Keeping or not keeping records isn't the issue. The issue is that as a US vpn they can be forced to provide real time user data and can't even inform their users of that. So it doesn't even matter if they're not keeping records. Not if all data can be accessed by the government directly anyways (something similar happened to lavabit, which is what lead Ladar Levison, the founder, to tell people not to trust any US based it companies). Had you forgotten about that?
For a subreddit that prides itself on being critical when it comes to privacy, y'all sure are clueless when it comes to PIA and US based vpns. Use something that has at least a semblance of a company that can be trusted, like mullvad, or ivpn.
Maybe. Do your research, many if not most of the free VPN sell the data to clowns looking to make trouble. Then there is the setup, since Clowns know we are using VPN's to circumvent discovery, they got creative and found more methods. https://www.mullvad.net/ Start here. This works, when setup as directed. Use Firefox and QBittorrent setup exactly as shown, and then yes, you are home free, Happy Torrenting & Surfing!
Hey here's the guide my VPN provider uses to have it work with Plex, but feel free to follow it with tunnelbear https://www.mullvad.net/en/guides/plex-mullvad/
They claim to not log anything. Hard to say how much any VPN company can be trusted but they seem sincere and serious about privacy.
https://www.mullvad.net/en/guides/no-logging-data-policy/
EDIT: They are also one of the main sponsors of the development of Wireguard.
I'm a bit late, i admit, but perhaps these guides will be of help.
> dosent slow my download rate
There is always a bit of a decrease in speed.
> which provider would you recommend me?
look at /r/vpn's Recommendation Megathreads or thatoneprivacysite. The reviews of the latter are mostly providing speed tests.
Det eneste fornuftige er at antage at man ingen rettigheder har, og tage passende forholdsregler. Brug en VPN og/eller seedbox til jeres super mega ulovlige fildeling.
Det er ikke svært, og det koster nærmest intet.
Well you can test them on their site. They offer a 3 hour trial and honestly and you can using the 3 hour trial over and over again if you don't mind disconnecting every 3 hours and redownloading the ovpn files (unless you wanna use their client then you just have to keep putting in the new trial username)
If you want to try them just go here https://www.mullvad.net/en/account/ and click create account and it will make an account with out having to put in any details about yourself and you can do that over and over again.
They mask what you're actually doing online. So if you were to go to, say, Amazon with a VPN enabled, the router (where the blocking happens) will only be able to see the IP address of the VPN server (which isn't blocked). Once you're through to the VPN server, then your traffic continues on to Amazon.
They're also relatively cheap. The one I use is $60 per year. And it's pretty fast. Mullvad
It would work only if they keep personal information, and they don't. Even if a court order from Sweden ask them for personal information or logs, they'll have nothing to give outside of what they keep for accounting purpose (here). They are doing a "system transparency" feature they will introduce to all their server to preserve their integrity and also to make trust in VPN obsolete, you can check it here.
I disabled DHT and the like just because Mullvan's bittorent guide says to. I assume it is to do with exclusive privacy beyond putting an umbrella between you and your ISP. Same with the proxy. Said guide: https://www.mullvad.net/en/guides/bittorrent/
As for IP and DNS, everything seems to be going through my VPN. Kill-switch wise, Mullvan has an option that in the case of a disconnect from the VPN, it kills networking for the entire PC. In theory, that seems optimal for security. As for DNS settings, I am unable to find any, but all tests show that it is connecting to a DNS on the VPN's side. It does however have a strait toggle for IPv6, of which I have disabled.
And very much, thank you for the response.
you can always open up a port on your VPN and forward the traffic as shown here (this is my VPN's guide for that, although the steps should basically be the same)
Are you forwarding your traffic from your VPN to your server and vice versa? There's a guide here on doing it with my VPN, but the guide should work with all VPNS
Zack, anonymer Account.
> would advice them to implement it asap.
Totally agree. Several major competitors have already deployed it, with more on the way. This is going to be what we call a "big deal."
Noch ein Update für die, die es interessiert: Ich habe mich für https://www.mullvad.net als VPN Provider entschieden. Ist gut/sicher getestet, recht flott (!) und mit 5EUR/Monat für 5 Devices bezahlbar.
> Thing is, I have never seen an ad for a Rust job.
Most rust jobs at the moment don't hire for Rust specifically; they are cross-language positions. That said, they do come up too, here's one from just yesterday: https://www.mullvad.net/blog/2017/12/5/hiring-full-time-rust-developer-iosandroid-app/
However, the order of magnitude is obviously not comparable yet.
It looks great on paper. Doesn't care about torrenting, stores no logs, and has dns leak protection.
Try out their free trial. My experience with Swedish vpns is that although they have local servers in my country, they're often too slow unfortunately.
not OP, but I can recommend https://www.mullvad.net/en/ - as anonymous as it gets (they don't even have customer data about you) and I haven't had a single performance issue in over 2 years of using it.
Free ? damn right it's free(free to give everything they know about you) Even some vpns that claim they dont do logs will probably be forced to give up the information if asked(depends tho, especially under U.S Jurisdiction. )
i suggest :
https://www.mullvad.net ($5) https://www.nvpn.com($7)? (not sure, but check em out)
Setting up the mullvad VPN service only requires an account number that is in credit. You just follow the instructions. With the account number you can download a configuration file that will work with openvpn. (Don't use PPTP, it's insecure)
Use TOR to access, so they don't know where you connect from. They don't require personal information, only issue you an account number like a Swiss bank account. They don't keep any records on you, by design. You can pay with bitcoin.
That's as bulletproof untraceable as it gets, atm.
free VPNs are usually ok but tend to have datacaps (look for non-logging services)
used securitykiss free vpn at the beginning but the free version is useless for streaming etc.so i switched to mullvad. for me its the best service since know one of the guys who runs it but you can get a VPN for about 60% of what i pay if you look around.
There are many ways to obtain and use bitcoin. I'll give you one that should get you about two weeks worth of VPN service. Other people can suggest other methods.
Setup a wallet at blockchain.info/wallet. I would recommend not to store significant funds there.
Go to coinworker.com, register and find some tasks to do. They will payout when your account reaches 200 points (2 USD). Give them an address from you blockchain.info wallet. This isn't the most time efficient way to earn bitcoins but it is fairly anonymous compared to transferring fiat.
When you receive your bitcoins go to mullvad.net and create an account, pay them for a day (currently 0.04 BTC) from your wallet and then setup your VPN client with the files they gave you.
