Yay, I was just wondering yesterday about it.
I hope to one day build something like Rambox/Hamsket using a slim web engine like servo. I’m aware that webapps like slack or telegram web are probably not very suited, but a man can dream.
I installed the latest nightly of the fork (called Hamsket). I found in an issue on Github that it uses Electron 8.2.0 and that the developer aims to remove all trackers.
AFAIK Rambox is no longer Open-source, but Hamsket forked from an older version a while back and is being maintained.
Probably yes )
Another point for this - you will use the latest browser version, not the version bundled into the app.
I've tried 2 apps so far:
- github.com/TheGoddessInari/hamsket (a fork of rambox): I couldn't use it - instead of MS Teams I've seen was just a black screen
- Wavebox - there are no icon in the tray on Gnome and support didn't respond at all ((
For me I like not linking my account and friends to my phone number. I also use it to chat with some family members that still don't have a smart phone.
It has better desktop integration. I have mine running in Hamsket (aka Rambox-os) with my other chat services.
Wire is open to federation. Last I looked it wasn't there yet, but they're actively working towards it.
As a bonus, it's also headquartered in Switzerland instead of the ~~NSA~~ USA. You'll hear people say 'but Signal doesn't keep metadata', which is great, except we should all remember that Hushmail couldn't access your encrypted email until forced by the US to modify their client so they could.
