I'm another "no problem whatsoever". Did you restore from a backup? It may be that whatever the problem is came over with the backup - a shitty driver or something. It probably makes sense to .... backup first .... then nuke the machine and give it a completely clean install ..... then copy your stuff over manually.
Etrecheck is very cool for letting you know what's going on inside the box.
Finally created a Reddit Account...
The new Macbooks will not provide a real speed boost, compared to the 2012 ones. I am still rocking a late 2011, upgraded to 16GB RAM and SSD. Runs like a champ.
Regarding your issues: How full is your internal Disk? The SSD speed will decrease drasticly if you do not have enough free space (TRIM won't work properly). How often do you reboot? For me OSX is very stable, even without rebooting, but back in the day, when I had only 4GB of RAM, a reboot made quite a difference. Have you tried a lot (badly programmed) Apps on your Mac? Some do kill performance, or destroy the OS. To name some: Huawei Webstick software caused my Macbook to take over 5min to shutdown (or freeze entirely), a program to delete remains of deleted programs scanned EVERY file I opened and slowed everything down, probably a lot more to name here. Oh and do you use chrome with many tabs open? Chrome uses a lot of RAM and Power on OSX for some reason.
There is a app to check for running kernel extensions (programms that interface deep into the OS, and often cause trouble), that could save you from a reinstall: Grab Entre check from here http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and post the log here. This app is not a "system cleaner" spam app. It just displays whats going on in your mac.
TLDR: Save the money on a marginally faster new mac and clean up your existing one.
Perhaps you can try 'Etrecheck'. Etrecheck generates a report with information on all installed system software but also installed kext, outdated or inactive software. Maybe there is something installed that you don't know or wasn't installed by you. Etrecheck is a kind of system information on steroids.
Use etrecheck, and post the resulting report that etrecheck has generated in a comment.

Also run the free adware medic to check for and remove adware.

It's apparently possible that older kernel extensions cause such crashes. Run kextstat | grep -v com.apple
in Terminal.app to find out what non-Apple kernel extensions you have.
Alternatively EtreCheck can list odd stuff like that: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Could be caused by excessive page outs. I'd run the command vm_stat and perhaps use the application http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck (Assuming you are on Mavericks) to get your pageins, pageouts and if you scroll to the bottom of an etrecheck run the sizes of those numbers in GB. Also need an uptime stat unless you fancy resetting your Mac and then trying to replicate it in a controlled environment.
You may be doing PS work that is really hammering the memory.
May be caused by slow CPUs (compared to what is available today) if you have 2.4GHz or 2.66GHz 6-cores.
http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1 is one of the best places to ask for Mac Pro help as usually someone has experienced issues related to the same particular hardware/software/problem combination.
If you can give me those numbers it may be a quick diagnosis of "get more memory and an SSD". Also reset SMC as suggested by silvermac.
run etrecheck and post results http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
without results I would think it could be: runaway apps, not enough memory (hard drive, or ram), out of date software, too much running at once, local snapshots running. Those are a few things...will have more input once etrecheck is posted.
I would run a fresh install of mavericks if you can.
However, to answer your questions.
1) Spotlight can index even when it does not say indexing.
2) I don't see how, as long as it was 1 file and not multiple.
3) Something is going on
4) so many things
Can you run etrecheck and post the results ? http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
System Log (all messages) in the program Console should be able to tell you what is happening, but it can be hard to use. What you can do is install 'Little Snitch' which would allow you at least to track (forbid) what program/processes use the internet.
Also you can use 'Etrecheck', a program that provides a status of all installed hardware and software on your mac (about this mac on steroids). Perhaps something is running/installed that shouldn't be there..

Try etrecheck;
Etrecheck is a kind of system diagnostics on steroids. It generates a report that contains an overview of all installed hard and software, KEXT's, startup-items, hostfile modifications. But also lists and flags outdated software or software/drivers that failed to install. It generates a very extended "diagnostic" report.
It can help figuring out why your mac crashes.
Nothing from Repair Disk either? No error codes mentioned? Just a clean bill of health for the drive? Has there been anything new installed recently? Can you access and install anything? If so here is a tool that can display for you every process running on your machine which you could paste here so we can review what's going on. http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
If you can't run EtreCheck the next logical step is to try reinstalling OS X, which sounds terrifying but really isn't. Done properly it can be reinstalled without loosing your data. From the Recovery Mode screen select Restore from Internet which will only restore the operating system files leaving your files alone.
Glad I could help, and you got it all cleared up. I use a couple programs to keep my Mac relatively clean. Check out AdwareMedic, Onyx, and EtreCheck.
What can be helpful, a tool called 'etrecheck'.

You can export the report and its free!

It can be a part of step 3, and the 'problem owner' can post the results of etrecheck in the post.

Download and run this utility. Copy and paste the resulting output log here and we can try to figure it out.
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Edit: Here is some info on what this utility does. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174
Could be any number of things, we would need more info. Is the mac "beach balling" or are web pages not loading? Run disk repair to see if it's a disk issue then run EtreCheck ( a handy tool used by the troubleshooters over on the apple.com forums) http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Look through the output from that it it may tell you what is causing your issues. In general you will get better help on the Apple.com help boards.
You can try using EtreCheck (http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck) this utility scans your computer and details information on your Mac that other users can use to help you narrow down your issue.
I would also suggest trying out AdwareMedic (http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php) and running to ensure you don't have any junk that's causing issues.
First check the console program for messages, perhaps this message shows-up in the console. There is a program called 'etrecheck', etrecheck is a kind of system information on steroids. It generates a report that shows all installed hard and software, kernel extensions, startup-items, but also software that failed to install because its too old or incompatible.
Perhaps you can identify the culprit in the list etrecheck generates.
And perhaps you could try adwaremedic for the mac, its free and can possibly remove this.
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
good luck.
I had this the other day - it has nothing to do with opendirectory, that just takes the grief.
In my case it was an out of date extension installed by a not very good vendor that was crash-looping. Use http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck to find out what's making it ill and judicious use of launchctl to remove the offending bits.
try a PRAM reset and also a SMC reset and repair disk permissions and privileges with the disk-utility program.
If that doesn't help, download 'etrecheck', this is a kind of system information on steroids. It show which hardware and software is installed, software like kernel extensions. But also software that is outdated or not correctly installed.

Check the "Activity Monitor" (just type that in spotlight, CMD + space), as /u/alwaysgetdownvoted suggested.
As you purchased said MBA recently, I might assume that you migrated your system from an older Mac? If so there might be some kernel extensions or other system components causing trouble, as they might be too old or incompatible. Install this neat little tool: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and let the check run through...really read the log, usually fishy things are market in red :) You can then go along and hunt the troublemakers down.
Does the same issue occur on a new blank user account, if you quickly create one and do a minimal setup with your prefered browser and DOTA2?
Cheers

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
What is possible to do is do a reformat of the HD and do a fresh reinstall of the OS and set up a new account. This should erase any 'active' tracking software, and do not use Timemachine to restore her account, but set up a new.
However if the devices are registered with an anti theft service like Prey or Undercover from Orbicule (depends on how paranoid stalker-hubby was) it might still be possible to track those devices down.
Iphone/Ipad:
Some people -in situations like this- start using a new mobile number with a new sim-card, once the mac is set-up you can completely wipe the iphone and ipad's and install a fresh copy of the latest IOS versions. But the warning regarding anti-theft software is still valid.
I would also de-authorize her audible account in the current iTunes, remove account and credit card information (if undetected and possible) and also unregister with other Apple services like icloud and other services.

Is this a recent problem? Perhaps this started after an update or the use of new software?
Check in the console program the 'system log', my guess is you will see a process or program that is started every second or so (probably something from Google). You can use a program like 'etrecheck' to get information about all installed hard and software, outdated software and failed installs or corrupt software.
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
I had a similar problem with my previous imac, an old Google updater and an old 'inet' kernel extension caused the problem.

Perhaps etrecheck can give you some extra information about why this happened. Etrecheck is a kind system info on steroids, what is indicated in red is wrong. Maybe another extension is outdated or has the wrong version installed?

Looking at your screenshot, I would say "Google Chrome Helper" is the culprit, if you add up all the memory the separate Google Chrome Helper processes use, together they use a lot of memory. Perhaps Google Chrome Helper can be removed without interfering with Chrome working.

GIF's can behave sluggish while loading the first time normally. The other issues, do not seem normal.
Please run this tool and post back with results: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It helps diagnose issues and does not display personal info.
I had a similar problem, sometimes slow and a lot of hangs and crashes under Mavericks on my imac.
With 'Etrecheck' (system info on steroids) and the Console program (All messages) I found that a google updater and an old version of 'inet' were causing problems. I removed them and since then no crashes. You can use the program appcleaner to remove all the related files of a program.
