Use Safari?
If you're not heavy into extensions Safari is a perfectly viable alternative (on a Mac, fuck the Windows version).
And it does have some extensions, at least covering all the basics like Adblock.
You could also try using Chromium or a Chrome Canary if you prefer to stick it out with Chrome and see if there are any improvements in the betas or nightly releases.
I'm confused after looking at Chrome Canary. If Chromium is run by Google, why would it have more privacy features than Chrome? From what I garner looking at the site, it just seems like the beta release of Chrome.
Oh Gawd yes. So frustrating.
You will probably have to uninstall/reinstall Chrome. Some of the help I got said to run CCleaner, but it wasn't necessary for me.
Once done, install Chrome Canary and add the extension to that instead of normal Chrome.
If you're having a problem with Chrome/Fullscreen NOT keeping focus on a casted tab.......it's an adobe/pepper flash (built-in flash) isuue. The best work-around so far is to download Chrome Canary here: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html
Then type chrome://flags in the address bar Look for --embed-flash-fullscreen ENABLE it Refresh or restart Chrome browser. Issue Fixed. Canary is a BETA browser, so If you regularly use Chrome, you may want to keep it along WITH the current stable version and use Canary only for Chromecasting fullscreens. Download canary here: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html
If you want Chrome updates quicker download Google Canary, it's just a running beta of regular chrome that's updated with new features earlier to test development.
Obviously it is prone to bugs but I've had this "volume icon update" for months now.

This doesn't answer why, though.
Hmm. So I'm running Canary, and the helpers increment and decrement with each tab I open and close. I also do not have any of the unresponsive instances... Anything happen when you kill those?
Well the first version of Safari that was 64 bit shipped in 2011 with OS X Lion but you may recall it was kind of crappy.
One of the biggest problems is running 32-bit plugins like Flash and Silverlight in a separate process.
Nowadays Safari works a lot better than Chrome in every way I ever use it.
The current Google Chrome Canary build is 64-bit. Doesn't seem any different at all to me than release.
I've been using Google Canary these past couple of days and it's been working well for me so far.

If you download it, keep the "regular" Chrome installed just in case Canary breaks.
You could always try the Videostream Chrome Application. I find it works a bit better than the Cast Extension.
Otherwise, I would suggest installing google chrome's beta browser (Chrome Canary). I find that the Google Cast Extension works better in the beta browser.
Well word of advice to you as a webdev... jump over to the Chrome Canary (https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html) builds... that way you can stay ahead of the pack by several releases.
Honestly it's better to be prepared then end up in a situation like this.
Is this the bug you're experiencing? Or this?
In either case, malware is a possible cause. I suggest running an offline scan with Windows Defender, and a Safe Mode scan with Malwarebytes. That should take care of anything nasty your system might have. After all the scans, especially if something was removed, reset Chrome to defaults. Work with Chrome for a while after to see if it happens again.
After that, I would try installing Canary. It's the developer build of Chrome, so a few minor versions ahead of the consumer release, and see if that takes care of it.
Chrome actually comes with its own flash plugin, you don't need adobe flash installed on your computer to use it. You can see this at chrome://plugins
It automatically updates when you restart chrome and it can be enabled/disabled at that URL.
Firefox is a good alternative, but I use chrome mainly. You can also try chrome's canary version which would act like a separate browser but still be chrome.

I actually started having that problem too. No idea why, it is only on Chrome.
Try using this: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html
It is the same exact thing as Chrome except more privacy and also AdBlock works.
Just installed it from here and it looks okay for me on win 7 64

edit: wow is it buggy, will be uninstalling and stick with cyberfox
Yikes, no I use this setup. I dual boot and avoid Windows but it's 8.1 and doesn't show this behaviour.
Does Chrome Canary show the same behaviour, out of interest? Not suggesting this is a good solution since it's meant to be the least stable channel (though I actually don't find any disruption using it, that's the official line)
I'd guess Canary has no Metro interface. I can't quite remember but when I tried the Metro look I had to switch it off pretty much straight away due to some bug or another, totally agree it's cumbersome. I think my main beef was that it blocks you switching switching windows with counting everything else as "the desktop". Eugh
Check your Youtube settings here and make sure this is NOT selected "I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video" -- https://www.youtube.com/account_playback
Then again, you may need to reinstall Chrome. You can install Google Chrome Canary, which is actually for testing purposes for developers, but runs on its own and will give you a chance to see if reinstalling Chrome would even be worth it. Get it here -- https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html
Good luck!
You could try using it with Google Chrome Canary (Chrome's Beta Browser). I've had a slightly better time casting using Chrome's beta browser.
That blows! I love Honey, so much quicker than consulting retailmenot.
Chrome Canary is Chrome, but there are nightly builds by the chrome team. It can be found here
via the link above, a (what a presume to be) Google employee said the following:
TL/DR Use latest version of Chrome Canary to cast for now, until they fix the stable version.
"Hey Everyone, thanks for the reports on this issue and sincere apologies for the inconvenience. We are tracking this issue here: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=340727. We have a proposed fix for the issue, which is currently available on Chrome 34 canary; once we validate the fix, we will also include it in Chrome 33 (currently available on the Chrome beta channel). The best workaround right now if you need to cast is to install Chrome Canary (https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html), and to use it for casting until this fix rolls out to the stable channel of Chrome.
We are still not sure about what exactly causes the issue to trigger - it only occurs in a very small percentage of cases, and we've been unable to reproduce this in our labs. Michal, I am very interested in your finding that rebooting Chromecast allowed you to use Cast afterwards without issue; Travis, you did a full factory data reset and also noted that this solved the problem. Can others who are affected by this issue see if a Chromecast reboot/reset resolves the issue for you?"
Again, sincere apologies for the inconvenience, we'll try and get a fix out as soon as possible.
If only there were a link you could click with more details! They may even include a link on where you can download Chrome Canary!
I used to get around this by installing "canary" along with Chrome. Chrome I used for my main "Google Apps" account but on Canary (Chrome Beta Build) I could be logged in as my personal google account no problems. https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html
This also works with Chrome "Iron" a community Chrome project with all the google privacy invasion crap taken out. http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php
All three of these can be installed side by side and use different google accounts simultaneously. Comes in real handy when you have your google apps, a personal google account and one you are trouble shooting for a client. This way worked perfect for that. Good Luck ;)
