I loathe ads/commercials: of any kind, on any format.
This is my free 'no root' Android solution.
I had used others, this one does more & does it better IME.
Non Rooted Devices
The above apps may not be able to block youtube ads, for that you may have to root your phone, install Xposed Module and install the Youtube Adaway module.
Install YouTube Vanced & turn on the black or gray theme (which version you choose pending) & install Blokada & set it up to block ads within the entire device.
It is first and foremost an adblocker. Read more about it here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/themes/adhell-2-rootless-ad-blocking-t3663559
I would either use v2 from the XDA forum or Blokada or Disconnect Pro: http://blokada.org
I think Blokada is the best one because it's free, open source and pretty customizable. Block This! would be my second choice for non rooted devices. Also free and open source but it has a fixed blacklist.
Blokada uses 1 hosts file by default but you can enable 5 others in its blacklist or even add your own.
I use Blokada on my MiBox3. You will have to sideload the app and use an app launcher because the file will not show in the main menu for sideloaded apps. You can get a launcher in the google store. Sideloading is just a fancy term for putting the file on a drive and manually uploading it to your MiBox. Or you can install a web browser and install blokada from the website directly onto your MiBox. I hope this helps. http://blokada.org/index.html
I've heard good things about AdGuard, but I personally use Blokada on Android. Does basically the same thing, and is FOSS. No root required, unlike AdAway.
Be sure to check/add to your whitelist though; for example, it blocks Google Photos' automatic backup when left at default settings.
To get around YouTube ads (and also for PiP/background playback and a lovely dark theme), I use YouTube Vanced. If you prefer a FLOSS alternative, NewPipe is also excellent, but I honestly prefer the convenience of logging into my YouTube account, for sync across desktop and mobile. I may change my mind down the road.
On my Linux desktop, I use uBlock Origin and HTTPS Everywhere browser extensions.
WRT ad blocking, I'd go one further and sideload the F-Droid Open Source app repository and install Blokada.
Blokada creates a local vpn on the device which blocks ads on everything without the need to root (and possibly void the warranty) on your phone.
The reason I suggest F-Droid to install it is just to simplify checks for updates to the app.
Blokada, firefox (mobilversionen) med uBlock origin, newPipe eller youtube vanced.
I didn't see the ad because I'm using Blokada :)
I found more apps like Salary Motivator in the Play Store using salary timer as a search phrase. Not sure if there were any that had a widget but you might want to check that out..
Blokada works with Android. It's not in the Play store so there's a couple of simple steps to get it going, but it's absolutely free, easy to use, and written by good people.
uBlock is more desktop-oriented. It is possible to run it with Firefox on Android for certain types of masochists. It, too, is absolutely free.
That's Acubattery, and it was for an experiment.
I recently installed Blokada, which uses a local VPN to block ads, and wanted to know if it strongly affected the battery. Since it's a VPN service, the stock battery stats didn't give enough info to separate out Blokada from the rest of the system services.
Turns out, neither does Acubattery. I probably would need a root battery stats app to do it, but with casual observation, Blokada doesn't seem to affect the battery much.
First of all, there are other good chromium based browsers out there that don't scoop up all your data and send it to google. If you are new to privacy, you might want to use Brave, as it will have the same look and feel without the google spyware and an adblocker included by default. Bromite is a better option privacy-wise, but it will seem more retro to someone who's used to using the latest chrome.
Second, if you really want to block ads and trackers, you'll need to block them across all apps which means you'll need to use more hardcore ad blocking, either as a native ad blocker such as Blokada, or on the DNS level such as Next DNS.
If you want to get into privacy from a beginner level (I'm assuming that you are a beginner because you use Chrome), here is a helpful series to help you understand the value of your data.
Use a VPN. humble bundle has one on sale now. also use an ad blocker. It appears you have and Android device so try http://blokada.org/ It's a Great free open source ad blocker for Android make sure Yahoo or other news media orgs get not a penny from advertisement from you
I'm really not great at tech support, but for you I'll give it a shot:
It's actually and ad-blocker named Blokada that I'm testing and using VPN. http://blokada.org/index.html
I don't see it using battery in the stats there so I was wondering if it would be under something else.
Yes, it's likely the best out there for the average user.
That and the unlock origin extension in my browser, and this imported into unlock, is all I run on my PCs. Once in a blue moon I'll get something that'll break through, but a few minutes running malwarebytes takes care of it.
If you have anything that runs android, Firefox for android allows you to run extensions so you can run unlock there as well. You should also install Blokada on them to block ads in all apps.
You could add a Pi hole to your network as well, to protect other devices on your network.
dude, try Blockada. it wipes all ads. you'll just have an annoying "key" in your status bar bc it's a VPN, but honestly, my battery has been great on the og pixel and this one with it on 247.
gotta sideload it
I'd like to recommend you Blokada for ads blocking. Its a fully open source (free of charges) ad blocker, which doesn't require root to operate. You can use the preset filter list or configure your own host lists. You can find it on fdroid or http://blokada.org/ source code: https://github.com/blokadaorg/blokada
