>I actually do use pcloud lol I was looking for an open source alternative to google drive and this what I found..
I see this, but i don't know... (100GB/24€ year)https://owncube.com/free_next_en.php
Tresorit and SpiderOak are both closed-source. Seems more like advertising than anything else to me..
> (don't believe I can set up Nextcloud when my apartment complex manages the wifi/routers
I thought this too but there are server providers that provide you with a NextCloud instance + your own domain. I use ownCube, with my server being based in Switzerland (you can choose between 5-6 countries). It's also reasonably priced.
OwnCloud is great and the app comes with an "instant upload" option for photo/video. It's designed for hosting on your own server, but there are some really, really good value hosters hout there who offer owncloud hosting as a service.
Go to ownCube and get yourself a basic account. If you feel like dealing with surly customer support, you can also get a personal server for a similar price and host it somewhere like iceland, but you have to email said customer support to get SSL set up and to install the "must have" plugins that give you calander, contacts sync, etcetera.
Use OwnCloud app on your phone to upload/download files and folders, and DavDroid app to add your calendar/contacts sync. Done! :)
you also need to do backups yourself with owncube tho
"The customer is responsible for regular backups. No form of liability and compensation for loss of data is provided by OwnCube e.U."
"In case of technical problems, there is no claim for liability for damages and consequential damages as well as loss of profit, except in the case of intent and culpable negligence."
"The customer is responsible for regular backups. No form of liability and compensation for loss of data is provided by OwnCube e.U."
just leaving this here, do your backups...
A) My backup server is on a remote location (friend). I'm not doing this, but it could be easily synced through rsync.
B) I have bought an unlimited account at https://owncube.com for a single lifetime fee. At the moment there is no offer. Maybe at Xmas.
C) Most people use G-Suite Business. The Single Accounts included unlimited Drive storage although it's described different. Costs ~10 € per month + yearly costs for a domain which will be linked to G-Suite.
It is my own nextcloud instance hosted by a nextcloud provider (owncube.com). Unfortunately Owncube doesn't provide ssh access for shared hosting so I am stuck and unsure about how to run occ commands. If I disable encryption encryption:decrypt-all
will I be able to run other commands?
What you are saying doesn't match their website at all. Are you really talking about OwnCube? No free tier, minimum paid size 25 GB, and crypto available.
Thank you for the recommendation! :)
However, I looked at this service and it was extremely confusing. I even emailed their sales/support with questions and if I recall correctly got bizarre responses back.
I believe it is a NextCloud instance, in which case the claims of end-to-end encryption are misleading, as it has been known to be totally nonfunctional for almost a year now.

Even before I read the above thread (tldr: there is no encryption to speak of going on over there), when I was shopping for a NextCloud vendor I found the information they put up on their site to be idiotic:
>Can I trust Allsync?
>
>Allsync is a registered company in Netherlands, you can find all our information on this page.
>
>Are my files safe with Allsync?
>
>Yes, All your files will be encrypted safely, we can not see any of them, account password too. We DO daily backups.
Nothing more technical than that to be found. They don't even state they are running NextCloud, I get the impression they are trying to disguise this fact.
If you are OK with NextCloud, the best provider I found was owncube.com (not ownCloud; confusing name). There is also a free plan.
Take a look at https://owncube.com
They currently have a special with paying 240€ one time for lifetime unlimited space (only need to pay 2€ per month for the smallest package).
It‘s not really selfhosted, but they offer also packages where you have access to manage your Nextcloud instance yourself (installing addons and so on)
It's open-sourced, so it's definitely a more privacy-focused option. I use OwnCube, which is also open-sourced, and it gives you 5GB of free NextCloud storage. There are paid options if you need more space. I'd definitely recommend NextCloud for secure cloud storage.
There was a quick reply from management (or at least someone calling themselves Friedrich Stagl.
First he replied: as Mrs Wedl replied, your ssl will be installed within your ordered SLA.
I never asked about MY ssl He continues: ...here is no ssl for your domain installed because its still a trial package... Here is the content of the email I received from them after signing up - no indication of ssl or provisioning time:

Don't see any mention about ssl time in this email
Again, this isn't my question to begin with.
Neither: Get an Owncloud service that lets you install the Contacts and Calendar extensions, then install DAVDroid on your phone and use it to add yyour contacts sync and calabder sync to your phone. You'll see a new option when you add contacts to save to your DAVdroid account on your owncloud. This should probably come up when you import your VCF exported contacts, so you can export all, delete from the phone/google, then re-import to your Owncloud.
You can set up owncloud on your own server if you're comfortable with terminal on Linux, or if you just want something that works, go get a super-cheap owncube hosted server (pick iceland as your data center when asked), then ask their surly support staff to enable SSL and install contacts/calendar for you.
Own Thine Own Data!
1) Devices Used: For myself and my wife, 2 LG Android phones (Cyanogenmod), Samsung Galaxy Tab A, Nook HD tablet (Cyanogenmod), 4 PCs (HTPC, work, mine, and wife's).
2) Until recently phones and tablets were synced using Google services, including Contacts, Calendar, app settings, etc. PCs were not synced.
Now using ownCloud exclusively for my tablet and phone (Contacts, Calendar, and photos/files), mixed between Google and ownCloud for her tablet and phone, and PCs are also now partially synced (eg, one massive Music database shared with all devices). Titanium Backup (root) is used for saving app settings/data.
3) Frustrations include setting up the ownCloud server and using self-signed SSL certificates. This can be alleviated by renting pre-configured ownCloud hosting with SSL (eg, Arvixe or OwnCube). I am using a pre-configured VM for ownCloud from suse studio on a spare PC at home which I'll eventually migrate to a proper, standalone install with proper SSL certificate.
Other frustrations included setting up the android clients, especially the self-signed SSL certificate. You need DAVDroid (Contacts/Calendar), CADroid (install self-signed SSL cert), and ownCloud app (photos/files) to sync everything.
