Great article. We built the current version of our website using the WP REST API. I'm currently in the process of doing a rebuild rebuilding using Next.js too - let me know what you think: Proper Noun
I recently came across Cosmic.js while doing some research for a client project and was thinking about giving this a shot. Have you used any truly headless CMS before that you enjoyed?
Edit: Ha just realized it's on the buttercms.com blog. I'll check it out.
Have you looked into restful cms'? You can write the front-end and just query the api for the content in javascript. It might be a bit of a learning curve, though, depending on your knowledge of javascript.
I recommend Prismic.io, Contentful and CosmicJs for hosted solutions. You can structure your schemas however you like and it has a neat interface for editing content.

I have used cosmicjs as an alternative to WP and was very impressed with the simplicity of the UI, creates easy to consume REST apis from your content.
"Why should I choose you over Firebase?"
"2 users is too restrictive"
Thanks again for the feedback. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
I'm a big fan of Cosmic, it's also a headless CMS and their slack community is really active (I think it's their CEO who posts in there?) so I get a lot of good feedback if I have questions
Hello :handwave:, shameless plug for Cosmic JS here https://cosmicjs.com
We've got lots of resources for React, Gatsby, and Next.js. And lots of great example apps in our community.
No CMS installation / config / maintenance necessary, simply drop in our NPM module to get content. Free community plan to start.
Let me know if you need any help!
It checks all the boxes for 99.99% of projects.
A few things that are game changers for me:
- No CMS installation or maintenance necessary. Simply add a new Bucket and integrate the NPM module or GraphQL endpoint in your app.
- Imgix image integration. Out of the box image processing on the fly. Great for responsive development.
- Extensions can connect with 3-party APIs and services. Check out the Unsplash Extention to easily add high-quality stock photography.
And a lots more. Check out the features:

But fundamentally, it's about simplicity. By far it's the simplest dashboard and easiest to use API tools for content management I've ever seen.

Why not try a Headless CMS like Cosmic JS? https://cosmicjs.com
Cosmic JS is a drop-in replacement for WordPress so you can avoid the pain of building and maintaining the CMS infrastructure yourself.
I'm biased, but it is the dream CMS for modern website development :)
Another Headless CMS with a ton of useful features is Cosmic JS https://cosmicjs.com Offers both REST and GraphQL APIs.

It's actually a lot like parse in that it gives you the power of content in the cloud, but it's a million times easier to use and takes a lot less time to get started. (Disclaimer: I built Cosmic JS) Let me know if you have any other questions and I'd be glad to help :) You can reach me at and if you haven't already, you can browse the features here: https://cosmicjs.com/features
