This is likely a cellulose based material. There were some asbestos containing insulations that have similar characteristics in terms of color and texture. Mr. Fluffy insulation which was widely used in attics in Australia has similar characteristics. The presence of asbestos cannot be determined unless a small sample is put under a microscope. NO, smell cannot determine asbestos either.
