> I no longer feel like MetaFilter is a place that cares about what I care about, and in fact it often began to seem outright hostile.
You aren't imagining that, either. That's why a lot of us are here, because we see that hostility being accepted as long as it is directed towards the 'wrong' kinds of people. For example, this new post has the WORST framing (deliberately demeaning, provocative title), and has clearly just been put up as an excuse to point and laugh. But not only did it not get deleted, it was posted by a moderator.
I was surprised to see Mayor Curley go. Member since 2002, nearly 5000 comments on the Blue alone, favorited over 13000 times. When you lose people like that, you're losing the community. I wish there was a list of all the members who have disabled their accounts and left the site in recent years, just to get a better sense of what Mefi has lost.
Terrible story and totally unsurprising that MeFi would delete it.
MeFi currently has a "look at this awful thing" post where the awful thing has already been discussed at length and wasn't even real to start with.
Maybe it is just me but it seems sketchy as fuck for a mod to be making a post which is just an excuse to point and laugh and talk shit about men reading
> My experiences with reddit these days primarily are in the forms of r/circlebroke, r/circlebroke2, r/ShitRedditSays, and a bunch of specific interest subs. [src]
Look at my super surprised face.
Well you should have made a post about white "fascist" nerd trump supporters (which is obviously not connected to politics or the election in any way).
Then it might have been allowed to stay up by the impartial and always politically neutral moderators.
Looking back at some of my favorite moments from Metafilter election coverage. I like the total and complete derail that occurred when I used the phrase "Clinton Machine" in a comment predicting the VP would be a Clinton loyalist.
It's just amazing. The immediate accusation of sexism, of course. The total head in sand denial that the Clintons operate as a machine...does anybody doubt that at this point? The comment about the DNC being a machine is hilarious in retrospect. Yes, it's THEIR machine!
My comment here is relevent to our current fucked circumstances I think. Really needed more of that respecting and understanding people even if their ideas are toxic this election season.
Oh so many comments where I smugly assure everybody Clinton had no chance to lose. Oops.
This is no surprise. The female imperative rules at MetaFilter. Recently, we had drooling over Joe Kennedy at the DNC convention with the likes of, "But damn, Joe Kennedy, HMU" (thread archive). The same thing with the cooing over Chris Hemsworth and Kate McKinnon in the Ghostbusters FanFare.
And yet, the site crows how putting an end to, "I'd hit it" was a victory for great justice. No, it is quite acceptable for the women of MetaFilter to express what they would "hit". This is because female sexuality is noble and beautiful while male sexuality is base and predatory.
I posted the topic because it is a discussion about having discussions. And within that discussion, there is another discussion, adding yet another layer. It doesn't get much more meta than that. Moreover, in one of those discussions about free speech there is censorship, or removal, of speech. Political speech and speech about ideals is traditionally one the highest forms of speech that there is, and our society has gone to great lengths to protect it. While MeFi is clearly not the United States and is not constitutionally required to allow free speech, it is my experience that it has been a place that welcomed all respectfully presented opinions.
Second, the site has been a great resource and place of entertainment for me for years, and I’m just “concerned” at where things are headed. It’s true – it can’t always be smart informative posts with smart informative comments. But, honestly, what is the noise ratio these days and what did it used to be? Time and again, we see “concern” expressed about groups not feeling welcomed at MeFi. Last week, it was southerners. But what about a robust discussion around a variety of topics and the people who enjoy that – is that still welcomed?
To be blunter, we can all pat ourselves on the back at recognizing the importance of identity politics or any other topic, but if it overwhelms and cannibalizes the rest of the content, it is a voice that is going to eventually be ignored because people will simply not visit the site as much anymore.
any of the naysayers ready to temper their comments about the demise of the once great and wonderful metafilter? no? crazy.
I am. There's some good meta-analysis of people's approach to the story (particularly this comment.) If this sort of thing is a trend, I'm impressed and happy.
I couldn't help but compare this thread, and the "Eww, that's gross," reaction to Men's Only book clubs (which are small, purely opt-in groups organized by individuals) to this post. Not only are Mefites wholeheartedly in support of reading only books written by women (so much for opening up your worldview to other perspectives!), they are supporting a movement to STOP PUBLISHING ANY BOOKS WRITTEN BY MEN FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR, so no one else can read them, either.
onlyconnect, too, driven away after an appeal for compromise. Her husband, NortonDC, was accused of doxxing her after posting in the thread; he reproduced his comment on his profile page. I've stopped going there for substantive discussion, just links and the occasional comment--just like reddit!
Hi, not_a_doctor. I was about to direct you to the MetaTalk thread on the redesign until I realized you won't be able to load it! X(
Best thing to do would be to load up the site on your phone, skip to the very bottom of the screen, and click the Contact link. You'll be able to send a message to the site staff, including the programmer pb. Make sure to include your email address and relevant technical details. Somebody from the site should contact you back by email fairly soon and will try to help you diagnose the problem from there.
Good luck!
See the last three months in Alexa, for example. I've been watching the numbers there now for a couple of years and there have been no major upticks that I can recall.
Now here's an interesting thing: the second largest country for visitors on mefi following the old USA is India. Why not grow that market? Why not pick an Indian mod? There are a few members there come to mind that might be excellent fits.
Well, the BlueApron thread has demonstrated that the old, nasty MeFi is alive and well. You just have to pick the right subject.
One of the reasons why I quit the site was because despite how smart everyone there thinks they are, posts about anything other than video games, depression and emotional labor are just worthless. What insights would the average MeFite have about Cologne? It's just brain-numbingly stupid.

>I'm sure most of us know by now that when a MetaTalk thread starts with an innocuous, "How can we do this better", it's code for "let's take some people down".
> Is anyone else sick of "easter queen"? She's pretty adept at imitating the NoraReed/poffin boffin/elizardbits style of commenting, i.e. "be the biggest, most uncharitable jerk you can and then cry tone argument when you get pushback".
I'm not really seeing that in this thread: no shoot first style, no callous disregard for others, but in some places actually pretty thoughtful and introspective:
Take this comment:
> Personally, I think this discussion is a great read for me, as a woman, after the emotional labor thread. The EL thread made me (rightfully!) angry about the time and energy I have wasted and the healing I have sacrificed for others who couldn't repay the favor. But coming in to this thread and reading stories from men has reminded me that we're all in this together, and most of the things I'm angry at have caused suffering in the men I know as well. It has really made me think about how to model behavior for a future generation and it has curtailed a lot of my anger, and I think it will make me more thoughtful in relating to the men in my life.
MetaFilter is one of the smartest places on the Internet. Where else could you find someone suggesting a boycott of 4chan?
Wow, that takes me back. Oh, the halcyon days when the img tag still worked! Here's my first post under my old username. I can't believe how different the posting culture used to be - that framing would get me deleted in a heartbeat today, I think. Possibly with good reason.
