I've used both Adapter and Handbrake and I liked Adapter a little bit better, mostly because I could drag and drop a whole bunch of things and it was a little quicker to set up. They both have a bit of a learning curve when it comes to settings, but I liked Adapter's user interface better overall. Good luck!
Never used it before, but I found this.

You may have to use an intermediary to convert the mkv to mpeg2 for dvd. mkv is a container and can use a lot of codecs, but newer stuff is usually mpeg4.
For converting all other types of files on OS X, I use adapter.
I don't know so you'll have to maybe google and play around til you find something. Cause mostly you just want it to be fast. Try adapter. I use it to extract images but it says it can do watermarks on vids. Says it works for windows
Adapter by MacroPlant, it's a new, free video converter that is much, much easier to use than Handbrake. It looks slick and works great. Has totally replaced Handbrake for my personal use (converting MKVs to MP4s)
Adapter! I use it a lot. its ffmpeg based but has a nice user simple user interactive instead.
Great for all that kind of stuff (frames to video, video to frames).

its really just simply, drag all images into the program, select output (.mov, .mp4, .avi, whatever you like it has them all), put in the framerate and hit convert.
While Handbrake and VLC work well I find myself tending to gravitate towards a neat little app all the time. Its name is Adapter and you can find it at: http://www.macroplant.com/adapter/
Very clean and Mac-ish UI, just drag and drop. No association at all, just a happy customer.
I could be wrong, but Adapter looks like one of the best, if not the best, simple/easy/quick all-round converter/compressor for audio/video/images, and it's free.
Late to the party here but I have a similar issue - PMS on old low power laptop that won't transcode.
I notice you mention you're an OS X user - so I'd recommend Adapter which I've been using.

I'm no expert in this, but this works for me / my CC.
I select Video > Custom MP4 as the type. mpeg4 as the video encoder, AAC as the audio encoder and leave everything else the same as source
I've used an app called Adapter for still shots. http://www.macroplant.com/adapter/
I don't know if it works with DRM content. I don't have any DRM content to test it with. But you can give it a shot if you want.
Have you tried using Adapter to convert the movie, and Burn to burn the DVD? Unfortunately there isn't a lot of good documentation out there on how to do this (in some cases it's just easier getting a few adapters to send video/audio to a tv), but if you get it to work, you could be the first to tell us how it's done.
