I feel your pain. I hate Scrabble Go. However, I just installed Crosswords, which was just mentioned here, I believe. NO FRILLS AT ALL. It's perfect for me... Unfortunately, my wife says it's too visually jarring (WTH?). It's a bit hard to find. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.eehouse.android.xw4[Link](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.eehouse.android.xw4)
I... I just have no idea what's going on. There's a lot of text (I believe most of it is just lore) that I'm already turned off by.
One of my favorite parts about Scrabble is that your play changes from the start of the game when compared to the last few words. That doesn't seem to be the case here as you have a fresh board every time. That plus I was really waiting to see the "scrabble" aspect of being able to hook your word against the opponents but I don't see that in this demo
On the dungeon crawler front, there doesn't seem to be any progression, just screen after screen "in a dungeon setting". I don't see any character mechanics, or weapons or tools. "Dungeon background" does not equate to "dungeon crawler"
From what I've seen on this demo video, I am reminded of WordScapes and The Typing of the Dead: Overkill, and that your game is some sort of cross between the two.
The graphics are alright, and the sound effects are pretty standard for mobile games. Sadly, this isn't for me. Not sure if everybody here would agree, though. Best of luck to ya
Well, this is the dictionary we've agreed to for our games.
UR = expressing hesitation
ZO = a cross between a yak and a cow
ISO = film replay facilities
TWANE = oh wtf I should have challenged this. And before you point it out I noticed "DEO" only after it was too late. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In CSW19 (Collins) its allowable. CSW19 is current version of SOWPODS list of bygone era.
If you are android user , then keep this app on mobile. Select word list that you play with... Enjoy.
I've never played with this set - but I have the set with the turntable board. A really nice feature of it is that there are raised edges on the board that the tiles fit into, so they don't slip around. I've seen this set for outrageous prices on Amazon - we've had ours for ages so I'm not sure if they still sell it. But if you can find it for a reasonable price I would definitely recommend it. https://www.amazon.ca/Hasbro-Scrabble-Deluxe-Turntable-Game/dp/B00000IWH9
>It sounds like you may have played some and already know what you like
I haven't done anything like this with anything but tenzi, which has an add-on deck with each card having a different variant.
My boyfriend is really good at scrabble and puts everyone else to shame which takes the fun out of it, so I thought having variants puts us all on a more even playing field and may make it fun again for all.
[These are the scrolls I ordered](masterchinese 140pcs large 2x2 inches write-on-it valentine message in a bottle paper roll (mini scroll) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YFTKYZ8/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_ZB7R2NRHKQ6E8M955X72?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1), and they were delivered ten minutes ago. I'll add all of your awesome ideas and brainstorm for more while I wait for others to chime in.
Classic Words on Android is your best bet. Gameplay is straight Scrabble, works offline, there's a tiny banner ad at the top of the screen but no sound.
They are available on Amazon (and all good bricks-and-mortar bookshops should have them too): here's the word list.
If you can hold out, there's a new version coming out in January next year.
FTA: "I don't like slang words at all, but if they are going to put them in we will have to use them. I think there is too much slang in the English language as it is, with the way young people are talking."
Ironic, given that "slang" is itself...slang.
> How can I resolve this?
Assuming you're playing face-to-face, just decide which dictionary you're going to use before you start playing.
You can use an online dictionary, the printed Official Scrabble Player’s Dictionary, Sixth Edition, or The Lego Star Wars Visual Dictionary if you want to.
2-letter words first, then there are lots of other things to study: 2-to-3 letter hooks, 3-letter words, short X, J, Q, and Z words, vowel dumps, Q-without-U words, top 6-letter bingo stems, 3-to-4 letter hooks, and so on. They're all pretty useful, so I'm not sure the best order. Maybe a little of each at the same time. I recommend the book Everything Scrabble for more info.
Thanks for the tips! After doing the "reading and writing" thing for about a week now, I was getting the sense that it's not the most efficient way to go about it. Based on common replies, it seems alphagramming/Zyzzyva might be the best way to go.
And thanks for the book rec! I've watched some of Kenji's videos. I actually just got a copy of Everything Scrabble in the mail today, which is my next read, so I'll check out the Handbook after that.
We actually tried that, but it was not in our dictionary. Is FLOX included in different dictionary? Our dictionary lists PHLOX, but not FLOX.
There are lots of Scrabble clones out there which are allowed to exist, but using the official word list or dictionary is asking for trouble.
This app has millions of downloads and is an exact copy of Scrabble including the board design and rules. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lulo.scrabble.classicwords
I have been using Classic Words Plus for many years. There is no playing against other people as it's a standalone game, but I got frustrated playing people who would abandon their games.
Would definitely recommend this one:
Both free and Paid versions. Very clean interface, great features. Supports pass and play for 2 players only though.
Not sure if you can access this link in your country, but https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JMCJGZC/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_9puMEbVT51QFT should be what you're looking for. If you can't access the link, search for "Scrabble Deluxe Edition", "Tile Lock Scrabble", or "Rotating Scrabble Board" on Amazon or eBay. Also try thrift/charity shops.
I tried that app but then realized the official name probably costs a lot of money, which would explain why they'd need to show so many ads. I switched to an app called "Word Master" and found it only shows one full page ad after the game and a small ad at the top of the board.
this is the cheapest board i know of that includes a tile grid: https://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-Gaming-A8769-Scrabble-Edition/dp/B00IFWSO94 (i agree that that's the one must-have feature)
this one is a little more expensive, but from the reviews the build quality is way better: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JMCJGZC/ref=psdc_166225011_t1_B00IFWSO94
I made this app that has score tracking. Just enter the words, select the bonuses by tapping the letters/word bonuses, and add. Score is automatically calculated. There's also a built-in dictionary and thesaurus, and optional word finder (some people view it as cheating, but you don't have to use it): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.ac.aut.ultimatewordfinderr
UPDATE: I've just noticed the definitions aren't working. Will fix this tomorrow. The new update will have a WIP Material Design. I wanted to wait a bit longer until it was more refined, but I need to fix the definitions (regular occurrence, HTML changes slightly regularly). Give me Feedback on the design. Also let me know if you prefer the swipe-out navigation drawer (swipe from the left) or the buttons. You can do all this from within the feedback section of the app. Just tap the menu button to access it (three vertical dots in the top-right)
UPDATE 2: Might take a little longer. Just working on some kinks with the Material Design. Will update again when the update is out. In the meantime, you can still use the current version for scoring, finding words, etc. and the Thesaurus still works.
lately i've been using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.MindSportsInternational.MSICardboxLearnLite as it has a free Word Checker and Alphagram solver built in, using the collins dictionary
I have been using this android app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phyora.apps.word_helper
Is pretty good, or others have mentioned http://www.wineverygame.com/ is a great website, but not sure how well it works on Android.
