Have you tried Notepadqq? I haven't tried it but it's supposed to be like "Notepad++ for Linux".
Like /u/reddraconi said, if you have some extra time, I would highly recommend learning an editor like Vim or Emacs. They're both very powerful editors and very customization, but have a significant learning curve.
What specific features of xplorer2 are you missing?
> Notepad++ (Windows only) - Another good editor, familiar keybindings, good multiline editing, good search features. I use this one at work a lot too. It works in Wine on Linux too.
There's also NotepadQQ, which is enough like Notepad++ that it's almost a direct port.
Ok lets pick one that I like. Notepadqq is an already awesome text editor. The about page is here https://notepadqq.com/s/ and the Github is here https://github.com/notepadqq/notepadqq
Going through the tabs in Github it looks like there is 161 issues. Pull the source from github then reupload your source with the repair or feature. One issue was a Feature Request that is to add a shortcut tab to for recently closed tabs. It already has a recent files but doesn't seem to have a shortcut for this. Maybe add one and resubmit it to github where the owner of this can put your feature into the code.
Notepadqq as mentioned. Its the same like Notepad++ https://notepadqq.com/
Don‘t try Joplin in this specific case. Very nice program (using it by myself for notes) but absolutly different to notepadqq.
Personally I use KATE
there is a snap for legit Notepad++ on Linux, if you don't mind snap:
https://snapcraft.io/notepad-plus-plus
Notepadqq is a pretty close Linux alternative: https://notepadqq.com/s/
And as others have mentioned I Atom, Geany, and others.
Notepadqq isn't 1:1 verbatim but it is damn fine and I've followed their development since the beginning, they have done an amazing job.
