NFTs are a way to certify the origin and content of a digital asset and its meta data.
Even in the scope of crypto, this is not a new concept. Crypto projects such as Crea, Poet (failed) and even Tron have claimed this usecase. Nevertheless, NFT adds the idea, that there is a digital original. This is something you may want to argue about (I don't see this), but the NFT suddenly got wide attention to something you can do using other projects for a long time: Prove, that you are the legit owner of a piece of digital bits.
With this possibility, there suddenly opens up a ton of things that you can do: With the prove of ownership comes the transfer of ownership, lending, licensing, etc.
So, I don't see the "new" in NFTs, they have been here for quite some time - creary.net is an existing platform, where you can upload / buy / sell digital art for some years now - but NFT adds standardization and wide adoption of the concept.
What is still missing to make it whole, is a certified storage of the NFTs digital data "on-chain". Currently, the data is stored somewhere, and if I delete the file your NFT points to, it is gone. This is a major problem in the concept today.

Ancient receptacles of the wind, venerated shadows, omnipresent mists, icy waters break through the cracks. There is a human being born in this drop, in which mud, ash and blood melt.
