I'm just reading all these supportive posts and its a great feeling. People are so GOOD to each other! OP has some real worries and he shares them and complete strangers put in real effort to give good advice to help OP get what he's after. The world is a wonderful place, OP, an the Reddit community is your proof. You could be a writer OP. You wrote a book already in this post. My advice is to stop taking life so seriously. Read Think and Grow Rich, and pick ONE GOAL for now. Maybe the job goal. Once you're successful you will attract more women. Don't seek women as a sport. Make being happy as your number one goal. Take a chance on life, on humanity, and maybe apply to another Japanese job and this time don't cancel. The suicide rate in Japan is apparently pretty high due to various pressures and stresses. It might help put things in perspective for you... Perhaps you'll even realize you're a LuCKY guy. Whether you think you're lucky or unlucky, you're right. Your mind is the filter for your whole life. Elevate your mind and you will elevate your life.
I randomly picked up some self improvement books from the library the other day, and one is titled Too Fast to Think by Chris Lewis. It's more about creativity and finding balance between the left and right sides of the brain (the brain and the left/right theory are discussed at length).
I tend to be highly analytical as well, and at some points it's just downright tiring.
The Memory Book has the best system I have run across for training your memory.
There is some incredibly valuable information in this book. http://www.amazon.com/Lights-Out-Sleep-Sugar-Survival/dp/0671038680/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1421056643&sr=8-2&keywords=Lights+Out+book
