Listen Audiobook Player is the best app I've found for audiobooks. It saves your progress as you listen to books, and has other handy features like skip back, bookmarking, and speed adjustment. MortPlayer is also good but one of the most convoluted, crowded uis I've used.
> - Which format are the audios in if I download them?
They're all available in MP3. Some are also available as M4B audiobooks. I use MortPlayer to play both on Android.
> - Are the stories subdivided into handy little tracks?
The MP3 copies are. The audiobooks are monolithic.
> - Which of the first fifty stories would you recommend?
The first fifty are priced cheaper in bulk. $32US for 12 at a time. I just started at the start and will buy the second dozen once I'm done. So far the first 3 are pretty good.
> - Did any characters who never met in the show meet in the audios?
Very first one is a multi-Doctor between 5, 6, and 7.
> - Can I listen to the stories with people who don't know to much about the show?
I don't see why not. If they at least have kind of an idea about who The Doctor is...
I just make a windows share/samba/cifs and use ES File Explorer to login and stream audio and movies, I also use Mort Player for my audio books.
I suppose you could always use Emit or XBMC for Android to do it too but that's just over kill compared to the ES File Explorer.
I listen to audiobooks when I'm stuck on the treadmill. I use MortPlayer Audio Books on my Android device and am pretty happy with it. On the rare occasion I listen to one on an outdoor run I like to take along my ClipZip because it weighs nothing, works well, and would cost only ~$30 to replace.
You won't be able to find the 'podcasts' in the same way you can music that's the point. It allows you to do a party shuffle and not end up with war and peace playing in the middle of your playlist. You should have a playlist called podcasts though and that should have your files.
I have cyanogenmod 7.2 but I'm sure it works on all default music players with android.
You can use apps like this to manually rescan your SD card.
Failing that Mort is good for audiobooks and podcasts
I used to use mortplayer for music. It was simple and didn't struggle to manage my library, you just go to the folder, and point it to the file. There's also a version for audiobooks which has some audiobook features like manual bookmark setting, position memory for each audiobook file.
