Yes, this is a terrible comparison. Photo Mechanic has been mentioned as an alternative to Lightroom for culling.
I use http://www.fastrawviewer.com/ and I like it even more than PM. It should be mentioned that it was quite long since I used PM though.
You're exactly the kind of person I was looking for! Thanks for the reply.
So you're saying that even with the Surface Pro 3, that Bridge is painful? That is disappointing, but could save me from making a $1300 mistake!
Have you used Lightroom on either of your devices? On my last trip, one guy had the SP3, with 8gb RAM and i5 CPU, and when I (briefly) played around with some images, it seemed fairly responsive. But I really didn't spend that much time with it, and am not confident of this brief observation.
I suspect it might have been one of your posts elsewhere that alerted me to the Photo Mechanic option, and I have definitely been looking into that. Kind of pricey. And if Lightroom works on the SP3 or S3, then I'd rather spend my money there.
As I was researching Photo Mechanic, I came across a very inexpensive option that might help: FastRawViewer:
This is where I found it:

It seems like it could be used in the same way as Photo Mechanic - a quick viewer, utilizing the Raw file itself, not the embedded Jpeg - but for only $15. Have you used FastRawViewer at all?
Great list, thanks! You could add RawDigger and especially FastRawViewer - great for quickly culling raw pictures and seeing a true raw histogram before importing into editing software.
> Lightroom is horrendously slow and clunky for this. It's great for editing small batches for photos, but like you I came back from holiday with thousands of photos and it's just not feasible to use lightroom for all of them.
True dat! I really recommend http://www.fastrawviewer.com/
