It's not really a con when they've got like 1000+ open source projects, is it? That list doesn't count the many 3rd party projects they've contributed patches to, either.
They also give a thousand students summer jobs working on OSS each year via Summer of Code. Smaller projects especially benefit a great deal from the additional attention.

It may be fashionable to hate google (esp if you are an iphone user), but Google is involved in far more charitable and altruistic causes then most of the companies that I know off.
You can argue that everything that Google does has an ulterior motive of making money, but then I can always argue that you are asshole - because my opinion is as much a fact at your opinion.
Sorceforge is a site I always find almost impossible to use. For Google Code, go to http://code.google.com/hosting and enter "label:csharp" in the search box. But for C#, you may well be better of with Microsoft's open source hosting at http://www.codeplex.com.
Google Project Hosting Also GitHub
Although I am concerned that having ASP experience, you are unfamiliar with web based project hosting/sourcing.
You can do a search on Google code for projects that have the "Game" label and also use your programming language of choice, like "Python": http://code.google.com/hosting/search?q=label%3AGame+label%3APython&projectsearch=Search+projects
The search output has activity level and last update date.
You can use a site like Google Code and just post the source code as a zip - you don't need to use their VCS repository. But you should reall get into version control - Mercurial would be my recommendation (easier to use than git, and better supported cross-platform) , which is supported by Google Code and by Bit Bucket.
There are many professors who could help you with this but most of them probably dont know you. I would talk to one of your professors. You can use google code to host the svn of your project.
Can anyone tell me how to find more projects like this? Meaning, data services that Google will let you download and host yourself if you're so inclined. I'm digging around for a way to browse to Google Refine from some other Goggle page, implying that it's part of some index of projects. So far no luck. I really hate when data is exposed only through a search function and not through browse. Bitch! I don't care if it's 50k data points, I don't know what I want. I just want to look, and window shop and shit.
edit: so for example, i just found that if i search for this project on this page, then i can find it. like so. From these results, I see that projects have labels (green links). But now I want to browse all labels available. Why can i not have that?
