Yes. APKs are android apps that you can install. If you go to Aptoide and try downloading any of the apps, click on the app in your Downloads section of Silk Browser. It will install the Aptoide app, and from there it's like the Google Play Store.
Please, please, please make sure you have a mobile antivirus before doing this. Android viruses can do nasty shit to your mobile.
It's been a while since I've dealt with the Play Services, but as far as I know, you'll have to switch out the Play Store and Chrome for other apps, too, if you want to get rid of the entire underlying Play Services thing.
Actually really not sure about Chrome. Could very well be that it's self-contained and doesn't depend on the rest of the Play Services, but the Play Store for sure does.
Personally, I for example get most of my apps off of F-Droid, which I personally like, because all things on there are open-source, so you can be relatively certain that '' don't download crapware, and then if I need apps which aren't on there, I get them off of Aptoide.
If that's not enough selection for you, there's obviously also the Amazon Store, and if you want access to the entire Play Store, including apps that you paid for, I can recommend Raccoon, although it does take a bit of time to wrap your head around.
the inkBOOK™ Onyx – 6″ would probably solve this via the installation of android 4 rss feed apps, which seems to be available in their alternative store. They got a proper touchscreen (instead of the weird touchscreen by stylus on a previous model), so might improve significantly the use of reading through kindle/kobo/nook apps.
but, for a device released 2month ago, it has the dpi of the older paperwhite. The dual processor gives it less autonomy that basic ereaders. The reliability of the onyx is unknown, probably lower than the competition. No idea how good their customer service is.
Also, the calibre software on pc, has a button that imports rss feeds, converts them into ebooks, then sends them to your ereader (Edit: see this). That might work any ereader, but you have to ask other how "comfortable" this method is, and if it works for all rss sources.
I am unaware if developers wrote specific apps to be installed on specific "rooted" ereader devices. Otherwise check non eink displays.
Edit: also they are right, the sentence "flipping pages easy and smooth" is vague. Go check how fast the pages are turned on a e-ink device to see if it is ok with you.
You could always just use an alternate store. The good ones aren't any worse than Play. They both have their faults, but 1Mobile and Aptoide are both nice if you know what to look for.
F-droid is a specialized store for free and open-source apps. It doesn't sound like you would have much use for those, but you can download an app called "Yalp Store" from F-droid that will allow you to download .apk files directly from the Play Store. If you're adamant about getting all your programs direct from Google, it's your best bet.
I JUST BOUGHT NOVA. Luckily it was only a quarter. Looks sweet don't know if it has widgets in the dock and custom row/columns like nova but will give a try later. I love vertical launchers but no one can get them right except for QQ. I have seen a feature in my ipod and zune for a long time but one only QQ caries it. Check out that sweet scroll bar. It's actually a useful part since it helps you find apps by name. Please someone implement this into a launcher that doesn't suck. Then again it's been a while since I used it maybe QQ isn't as lacking anymore.
You can find previous versions of apk's relatively reliably on Aptoide. Looks like they have both com.oculus.horizon and com.oculus.home available. If that does not work out for you, let me know and I'd be happy to look at my backup from Oct 3rd.
this http://www.aptoide.com/ its basically an alternative to the google play store.
I love it because sometimes google play says an app isn't compatible for my device then i go on aptoide install the app through it and it works perfectly
I just gotta make sure I can side load apps on the forge tv cause thats the big thing for me.
I know on the MOJO you can easily
Check out Aptoide. It's a Free Software app store, with almost all the apps you can get trough Gapps. Just download the Aptoide .apk from the website, install it and you're good to go.
