You could also use the free version of mapFactor Navigator, based on OpenStreetMap data. It lets you download maps for whole states/countries without having to pick out a single region as IIRC you have to with google. (Coverage varies with country, I guess, but it worked very nicely in western Europe.)
Nothing against writing down directions, though, I always get a better feeling for a new town if I look at the map beforehand...
iGudiance is the best car navigation I have ever used, better than google maps and bing. I use it in my carPC all the time.
I highly recommend it. The only problem is that the newest maps i think are from 2011. However, if you can get a volume license from ~somewhere~ you can get up to date maps until 2016.

it uses free maps updated monthly but has a bit to be left desired.
