What's the OS?
For windows I've used: - Fast Duplicate File Finder (http://www.mindgems.com/products/Fast-Duplicate-File-Finder/Fast-Duplicate-File-Finder-About.htm) - Search My Files (https://funk.eu/smf/) This uses CRC checks to find exact duplicates.
I use AwesomePhotoFinder for photo duplicates. http://www.duplicate-finder.com/photo.html
They also have an MP3 de-duplicator.
For general file compares I use the free version of Fast Duplicate File Finder 4.3.0.1 http://www.mindgems.com/products/Fast-Duplicate-File-Finder/Fast-Duplicate-File-Finder-About.htm
exact duplicates or similar (e.g. edited photos)
I use Fast Duplicate File Finder MindGems the free version only does exact, but the Pro ($40) has some "similar" options.
I also use Search My Files (http://www.funk.eu, free) which generates a hash on each file. A bit buggy as it sometimes doesn't launch, but works well.
Free Duplicate File Finder from MindGems is a lifesaver tool. It can find exact duplicate files by content, duplicate file names and files with similar names. The only duplicate file finder tool that is really free and does not install any crap on your system.
