I'm not a doctor but I found this information which will be helpful to you.
For anti-depressants it says how it interacts with MAOIs, and with the SSRI medication Luvox/Fluvoxamine. https://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-828-yerba%20mate.aspx?activeingredientid=828&activeingredientname=yerba%20mate
Nice description, thanks! I always wondered why I always see the top mount dry... mine always soak up, but I guess it could be either not pouring enough mate, or a large cup. I have this steel cup which is very comfortable because it's a thermos, and wound't burn my hand or cool the water.
I currently use this unknown herborist's mate which comes €40/Kg (is it much?) but I clearly can't tell if it's good or not since it's my first try, but I'll definitely look Playadito, but also Amanda sonds nice!
I got a Primus Double Wall Press and Go Loose Leaf Iced Tea Brewer Tumbler with Strainer on Amazon. I love it! I put my Yerba in the main, outer tube, add almost boiling water, steep for 15 minutes. Then in the inner tube I put ice and insert this inner tube into the outer tube, where the strained Yerba comes through. Some of the ice melts right away to make enough liquid for you to drink. I am sensitive to caffeine but I love my tereré. Primula Press and Go
The flavor is super different. The flavor also lasts a lot longer. And yes you need a special bombilla (called bomba because the Portuguese language). This is the chima set I use. Bomba works well.
It's so beautiful isn't it?! It's a Kalmateh 500ml from Amazon actually. It's PERFECT and designed for mate. It's so nice because you can pour out water in a very controlled manner and it doesn't end up spilling anywhere on the thermos.
I'd recommend something like this on Amazon. Since it's not an actual gourd you don't have to worry about curing it, or growing mold
I'd say brew it, throw it in a thermos and be done with it, but you're concerned about staining your teeth. I'd guess mate is not going to be as bad about that as black tea or coffee, but in the end, that's your choice.
You could get some sort of a tumbler with a lid and straw like this. At least in the US they're fairly easy to find, and you could pre-brew your mate to chuck it in. It won't work as well as a proper, dedicated coffee cup without a straw that'll keep your brew hot for 8 hours, but if 4-6 is long enough, you'll be good.
Alternatively, if they're available, you could possibly get something like a HydroFlask with a straw lid (I legitimately don't know if these sorts of bottles have any presence in Europe). They come in all sizes, up to 64oz (~2 liters), and you can also find cheap knockoffs that work just as well that'll keep your stuff hot for 6-10 hours. There's considerable risk for burning yourself, so don't suck on it like it's a cold liquid, but it could work.
It's a calabash gourd with some pretty carvings on it. Here's the amazon link showing where I got it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076661N9Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
After doing a little more research I found that a calabash sweating isn't necessarily unusual and is likely OK, but found nothing about the roasty smelling liquid. It smells really nice actually, like pretzels, roasted vegetables or something. Perhaps I'm worried over nothing, but thought I'd check with you guys here.
Thanks for your time man!
I use this thing which is enough for just me filled maybe halfway w dry yerba and fits in my cup holder.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G7QLHZQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Then after I tip and shake and set it back resting at an angle, I carefully poke the top of the yerba montañita back down with a finger... this works especially well in this mate because the sides are metal and while dry it slides fairly easily. End result is that the top level of the yerba is well below the lip of the mate, which makes spilling significantly less likely. Also less likely to blow dry yerba off the top when I'm walking out to my truck in the morning in our 30+mph wind gusts.... :/
You can see someone doing this a little in the video below (and wind is mentioned). I take that poke-down further especially if I'm heading out in my truck to a trailhead in the mountains where I know I'm gonna be bouncing down logging roads for a while. 😁 I usually just keep the thermos between my legs.

I got this one a few years ago and I love it. Good size, nice "non shiny" finish (to avoid using another word that might create confusion) it is pretty minimalist but I do love the finish on it
Aloha! You are welcome Hebrew, er Sibrew. (Cool name.) hot oil strainer fits perfectly atop quart jars ; cut handle off to be 1/2-3/4 inch long ; can do so with angle grinder using thin blade https://www.amazon.com/Hot-Pot-Fat-Skimmer-Spoon/dp/B09QSQ9WQT/ref=sr_1_15?crid=8A06AEY9QNCC&keywords=hot+oil+strainer&qid=1662585984&sprefix=hot+oil+strainer%2Caps%2C914&sr=8-15
I have an Amazon subscription to save some cash. The 180 count is a bit cheaper than 90.
I think most yerba mate has around the same quality. What's makes most of the difference is how you like it. You probably need to try many different brands until you find the one you like most. Some have stronger flavor, some are smoky, some have more dust, but eventually it will depend or your taste.
This is one of the most popular brands in Argentina and it's pretty cheap: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Yerba-Mate-Playadito-500-gm/dp/B006JYGURS/

Cheers!

Hi, are you buying it in the US?
My best choice is always Calabash, I like the shape and the taste. Next best choice is wood for sure, I don't like silicone / glass / plastic mates.
This set looks good: https://www.amazon.com/Balibetov-Handmade-Original-Including-Bombilla/dp/B01CNWZPGQ/ref=sr_1_2_sspa
Feel free to ask any further questions.
Cheers from Argentina!
I have a couple of plastic thermos I specifically use for tereré because I use orange juice thinned down (60% juice / 40% water) for mine. My favorite is very similar to this it is made by the same company.
Occasionally I do add lemon juice and honey to my hot water maté (when I am feeling under the weather). But in that case I am adding about 10ml ~ 1 lemon to 1L of hot water. At that concentration I have never had any issues in a stainless thermo.
For the bombilla, it all depends on what kind of yerba you consume. Those flat bombillas for example won’t work with fine cuts like Uruguayan yerba or “sin palo”, you will need to use them exclusively for Argentine style yerbas that come in coarser cuts and palos. If not, get a spoon bombilla; that kind works with most styles (except Chimarrão).
As for the Thermos to go, I recommend this kind that basically is a thermos + mate cup + bombilla all-in-one. Works perfectly with Argentinean style yerba and particularly good for terere.

Depends on what you want. I might have like 10 and rotate on the same 3. On Amazon you have several e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09BCJX572 (very large) or this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073DWQYVJ (excellent size, use it every day). if you are in London you could go to Phoenician Supermarket in Kentish Town or R. Garcia and Sons in Portobello road. The bombilla get it on Urushop or Amazon, buy different types just in case.
I read it in some other reviews for other mates and figured "what else could it be?" after taking a look at all the ingredients.
For example, if you search for "headache" in the Q&A of this mate, you'll find a review mentioning it: https://www.amazon.com/Rosamonte-Special-Selection-Yerba-Mate/dp/B003IF93TI/ref=sr_1_16?crid=36DVQFQHCAQA3&keywords=yerba+mate&qid=1651705798&sprefix=yerba+mate%2Caps%2C71&sr=8-16
Amazon doesn't seem to provide direct links to reviews now, otherwise I'd just link it directly.
Amazon has stainless steel ones that I like. Good size as well
There is a bombilla set on Amazon from the brand Balibetov. I like how you can unscrew the filters and rise them off and then screw it back in. It had lasted me sometime now and I recommend it. The set right now is around $17.
Great ! So I'm buying the same one as you and I found this bombilla on amazon. Do you think is allright ? Can't wait to try chimarrao !
wow that is really expensive. Even amazon.it is cheaper:
Where in Europe? 500gr costs around 6 EUR. This one around 13 a kilo:
That choice is up to you my friend, there are many options available. Since you don’t want to cure a gourd your options are glass, plastic, and metal. Personally I prefer the glass kind because the Yerba does immediately fall like it does with the other ones and it is more aesthetically appealing. Here is one I would recommend https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Balibetov-calabaza-Mate-vidrio-Bombilla/dp/B01N7VY0JL/ref=sr_1_7?crid=SP5OR6PN3KG9&keywords=yerba%2Bmate%2Bcup%2Bleather&qid=1645958934&sprefix=Yerba%2Bmate%2Bcup%2Blea%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-7&th=1

That would be a “matelisto” or “mate autocebante” https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Matelisto-Botella-portátil-bombilla-autocebante/dp/B07H4S8TB8
You put yerba in the top compartment and water in the bottom one and you just drink it. Of course this is a cheap plastic thing and I couldn’t find a full metal one in Amazon.
They're nearly neighbours: it's a mere 25 km bike ride through southwestern Misiones, from the Sol y Lluvia factory to Amanda (Cachuera) headquarters.
Make the jump over Rio Paraná, and get some Paraguayan yerba a try (Pajarito, La Rubia, Campesino…) It's mere 56 km from CBSé to Colón HQ.
Is that the Everpure gourd with silicone straw tips? How is it working for you? I've read in the reviews that the interior is straight making it difficult to use for mate. I want to buy my first mate as beginner and would like to get a good start.

Thank you, just what I could find in my budget on Amazon that wasn't wooden. Same with the mate, I don't think it's anything special, found it on Amazon - it's this one:
Yerba Mate Tea Soul Mate Sin Humo... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FD9TMM6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I got this set and love it.
Yeah I have never seen a torpedo gourd made of glass or metal that is leather wrapped. Well I have, but not one I’d buy. I’d recommend looking on Etsy maybe. I looked for one myself but decided to settle on the calabash gourd. Although you can’t use it every day because it needs drying time, I still love it. Mine isn’t top tear either, it’s from Amazon. I got it here. The thing is that they vary from size since it’s calabash, it depends on how the fruit was grown. I got two and one was much smaller, but you could ask via email or Instagram if they do satisfaction guarantee returns. The leather and stitching coloring is kinda off on the Amazon photo. It looks more how mine does.
I’m probably going to get just this for now

And agreed, the mate is a great one. I actually prefer drinking from my calabash mate, but this one is just so practical and low-maintenance, and it pretty much goes everywhere with me because I just don't need to worry about it.

Hello, yes, I got plans for Android/IOS release:
You can sign-in to my newsletter, so you won't miss the release:

Thanks :) If you wish you can join my email newsletter. Newsletter or discord (link in upper post). Game about it is crazy, but why not :)
I was scrolling through digital atlases of yerba mate land (because I don't have the time/resources ATM to make an actual IRL journey there), and stopped by some yerbateras/ervateiras, including Yacuy in Canoinhas, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
And what should I say … different map services somewhat … disagreed … on how to call this very place.
For the audacious: https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=60e1707c-2ab0-4ef0-8a61-1be04010cd7f&cp=-26.166659~-50.414026&lvl=18&style=h&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027
I'm not sure either what Google Maps thinks an ervateira should look like (I have a slightly different conception of factory buildings than a pavement strip). But they at least don't fall back to profanity.
I used to make cold brew yerba mate all the time. I used this Hario cold brew tea pot. 15g of yerba/ 1000ml of water. Put in the fridge overnight. Bam, you've got delcious cold brew yerba. If you are the US I recommend this yerba. Green unsmoked with no dust. That makes the best IMO.
Te recomiemdo una yerba paraguaya kurupi, a mi me gusta la que tiene boldo y menta, pero tenes otras variedades.
Those always clog in my Uruguayan mate. I use the spoon bombillas. Right now I’m using this one:
304 Stainless Steel Colorful Beads Straw Yerba Mate Stainless Steel Straws Head Filter - Yerba Mate Cup Accessories-With Removable Starw - Clening Bru https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0828ZS5DS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_g8qn1qAG7o6Bd
I have a pico de loro too but they don’t work as well. With the spoon kind though, I drink the first 2 cebadas with cold water, and I spit out the dust.
Always shake your mate gourd when you use powdery or fine yerba. Put your hand over it, and turn it upside down and shake it several times. That allows the dust to settle on your hand and easier to take out in the first 2 cebadas
Amazon might be your best bet in the US on finding some of the other brands you're looking for, but it does depend on the city you live in. I would say to do some research on some other well-known brands and see what you might like. As for what I would recommend, I usually recommend Cruz de Malta as it is well known and one of my personal favorites. Salud!
I may not be able to help too much as I liked how strong it is, but I'll try.
It should mellow out a bit as you drink more from one mate, and you should adjust to some of the bolder flavors.
Try adding less mate, as well (1/2 gourd instead of 2/3, for example), and add more water. You'll get a less intense flavor, while still being able to enjoy it.
The profile you describe expecting sounds like an unsmoked yerba. I may get banned for this (jk), but I'd definitely recommend giving one of them a shot. If you're in the US, goyerbamate is my go-to for bulk unsmoked yerba, or you can get Kraus (I'd recommend the leaf and stem variety because it's milder, which is pretty good.
Some brands have more than others and you can remove some of it to your liking but the yerba must have some polvo in it. It’s part of it. It gives the infusión body, taste, etc.
Regarding the removal of excess polvo, there are some tools that help with that like this
FYI, if you don't like the dust, there are "low dust" style Yerba Mate on the market. I tried it once, but prefer the dust, so I went back.
Like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Yerba-HI-CAFFEINE-CERTIFIED-Organic-SUPER-GREEN/dp/B0774VSX34
I use this one: THERMOS Stainless King Vacuum-Insulated Beverage Bottle, 40 Ounce, Midnight Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0017IHRNM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_WN09VA7SEEAF8H3VXV4W?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It will last you a lifetime if you take care of it, and I see the price is very competitive right now.
The pouring with this one seems difficult at first, but you’ll get a hold of it quickly. Just practice a few times with different opening levels and you’ll find the one that works for you and the way you pour. It took me a few tries but now I can use it like a pro haha.
My closes friend has had the same for like 10 years now, and it’s completely scratched, it even fell of his car, and still works perfectly. If you take care of it, it will be the last thermos you buy.
There is someone in NJ who is from Uruguay and sells mate gourds custom engraving on them too. As for the bombilla I bought some in Amazon that am very happy with.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07ZQRXR3M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_ATFKV2338M6AFMQKVFTJ I hope I did the link correctly. Its the Ice Shaker 12 iz. Skinny Tumbler from Amazon. I got the Mermaid color. You can also get it straight from Ice Shaker https://www.iceshaker.com/ but you have to buy a certain amount or there's a steep (imo) shipping fee.
I think I might get this one price seems right to me. https://www.amazon.com/BALIBETOV-Insulated-Matera-Practical-Outdoor/dp/B08N1H23BZ/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=yerba%2Bmate%2Btravel%2Bbag&qid=1617364866&sr=8-7&th=1
I've recieved this one on Xmas and it's the best I ever had - You can find Gaucho market directly on Etsy to support them directly, you can get the bombilla included if you get one of their handmade gourd as well. Highly recommend.
I see nothing wrong with this one... (Then again, I just got started with this whole Yerba mate thing)
Start with working one side first. There's a trick to flipping it, but I've only done it successfully twice.
What gourd shape are you using? I use both one of these and a small stubby calabasa, and the technique is very much the same.
Here's what I do:
If you can't pull any water out, you can carefully pour off the water, re-pack the mountain gently (you're working with mud at this point), and repeat 4-7.
I brew hot with a French press, than I bottle it in glass with tops

Than I refrigerate, once I am ready to consume will flavor it with a citrus juice and some sweetener, honey or simple syrup. It tastes like what I put in it, and lasts for a week. Still strong and gives me a perfect cold drink to pick me up in the morning.
When you talk about Mate to go, do you mean tea-like infusion (Mate Cocido) or actual Mate (this is gourd, thermos, Yerba and straw)? For Mate Cocido I’ve seen many Americans using the French press. It’s easier if you get ahold of mate Cocido in “saquitos” (tea-bag), then you just prepare them as a regular tea. Now, if you want the actual Mate, a few years ago they introduced this “Mate listo” (the meaning is closer to the idea of “Mate to go”) where you put the hot water in, then some Yerba inside a built-in gourd, pit the cap on an drink Mate. Here is a link to amazon, where you can see the product. Last time I went to Argentina I bought one, but it wasn’t really good. While you can drink Mate while driving (similar as if you were drinking a soda from five guys) or just feel word and it’s not the same (at least to me).
I got this ceramic one from amazon that I like
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018GR1N5O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you want a traditional experience go for a gourd. I don't use mine every day because its much easier to use the ceramic. But the gourd doesn't get hot on the outside as quick which is nice.
This video is a pretty good primer that can help you get started on preparing mate.
If your US-based, you can buy your mate related gear on Amazon, this is a pretty good starter kit. The wooden "gourd" is not traditional, but it is easier to clean.
There are tons of good Yerba brands to choose from, but to start I'd recommend a few of these:
Canarias
Rosamonte
Guayaki (Traditional) -- if you're US-based, this one is easiest to find, likely even at your local grocery store.
Good luck and enjoy!
Get yourself a French press, I get 64oz of Yerba from 5 large scoops.
Upgrade Stainless Steel Strainer Large Coffee French Press 34Oz with 4 Level Filter Screen https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083JSPL2T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_E3VGFb792YHJG
This is the one I have & I love it!!!
It's more of the size of the vessel. I use this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G86S19J/ and am very happy. (My gourd mates would mold cause I was bad about cleaning. Stainless Steel is much easier for me!) I used to use a regular coffee mug, and it was too big of a serving.
They taste less strong and less "smokey" than the classical smoked Yerba Mate...But they still taste good and strong, especially the first 0,5 liter of water.
The Pure Leaf version is just a little bit more expensive, but has a strong taste too...Since they are "bio" Mate and air-dried and so unsmoked, they taste pretty good in my opinion..But if you search the strongest taste and the more bitter taste, that's not the Mate for you.
I personally prefer the Pure Leaf version.
Read the comments on the amazon website to get an idea of what kind of mate it is.
They are both "Bio", air-dried and unsmoked...But they are pricey compared to the usual mate from other brands. They only offer a packet of "500g" (wished they would do a 1kg version) and you can see by the prince that it cost as much or even more than other mates which are 1kg packets... So it's a kind of "premium" mate, but it's definitely not the classical and traditional kind of mate.
You should try one of both types in my opinion.
I'd look into getting a kit: Mate (gourd), bombilla, and yerba. You should be able to find some online.
Gourd: I would stick to a wooden or stainless. It's easier, doesn't mean you have to. However, the kits are often targeted toward beginners.
Not sure where you're located (Amazon US), here's Amanda's classic kit: https://www.amazon.com/Amanda-Yerba-Gourd-Bombilla-Straw/dp/B002Q3XMI6
Watch out for prices, some US stores/sellers have terrible prices.
There is ONE model in amazon (at least in spain) which comes with this stopper: https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B00G91W8SG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I tried buying also a smaller one, but it seems the stopper is not interchangeable, because the thermos that brings it is an older model, and it seems the stopper is no longer the same.
If someone knows how to get a mate stopper if europe for the 2020 line, I´d be very grateful to get that info.
I have the same one... its double walled 18/8 Stainless Steel, keeps your mate hot for a lot longer!
Made by Balibetov, and you can pick one up on Amazon
I found them just on amazon but im always looking for new places to buy:) I thought this would be a good place to start https://www.amazon.com/Yerba-Mate-Ilex-Paraguariensis-Plant/dp/B018K1XLEW/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=yerba+mate+plant&qid=1586191621&sr=8-2
I got my seedlings just on amazon:) https://www.amazon.com/Yerba-Mate-Ilex-Paraguariensis-Plant/dp/B018K1XLEW/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=yerba+mate+plant&qid=1586191621&sr=8-2
To be honest I havent had any mates from these plants but I will in a few years once they get big enough.
I picked up a Balibetov Double Walled 18/8 Stainless Steel one on Amazon and love it! Comes with two bombillas and I find it keeps the Yerba hotter for longer.
First of all, if you can locate someone who makes crafts with horn, they should be able to make you a guampa, you just need one with thick walls and remember to point out that the base needs to be a hard wood plug, you put it inside the horn after heating it up in water (it softens up). Of course also ask them to polish it inside and outside.
Second option. Pajarito and kurupi have kits that include a guampa.
Third option. There are authentic artisans selling guampas on Etsy and ebay.
lastly, you can possibly use a "viking drinking horn" like this one although some do say "Not for hot drinks" so be aware.
I use a wooden gourd by El Matero, super easy to clean and dries in a second with a paper towel
that's not bad. I noticed in Montreal a LOT of our grocery stores (Adonis, PA, Branche D'Olivier, Metro) have Yerba Mate too! There are a ton of argentineans and Syrians here so quite a few of them drink mate. However, none of our stores have a selection this large, they're more spread out.

I don't see a brand that's pretty consumed in montreal, https://www.amazon.ca/Pampa-Yerba-Mate-Organica-Organic/dp/B01DWM2B2M

I see this one a lot. It's my favorite!
This is Canarias (regular). And that is not a water boiler but a thermos! I like having a large thermos as I tend to drink a lot of mate. Here’s a link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012SNTCU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_dWwuDbNYNP4NV
Hey whatsup, first of all welcome. I know exactly what you are talking about. I wanted one aswell when I started drinking mate. This one does have a red spout.
https://www.amazon.de/Gaucho-Bruno-TrinkEnjoyflasche-Edelstahl-ikonischem/dp/B07KQ5DG7N
It’s the one that holds about 5-6 oz. This is actually the bombilla that came with it! Here’s the link to the exact one I have: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KGI3912/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gPwuDbP83TRM8
Appreciate the pictures! The first one is what I’m trying to find but a natural one.
I agree about the amazon part. I read aloooooot of reviews before deciding to get this one - Balibetov [New] Handmade Natural Mate Gourd Set (Original Mate Cup) Including Bombilla (Yerba Mate Straw) (Dark Brown) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CNWZPGQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_DFXfDbR5MQ71B
A lot of people in their reviews said the same thing about cracking, or falling apart and even having mold grow in it after a few uses.
I guess I’m lucky ♂️ I haven’t had any problems. I did cure it for 36 hours though...so maybe that helped!
Where did you get the one in the first picture?
I picked up this one and I'm pretty happy with it. It's not "natural", but it's easy to clean and the opening is nice and wide.
Heres one on amazon. I bought all of mine in argentina and that's the closest you'll probably get. Personally, I love the ones with the complete flat top. whereabouts do you live? maybe I can send you one?
Where are you located? I believe a local shop to me has them in stock. I could potentially buy and ship.
Another good option would be a French press thermos. Something like this.
I like union just fine, and they sell a low powder variant, though I've only had the normal one: https://www.amazon.com/Yerba-Union-Suave-Contenido-Polvo/dp/B01N5IF3Z1/ref=sr_1_127_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1509142323&sr=1-127&keywords=yerba+mate
I'm a student and this is what keeps me going.
Nice. How about https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008KVCPH2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
To permenantly maintain it at that temperature? I use one to keep a freezer at 0 degrees Celcius for kimchi and meat.
It was a pretty decent size. This is the gourd I used. It's about 4 inches tall.
Ah, Well what about one of those French Press coffee cups that have the plunger inside, like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008TYX1DW
The only thing I could think is that when you pulled the plunger out it would have leaves and sticks all over it and be messy. But maybe there's another way to put the hot water in.
Post whatever solution you figure out here!
Try legitimate Argentinian yerba mate. I recommend Rosamonte (Especial): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003IF93TI/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_UgBywbH275VJ4. It's replaced coffee for me. Though the experience is better with a gourd and bombilla, it's fine to put some in a tea bag (I do this at work).
If you're in the market for a gourd but don't want the hassle of maintaining a traditional one, you could go with something like this. I own 4 traditional gourds and this one and I enjoy both. The bombilla is actually pretty good too.
Oh really? I personally would LOVE a reasonably priced yerba mate fulfilled through Amazon shipping so I could get it with Prime. I pay $13 per kilo locally. But, I know Amazon's fees are very high though so I'm not sure it would be possible for a seller to get close to that. This was the most reasonably priced one I could find.
As for unsmoked, the thing is, it's hard to tell. Rosamonte is definitely smoked, as are most South American brands. La Hoja might be one brand that's unsmoked, and I've messaged them asking them about it but I've never heard back. Anything labeled organic is a good start though.
I'm not sure how familiar you are with mate, but the reason some of us want an unsmoked mate is due to the some possible links between cancer and smoked yerba mate.
Thanks a lot for this information. $16.50/kg on Amazon is actually pretty good price. Usually the price is around $19.99/kg. Sometimes there are coupons ($3 off when you buy 2), and if you buy in bulk you can get to $13/kg (http://www.amazon.com/Yerba-Mate-Rosamonte-bags-each/dp/B002ZBBTLG).
