NAG magazine had quite a bustling indie game dev scene back in the early 2000s. There was tons of talent and potential there. I wouldn't be surprised if parts of that community are a part of bigger game development projects now.
I made a couple of games which were featured in the game.dev section of the magazine/cover DVD. (One example is one of the first games I made, Killer Worm. I point out this particular game because I'm still a bit bitter about the guy who stole the concept and made Death Worm after admitting to playing Killer Worm prior to development. Protect your concepts, kids! )
Duelyst - A surprisingly awesome hybrid game, a mix of card games like Hearthstone and turn based tactic games.
Xonotic - My favourite FPS around. It uses a fork of the quake engine and has amazing multi-player. Unfortunately the ZA server seems to have been taken down some time back. It never really attracted a crowd. :(
