I agree, it’s the bomb if your are actually looking for something Notepad-like but much better.
Here’s a fork with more recent updates plus the new features: https://xhmikosr.github.io/notepad2-mod/
Here’s an even more recent fork in current development (sources on Github): https://www.rizonesoft.com/downloads/notepad3/
I'm gonna back up Giz, but I use VSCode it all day long for everything.
It might be a cumbersome or a tad overkill for editing really small stuff, so I gonna say that a combination of Notepad3* and VSCode is the way to go.
I wrote a guide that will help you setup VSCode for ahk in under 5 minutes.
^(* Which is my de facto editor for everything given it has syntax higlight for virtually anything and is as fast as the built-in Notepad.)
Oh I see, well I put some code together but you really should be using an editor that allows "hotlinking" (like Notepad3, is lightweight even if is feature packed):
~LButton & RButton:: Clipboard := "" Send {Home}+{End}^c ClipWait 0 if !ErrorLevel if RegExMatch(Clipboard, "(http\S+)", match) Run % match1 return
The code above will let you click with your left button and without releasing it clicking on the right button to open the URL found in the line you're in.
You can change to a keyboard hotkey, just make sure the cursor is in the line you want the URL.
I have tried Notepad++ and yes, it’s pretty fast. For even faster one might want to look at: http https://www.rizonesoft.com/downloads/notepad3/
I think that’s the lightest yet feature rich with syntax highlighting and all that I’ve found. I think it didn’t have multi document support though, but that didn’t stop any Notepad lover, right? :D
Another very fast (but not free) old favorite is https://www.editplus.com
Yet another one that looks like it fits the bill, and free, is http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/ but I haven’t tried that one personally.
I've been replacing notepad with something similar but slightly more capable for decades since it didn't support mac/linux line endings.
Currently Notepad3 is the best, still maintained replacement I've found. Not as "pretty" as notepads, but also doesn't have any of the UWP limitations (which are a deal breaker for me).
Eh, I just discovered there's a thing called Notepad3, updated recently, and one of the contributors is the notepad2-mod guy. I installed it and seems to work great. I'll be using it from now on.
