My current business Just Add Content was my first business attempt. I got lucky. I had a few other side projects, but they were for fun, I never tried monetizing any of them.
I started by making a website for myself for my graduate thesis. Then I made one for my brother-in-law's and found I really enjoyed it. I turned it into a business when I discovered a 'secret' and saw an opportunity to do it better. This happened over the course of years, but it always does. I had no background in programming, but my secret gave me an advantage.
I would advise most people to at least have some knowledge of the field, but it's much easier if you have a secret. Maybe that secret is an "in" of some sort (i.e. you can land a big first customer), or maybe you have some esoteric knowledge that lets you really niche down. Maybe your secret is that the field is a tough one to crack, but you love it so much that it doesn't really feel like work. Maybe you're technically savvy and can create an advantage that way. Your secret advantage could be something as simple as working at a veterinarian or pet store giving you easy access to customers and starting a pet sitting/grooming/walking service. Whatever it is, just find it and exploit the hell out of it.
Whatever you choose, unless you're independently wealthy it's often better to keep your day job and do it as a side project on the side until it can keep you afloat.
Hi. I'd be willing to help out with an interview, I own Just Add Content. It's a website platform for small businesses and I'm a self-funded, solo founder.
Also, in regards to you using rel="nofollow" for links, it's typically better if you don't use the nofollow in this case. This is largely because there's no real reason to nofollow these links and it seems a bit suspicious (i.e. unnatural) when it's used unnecessarily. It's also a bigger perk for those volunteering their time to help you with interviews.
The cases when you'd typically use nofollow are things like paid content, prioritization (i.e. signup/login links), or for untrusted content.
Hope this helps. Disregard if I'm misunderstanding your situation, but if I am please explain so I can add a new example to my experience. Thanks.
