There are alternative services like Line 2 for example, but I've never tried them so can't comment on how well they work.
Another option is a dual-SIM phone, assuming it supports both your work and personal carriers.
So most of my contacts have an iPhone so for them I can iMessage or make phone calls with Facetime Audio! (goes over data). If I get a normal phone call I do not answer. (This is one of the annoying things).
Otherwise, for android users and other calls, I used to use Google Voice. They discontinued it it seems so I looked for another option. I have been trying this: https://www.line2.com/ and I like it a lot. The app is pretty good. But it's an extra $10 a month. Still much cheaper but it has some limitations like can't receive mms pictures.
Would be a perfect world if everyone just used whatsapp!
Yep. It's a cloud-based phone system that lets you take/make calls and texts with a separate phone number from an app on your mobile or tablet.
It can be set up to simply work like another phone, sending callers to voicemail when you don't answer, forwarding callers to specified other numbers (like a distributed sales team) or you can set up a comprehensive auto attendant system with any variety of rules for both normal callers and VIP callers (press 1 to do this, press 2 to do this, etc.)
What you want is an IVR.
Twilio is kind of the gold standard in this arena, but doesn't come cheap.
There's also Line2 which is probably more in the church budget (assuming they're not rolling in money).
There was one that was advertising on some podcasts a few years ago, but I can't remember the name of it. Probably does about the same thing.
You can sort of hack your way through it with Google Voice, but I wouldn't deploy something like Google Voice in an actual business environment where there's no support or quality control unless you're 100% prepared to be their entire IT department.
So I think you could port it to bell. But that would only work for iPhone users. I am trying out this servire: https://www.line2.com/ and ported my old number to them (really easy you just fill out a form). They charge $10 a month so i'll see if it's worth it but they offer some cool features!
Yup. Totally. I don't make voice calls that often so it doesn't affect me much.
Google voice was great because it was free but it seems to be discontinued now. I found this alternative for talking to Android users and making phone calls: https://www.line2.com/ But it costs $10 a month. Which is reasonable.
I wonder if Bell cares? I know both the front desk representatives I have had have known the plan I was using and put the sim in my iPhone so they did not care. But I can see if it gets popular enough they might re think that.
For several years I've used Line2 for a $15/month toll free number. They have mobile and PC apps. You can also set up one of those "Press 1 for X" answering systems through their website.

You may want to look into Toktumi. Everything is hosted on our servers, purely mobile. (Software phone clients for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. Mobile app, called "Line2", can be downloaded from respective app store for free.)
You can sign up for a free 7 trial. (Truly free - you don't add your billing info until you want to pay for the service.)
This is likely the only comment I will ever make because this is my "lurk reddit at work" account, but if you have any questions feel free to ask.
